i hate book 24 of the odyssey and i wrote about it in school and i need ti share this frustration
Book 24 is not needed - the trip to the underworld to see what the suitors' perspective of the events was not necessary, especially because they made themselves the victims and blamed everyone else. Also the whole trick with Laertes is so unneeded, there is absolutely no reason for him to lie to Laertes - why does he even bother, it is pointless and just makes me dislike Odysseus more, there was no need, especially considering he just tells the truth not long after. I can appreciate and understand that they have to deal with the outcome for the suitors' families, but Odysseus and Penelope had a whole plan for what to do when the suitors' family takes revenge and it did not take action at all. Also Penelope is still locked in her bedroom if you aren’t even going to do the plan? The inclusion of the suitors' families is admittedly necessary because otherwise that's a massive plothole, but then the outcome of this is so unsatisfying. If Homer has made all of book 24 how they would overcome this then it would be okay but the fact that the gods just solve everything is so frustrating, like they could have done that the entire time? The memory wiping thing is a cop out and is an even worse plothole than if Homer had just neglected to mention the suitors' families again. This is another reason I feel like the underworld bit was a hindrance, if Homer hadnt returned to the suitors and reminded us of them it would be less needed to resolve the vengeance thing with their families.
