Class content meme: The “Art student owl” meme is a meme referencing struggles that those studying art commiserate over. In this case, I am using it to criticize the Kantian perspective for being based purely on formal analysis, and ignoring socially contextual reasons for why a piece may not be aesthetically pleasing. While there is a time and a place for the aesthetic analysis of art, within the class context of political disrupt, it is important to go beyond Kant’s view.

Guy Debord labels technology and media as a distraction, as the ‘spectacle’. Nowadays screens and technology worm their way into everyday items, including refrigerators. In Debord’s eye, mundane things can be considered art and are definitely part of the spectacle. Usually these everyday items just go kind of unnoticed, and I think it’s interesting to consider them as art.
