The Mingun Pagoda (stupa), Myanmar, is the unfinished remains of a massive Buddhist monument began under King Bodawpaya in 1790. It was intended to rise to a height of 500ft and would have been taller than the Great Pyramid at Giza if completed.
However. The project was very unpopular both locally and nationally. It partly employed slave labor (prisoners of war), and also drained the labor and resources of the region. It is believed that a prophecy was concocted - that the king would die when it was finished - to trick the highly superstitious king into slowing the work greatly. Only a third complete, it was abandoned at his death.
An earthquake in 1839 caused most of its current cracked and broken state.
It holds the record of being the largest mass of bricks in the world.
