Prompt:
A red and striped beach towel covered a red, one-piece swimsuit with a logo of a streak of white lighting made of a different fabric on the upper-right chest. A coconut drink with a pale blue umbrella was being slurped out of a straw, and Amy Rose was lounging on a low beach chair, enjoying the morning paper.
Music played beside her on a super old-fashioned stereo she liked to call, âRetroâ in design. She mindlessly stared at the article about her blue heroâs triumphant victory yet again earlier in the week, and clicked a button to change the station channel on the stereo.
âAnd now, for all you lonely hearts out there~â The announcer stated, showing she was listening to the radio.
âOh-hoo~ My love~â Amy sighed deeply, listening to the music. âWhether through storming waves, or over the moon, and past all the constant stars~â
She frowned, looking up from her thick black glasses with red rims to the ocean before her, and then looking around while putting a fist up to her chin to lean on her low-riding spread chair meant to fit two.
â⌠Heâs not coming⌠is he?â
âWhenever you need me, call out my special name. And no matter what, Iâll be the rocketâs red flame. Iâll be the steamboatâs song~ Iâll be the rowing tidal wave-â
She turned off the music, getting annoyed with a long stretch up to finally start getting ready to go home.
She smacked her lips together, looking back at the coconut drink and closing one eye to peer the other into it. âHmm. Empty. Like my day has beenâŚâ She placed it down and whined a little with a groan up towards the heavens, getting up as though she was âtooâ relaxed, and it bothered her.
Wiggling her bum up and off the chair was probably her way of coping with the miserable evening of a beautiful day on the beach⌠wasted.
âI really thought heâd do it.â She pushed against her back by drawing her hands to its bending arch, stretching again with a âHooâŚâ at the end of it all.
She rolled up some of the newspaper and smacked off the resting sand sticking to her legs, then wiggled her tail to spray off the last of the scratchy sand and nodded with a pleased look of achievement in her expression.
âYep, thatâd oughta do it. Next time, if I text Sonic a specific day and time, in hopes of not telling him what weâre doing to be a great âhookâ for a surprise date, maybe just tell him to RSVP so I donât sit here disappointed?â She looked at her newest phone designed by Tails himself, and still⌠no calls, no messages⌠But a post of Cream and her Mother sending good wishes to Amy⌠as though they knew he wouldnât come either.
Her heart sank a little at the adorable picture, knowing those two were there during her hardest of times⌠When she thought Sonic wasnât coming back to their worldâŚ
She put away the phone into the beach bag, a simple weaved one she bought cheap.
âWhy do I even botherâŚâ She reached to get her stereo⌠bending down and reaching for it. âHe probably didnât even receive the text, anyway⌠I wonder if heâs off planet again?â
Before her hand could reach the handle, a gust of familiar, fast-flying wind sped by her and swished her quills to the right, staggering her bent stance slightly as a button was clicked down to spark to life the radio again.
âThis goes out to our heartbreakers!â The announcer stated, but the wind came again and again, changing the channels, âNews states the sportâs life is at an all-time-â *Click* âAnother beloved actor has unfortunately passed this-â *Click* âTo the old couples out there, this oneâs for you, honey.â
By this time, Amyâs hair had been whipped left and right, and even her three iconic quills were dangling limply over her face, making her blow up a puff of air to move at least one of them out of the way to reveal her droopy eye.
âWhen youâre alone, does it feel like the end? If this is goodbye, no, Iâll call your bluff, babe.â
Hearing the classic song, Amy suddenly thought back to when she first heard it.
Many, many years agoâŚ
âI wonât do it!â Sonic, in funny floaties, flippers, and over-exaggerated eye-goggles folded his arms and pouted deeply into them, refusing to even set foot in the water as a young Amy Rose splashed him and tapped the water.
âMr. Sonic. If you donât get in the water and conquer your fears, how will we ever swim together?â She cheerfully stated, with the firm hand of a devoted teacher.
âWe donât.â He simply, firmly, stated back with the spirit of youthful rebellion, and tried to take off a flipper that was wedged in tightly on his footâŚ
As he struggled, Amy sighed.
The song on the radio back then was the same radio she was using today⌠But the song was much newer thenâŚ
âDonât act so tough, youâre my hellos, and every good morning from sundown to dusk. So trust~ Me~â
âCome on, Mr. Sonic! Take my haaaandâŚâ She waddled through the pond of the zone they were currently in, taking his hand and gently guiding him into the water, his flippity-flopping clops-clops of his splashing flippers wading through the water unwillingly following after her.
She giggled, âAw, youâre so cute!â
âCute!?â Sonic angrily twitched an eye, then sneezed. âIâm not cute! Iâm cool!â
âYouâd be even cooler if you swam with me~â Amy teased, winking one eye closed and smiling charmingly to him.
