Using Brief Motivational Interviewing for PSTSD
There are many counseling techniques that have emerged over the years to cope with problems faced by individuals in everyday life. With more challenges associated with modern lifestyles, many people are finding it harder to cope with circumstances they find themselves in. Â It is no wonder then that more people are finding themselves immersed in destructive behaviors such as substance and alcohol abuse. Such behavior could be caused by different situations including job loss, relationship issues or medial situations such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Understanding Brief Motivational Interviewing
One of the key methods of dealing with problem drinking and other emotional issues that plague individuals today is Brief Motivational Interviewing. The philosophy, developed by William Miller in 1983, entails an approach of empathy and respect in the counseling process in order to promote behavior change. In the simplest understanding, it is a client-centered counseling approach where change is elicited by close association between the individual and counselor. Â
The role of the counselor is directive and this also involves eliciting self-motivational statements. The idea is to enhance the clientâs motivation for change. The main principles of motivational interviewing include empathy and reflective listening, respect and acceptance, positive focus, listening, support, collaborative relationship and avoiding confrontation.
The main techniques used in this approach include open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing and eliciting motivational statements. The fact that these motivational statements are the core of the counseling process means your counselor will focus on the same through problem recognition, identifying concerns, expressing optimism and evaluating intention of the individual to change.
This approach has been used in Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in one of the many variants of clinical applications. Whatever situation you are going through, it is advisable to talk to a counselor who will then initiate a non-judgmental and collaborative effort at bringing about change.
