(( why do we insist on hurting each other so much? ))
Wed Me: I’ll write a drabble about our character under the subject of wedlockÂ
Evelyn twisted the engagement ring around her finger nervously, a habit that she would unknowingly pick up for the rest of her married life. A sinking feeling filled her stomach as she looked at herself in the mirror one last time. Her hair was perfectly pinned back and for once, her green eyes were bright and sparkling. It seemed as if recent events had sparked new life in her. She seemed younger...happier...her dressed tee'd off midway down her calves and it was extremely simple. Her only accessories were the bouquet of white lilies and a smile that spoke to what she was; a triumphant tragedy. "You look beautiful..." she heard a male voice say behind her. Her smile grew and she turned to see Eugen behind her. "Thank you...though I'm nervous." Despite everything that had happened after they had all left the island, she still felt that maybe Claude would change his mind. That maybe he wouldn't be there when she walked down the aisle. "C'mon. Everything will be fine. Smile...you only get married once...hopefully." he teased and she laughed. The sound was unfamiliar with her, but she hoped that it would integrate itself into her life to the point that she could almost forget the times where she didn't know whether she would laugh again. Gently, she took Eugen's arm and breathed in deeply. Smile Evelyn...your new life starts now. Her happiness and excitement broke through the nervousness and she proceeded to walk to the doors to the sanctuary.
There weren't that many people there. On her side, there was only her siblings for example. She had insisted on a small affair, since it was an intimate moment in her life. It was the same thing when it came to a church wedding. She was certain that Claude really didn't care where they were married. It could be the courthouse for goodness sakes, but just so long as the day ended in their union. A bounce entered her step as she pictured Claude's smile...never had she dreamed that she could be so happy with someone. When the march began, Eugen tugged on her arm to pull her back to the present. She didn't have to imagine his smile now, for when the doors opened, she could see it. And it made her heart stop...
The ceremony itself passed in a blur, but there was one moment when her fears resurfaced. She had forgot to put on her bracelets...the ones that covered her scars. When she passed her bouquet to Sonja, who was her maid of honor, the flowers no longer covered them and she bit her lip. Claude's hands took hers and in a quick, fluid movement, he kissed the silver scars on her right wrist. "I love you..." he mouthed and she knew that everything would be okay. For better or for worse, he would love her for the rest of their days...and so long as she lived, her heart would be his.
Mourn Me: I’ll write a drabble about my character mourning your character’s death.
Evelyn stood in front of the small grave and suppressed her sob. Since the day he had asked her to marry him, Evelyn hadn't stopped smiling. That is...until the day she got the call from the hospital. Everything took on a surreal feel after the first few words, and from then on she stopped paying attention. Only the worst words broke through her reverie...for they were the most truthful and the most blunt. Terrible accident...car crash...dead on arrival...very sorry...she didn't even have the chance to say goodbye! He was gone in a flash, and the light she had thought would be in her life was extinguished. "I miss you every day you know..." she spoke quietly. Her voice echoed eerily off the gravestones around her and she pulled her sweater closer around herself. The fog rolled in and it looked like a horror movie. Normally, she would have been nervous about the scenery around her, but she didn't care. "You've been gone for seven months now darling...I'm not sure what to do with the cottage. Everything there reminds me of you and I don't think I can bear it." Her back began to hurt and she placed her hand on the small of it. "Ai!" she murmured before Eugen came out to help her. He had been keeping his distance so she could have some privacy with her husband, but at the first sign of distress, he would help her. "Are you alright?" he asked in a caring voice. "Yes...it's just, she's giving me more of a problem now a days." Her brother smiled and they left the grave behind. To most it would look like a rather idyllic scene had it not been in a grave yard...a brother walking his pregnant sister to the car.
Because the worst day of her life had been coupled with the best day as well...when she had gotten the call from the hospital, she had been cooking a meal to tell Claude...
She was pregnant, but he never knew that he would have a daughter.
