Hey, everyone still talking about Ahmed. And still calling it Islamophobia. How many of you live in Texas? Or at least went to school in Texas? If so you may have heard about something called “Zero Tolerance Policy”. It is a byproduct of the “Safe Schools Act of 1995″ What this act did was made it so schools are required by law to over react to certain things. Fighting, drinking, drugs, weapons on campus, fake weapons on campus(prop swords etc.), and things that may seem to be a threat(e.g a student taking an aggressive tone with the teacher can be seen as a threat.) But I am going to explain Texas education a bit so you can understand something. Texas has ISDs. Or independent School Districts. What that means, is even though I lived from the Same distance between two schools I had to go to the one of the city I lived in. And each district has a very different culture. Mine was very much a Bro culture, the closest schools was very much closer to a Cholo culture. The only thing we all have in common is what we are told from Austin to have in common. Normally that is just rules. That means Austin has to make a set of rules that affect both the farm schools with a graduating class of 50 and schools in Laredo or Houston. So they make them vague but strict. It gives you your guidelines. Two kids fighting? Call the police (if you don’t have campus police) break it up. If minor fight they get ISS for a couple days. So someone gets this stick up their butt. And says “These rules are fine. But if they were laws!” And we get the Safe Schools Act of 1995. Now, the teachers have a shit load more rules to follow. It is no longer “Jimmy has a knife, as long as he doesn’t use it whatever.” Because now the Teacher gets in trouble so they have to be cautious. So if little Jimmy’s knife is actually a switch comb, and the teacher doesn’t know. Well teach sends Jimmy to the principal. Principal says “This is dangerous do you know what would happen if this is a real knife? 3 days ISS.” So how does this tie into Ahmed? Well he is in the Iriving ISD. Iriving is one of the “strictest” districts in Texas. Letter of the Law not spirit. Of the 1000 or so school districts in Texas they expel more kids then 5 other schools and send kids to DAEP then a dozen other schools. Irving is only the 27 biggest school district. Here is the thing that burns my biscuits though. Us Texans know this shit is happening and we are trying to fix it. Two years ago we made it so in school police officers could not ticket minor offenses. This year we made truancy no longer a crime. We are trying to fix this shitty behavior. But it is not race based. Kind of. Yes there are old white people in power who are afraid of losing it (Irving being one of them. Fun fact: In Irving the majority of people are Hispanic at 40%). So if you want to champion Ahmed. Don’t boil it down to religion. By doing that you are telling law makers, it doesn’t matter if you fuck over your black population. We need to fix this. For everyone.

If they really thought what Ahmed Mohammed has was a bomb they would have shut down the school. That’s proper protocol.