He blew bubbles with mumbles heâd never say above the surface of the waterâŚ
Never would he admit her sweet nature lured him into giving it a try, kicking his feet as she giggled and squeeâd with encouragements and praises for his efforts.
To please her⌠he continued through the dayâŚ
âIâll be coming~ Home~ Soon~ Weâre two peas in a pie, a wink in an eye, youâve got my other half so, I really canât let go.â
âSee? This is fun!â She tilted her head into her raised shoulder on her left side, but he refused to look up and engage her further, kicking harder to try and use his speed to accelerate through it. âN-No no, Mr. Sonic. You gotta- Ah!â He moved so fast that she had to let go of his hands as he passed by her, his attempt to flee her only made him stuck in the middle of the pond, hopelessly flopping around with spraying up, animated tears in his eyes. âM-... Mr. Sonic!â She smacked two hands to her cheeks and hurriedly began to go to him, seeing he was panicking as the sound effect for drowning started to ring in Sonicâs ears.
âA-Am-Am-!â He was trying to keep his mouth above the water, but his head went too forward as he tried to âhard breakâ with his legs, fear striking him stiff as he was now kicking his feet above in the air, his face below water⌠stuck.
âSoonniiccc!!!â It was the first time she ever called his name without an honorific, and quickly swam with all her might to reach him, and turn him front side up again.
He didnât even cough, but right when his head came back up, he cried out, âAmmmeesss!!!!â
âH-Huh?â She moved her hands off his floaties, too taken-aback by hearing that.
âItâs you and me, an âusâ and a âoursâ. Why do you think time stands still? Why do you think I still call you mine?â
âYou⌠You called me âAmesâ.â She stayed afloat in the water, as Sonic caught his breath and coughed, wiping his mouth, he looked pretty exhausted for the day.
She put her fist to her heart, touched, but seeing this wasnât really helping them âbondâ at all⌠He was truly not having fun, so she made the best decision out of love for his bravery to at least attempt something he didnât want to do with her cheering him onâŚ
At least⌠he was kind enough to indulge, even for a moment⌠to conquer his fears so they could swim together. âOhh⌠We donât have to-â
âY-Youâre name is Amy⌠Sorry about that. Donât get mad I said it wrong, okay?â His backtrack made her pause.
âDid⌠Under the water, it sounded like⌠you said my name normally, didnât you?â He looked back to her, just letting the floaties do the work as he drifted somewhat from her, and she slowly reached out to grab his arm and pull him back to where she was.
âT⌠Thatâs right. I was too familiar with you. Iâm sorry.â She looked truly like she was apologizing for making him go in the water, but Sonic just flashedâwithout hesitationâa reassuring and charming, closed-eye smile to her.
âHeh-heh, thatâs alright! Call me Sonic!â He then winked to her, âAll my friends do.â
She felt her heart elevate as though rising to walk on water..!
âAnd Iâll call you Amy from now on. Ames is kinda⌠Just not your pretty name, right?â He tilted his head, âSorry about that. Nicknames are gross!â He stuck out his tongue,... was he⌠trying to cover up how embarrassed he was..?
She covered her mouth, âIs he⌠really so shy!? Under all that cool persona and confident demeanor!?â She gushed over him, âMy adorable hero!!!â And leaned her hand into her cheek, blushing.
âOhhh⌠Why⌠Do you think Iâm wasting âourâ time? With you. Oh, you. You are mine. All mine. And half of whatâs left of a love that canât be beaten. Half of whatâs leftover and eaten. Half of my sleep, and half of my dreams. And all of the rights, and none of the wrong. Though I, canât, prove⌠What makes you so unique, Iâll speak it out once more.â
Another memory triggered, seeing a hand outstretch into a now older Amyâs vision as a string of shells meant to be a lucky charm protection against water accidents was in front of her⌠with an hand hoping sheâd take itâŚ
âCan you⌠help me put it on, Amy?â
She laughed, getting up.
She rose to her tippity-toesâŚ
âSoooniiikkuuuâŚ!!!!â The sound of the adorable nickname echoed through the spans of timeâŚ.
As Amy rememberedâŚ
Falling into the water, Sonic swimming to reach herâŚ
What she didnât know⌠wasâŚ
What he rememberedâŚ
On that dayâŚ
Many, many years ago⌠but not quite so long ago as before.
âWhen youâre alone, does it feel like the end? If this is goodbye, no, Iâll call your bluff, babe.â
Sonic, stopping at the edge of the water, only looked with that same stiffening fear into the water⌠before remembering that day in the pond, with Amy teaching him that moving his feet so fast only moves water under him, not helping him to go up but sink down fasterâŚ
It would take more energy to use his speed in water, and benefit him nothing but losing all energy to keep swimming⌠causing him to drown.
