Jekyll and Hyde - thoughts
After completing the book, I have chosen several themes to take forward into an adaptation.Â
Firstly, I have changed my mind about trying to fit my adaptation into the same Urban Gothic genre. Instead, I would like to focus on a more thematic parallel. I am very interested in the idea of duality of a person, and also want to look into the subtext of addiction some more.
Since coming to university, I have witnessed first hand the party culture present in young people, especially among students. The idea I had was to explore this theme of studying during the day and drinking and partying at night, and how when I was out every weekend, I almost became two different versions of myself.
My aim is to take the experiences I have had and that others I know have had, and perhaps exaggerate them to explore a theme of becoming more and more dependent on the party lifestyle, and how someone can go from just enjoying a weekend, to drinking every day over the weekend almost compulsively.
Adaptation of Classic Text
For this task, we have been assigned a classic text to write an adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.Â
This is an Urban Gothic novella, and I want to do an adaptation based on this genre. The Gothic genre is mainly defined by its overall dark and dramatic tone, and often centres around a supernatural element.The subgenre of Urban Gothic is simply a similar style of writing set in the city or a more populated area.
I also like the idea of the theme of duality that embodies the majority of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.Â
