Five Details + Five (Ridiculous) Questions: Heidi Schrab
Welcome to a new series on the new blog: Five Details + Five Questions. The name is fairly self explanatory so let's just dive right in, shall we?
First up is a 5x5 from the home of Heidi Schrab of Habit8 in Austin TX. I absolutely adore her abode. Here are my five favorite things, along with the totally ridiculous questions that I made Heidi answer.
1: Bad-ass tile. Heath Ceramics (top left), a custom blend of penny rounds from Clayhaus (top right) and a custom pattern of Heidi's own design, which was produced by Fireclay Tile (bottom).
KLP: If you, Fireclay, Heath and Clayhaus were in a street fight against Ron Burgundy and the Channel Four News Team, who would win, and why?
HS: I really had to think about this one. I immediately knew that my gang would win in this street fight, but I was not sure how to answer the "why" part of the question. I mean, Ron Burgundy is fabulous, but he's a buffoon and I'd be willing to bet that he's more of a lover than a fighter... plus he wears a lot of polyester so he'd probably be sweaty and could slip and fall on the bad-ass tile... and I saw the Channel Four News Team sing "Afternoon Delight."
2: Art. If there's ever an art heist at Heidi's house, I hope my obvious envy of her collection doesn't make me an automatic suspect. Above: Milhee by Felice House with two small pieces from the East Austin Studio Tour.
KLP: What's the furthest you've gone (ie: wild adventure) to obtain a piece of art?
HS: Bangkok Thailand. I didn't GO there to buy art, but somehow it finds me wherever I go. So that also answers the question, what's the farthest you've visited.
3: Rugs. She's got some great ones. This multi-colored number, which Heidi pilfered from her dad (it was originally her grandmother's) is my fave.
KLP: The colors in this rug are gorgeous together. If you had to pick one of these colors for your shiny new bicycle, which would it be?
HS: My shiny new bicycle would be grey. Very low profile. I really don't want to draw attention to myself while bike riding, or for that matter, doing anything that may cause my body parts to jiggle.
4: Clever lighting. Architect Michael A. Barber insisted that Heidi find a good statement piece to hag over her stairs. When she found this object d' arte at Restoration Hardware, she knew it was right... so she had it turned into a pendant and electrified.
KLP: If you had to live electricity-free for a year, how would you light your home so that it was both effective and lovely?
HS: For the sake of just being thrown into the situation, I'll assume that my husband finally convinced me to move to the mountains...okay, so lighting would be those tiny solar string lights. I would drape them across the ceiling and they would be inside and outside. (I'm also assuming we are living in a pop-up camper for the year.)
5: Chic Whimsy. Heidi adorned her daughter's bed with this felted pom cord from West Elm (technically holiday garland). Super clever and cute.
KLP: If you had to wear this pom cord to a red carpet event, how would you style it?
HS: The poms would be a coat... a cross between a hippie fringe coat and a flapper dress...really obnoxious! I love it already. I would probably dye it bright yellow with black at the cuffs!
