The power of 358/2 Days is how well they construct the main relationships. How characters who have the same goals (to take down Org XIII) and who love each other end up destroying each other.
All because the protagonists all have fundamentally different responses to the danger they’re in.
ROXAS -- FIGHT -- He wants to take on his enemies and his problems head-on. He has the keyblade. He wants to fight Org XIII, DiZ, Riku, and anyone who threatens him and his friends. So, he won’t run away with Xion and Axel has to keep him from knowing what the danger is.
XION -- FLIGHT -- She wants to run to find answers and protection. She’s not as experienced as Roxas and she’s never found safety or answers as a member of Org XIII. She goes behind their backs with Riku and Namine. So, Roxas must cover for her and Axel has to drag her back.
AXEL -- FREEZE -- He wants things to stay as they are. He knows how to work with and enjoy what he’s got. Things aren’t safe but things could get worse. He hides what’s wrong. So, neither Roxas nor Xion can bear to stay with him in Org XIII.
Then, you have Saix.
SAIX -- FAWN -- He wants to gain control over his situation by being what Org XIII wants him to be. He wants to execute orders perfectly and help only behind a layer of subterfuge. So, Axel, Roxas, and Xion don’t know they can trust him, they feel used, and they come to see him as the enemy he presents himself as.
By including Saix in the parallel, it emphasises the connections. By having his relationship with Axel be old and worn instead of new and shiny, it emphasises just how these friendships fall apart. This game emphasises the extent to which honest love can’t save them. All because they revert to their most basic instincts of protecting themselves rather than communicating and truly teaming up.
As much as I am glad Saix is now liked and welcomed into the Clocktower Trio in a lot of art and all now, I just wanna say I’ve loved him and believed he had good in him since before KH3 ;w; I’m glad to see my boy getting love

I'm honestly surprised that no one's been yelling at me for calling Roxas, Xion, & Axel/Lea the "Clocktower Trio" instead of the "Sea-Salt Ice Cream Trio" in that post I made with the cover art.