Remembering that helpful tidbit, he took a deep breath, a surge of courage coming over himâŚ
As he dived willingly into the waterâŚ
Much⌠much more vast than a pondâŚ
âDonât act so tough, youâre my hellos, and every good morning from sundown to dusk. So trust~ Me~â
Swimming down to her, he felt the pressure of the ocean against his body, the water bringing him down as he wanted it to, trying to reach her sinking form.
He saw her eyes open only for a moment, her present⌠she wasnât letting it goâŚ
His eyes turned from concern to suddenly determined love.
He stopped reaching for her, and swished his arms in wild-rotations, a very amateur remembrance of her lessons on how to move oneâs arms while trying to propel themselves forward.
She had taught that the arms were more important than the legs sometimes, when wanting to move forward in water.
Her body disappeared into the deepest blue of the abyss⌠and with bubbles firing out of his nose from losing sight of her, he rotated his arms faster and kicked his feet even harder⌠he didnât care if he made it out⌠she would.
âIâll be coming~ Hooooome~ Soon~âÂ
Walking through the murky water⌠now becoming clearer⌠one foot in front of the other, Sonic was determined to try and get out.
The beach wasnât too far awayâŚ
He looked down at Amy⌠And breathed that last of his air into herâŚ
Now on pure instinct of survival, with his muzzle turning just as blue as his body, he fought with all his might in large, quick leaps through the water to finally make it out, walking weakly to the shore and sucking in his first breath of air once breaching the surface.
He set her down on the warm sand, falling to his hands and kneesâshaking.
He kept his eyes tightly shut, Eggman almost won by using his greatest fear against himâŚ
It wasn't the water⌠it was losing Amy.
He hacked a few times and hit his chest, not knowing anything about secondhand drowning, and wiped his mouth to look at Amy.
He turned her over and hit her back, but nothing.
His calmed expression suddenly turned to a spark of understanding she wasnât out of the figurative âwatery woodsâ just yet.
He tilted her head up, and took a large breath another⌠conquering another fearâŚ
And blew air back into her⌠past her lips⌠through her mouth⌠and into her lungsâŚ
When he pulled away⌠nothing.
âSo much for trueâs love first kissâŚâ He immediately began chest-compressions, but after the third one, she started coughing and he backed away, his face now white from having been stupid enough to believe that just getting her out of the water was enough to save her.
She had almost been dead if he hadnâtâŚ
He shook his head out of it as Cream came over, and tried to look relaxed again, letting a hand go behind his back and keep him upwards, his legs bending to the sides of himself.
âH-Hey, CreamâŚâ He tried to feigned a smile to let her know it was all alright.
He looked to Amy, worry still slowly leaving him as her torso rose up and down⌠breathing⌠at last⌠again.
âMiss Amy? Miss Amy?â Cream shook her, and Sonic realizedâwith his muzzle now turning redâthat he couldnât face her after thatâŚ
He looked around for an exit plan⌠before seeing the âalmost mementoâ of her gift still locked in her unstiffening fingersâŚ
He took it, and looked to Cream, âHelp me tie this on?â He asked sweetly, âAnd make sure to stay with Amy⌠I donât want her waking up alone. You can do this for me, wonât you?â He winked charmingly, the same tactic he used on a littler Amy so long agoâŚ
Much farther back than even this memoryâŚ
Cream had nodded, âLeave it to me and Cheese, Mr. Sonic!â A familiar honorific to his name that sounded just as heavenly as when Amy had-
He smiled to her, but thinking of âheavenâ wasnât what he wanted to dwell upon right now.
âThank you.â He gave a sweet smile to her,... and took off after she tied it on to herself.
Sneezing as he did when he first heard Amy call him cute, he couldnât help but relive that moment⌠gazing out on a beautiful landscape that had almost taken the most important thing in his life away from himâŚ
A special somebody⌠who he had yet to swim with⌠even after all these years.
âSonic,â He smirked to himself, trying to cheer himself up and rid himself of the fear he momentarily experienced⌠just moments ago. âYou gotta stay out of the water.â He took a gloved finger under his nose, trying to warm it, but really⌠his eyes were goofy in his doting of how much he cared about her.
Though, heâd never admit it openly.
Determined to never let her get that close to death again, he narrowed his eyes, âHmm.â And rose up, standing confidently before the sea as her gift and lucky charm dangled around his wrist, with Creamâs attached string to the broken one⌠to help it stay on again.
â... You wonât take Ames away from meâŚâ He declared to the sea, then boldly put his hands on his hips, âAnd I will swim in ya with her, yet! Just like she wanted! You wait and seeâŚâ
Back in the modern era, Amy was still holding Sonicâs hands, helping him to kick more precisely in his floating innertube as support around his waist than just to hurry through the whole thing.
The radio was still playing⌠lights showing it was on even far after duskâŚâThanks to the request of one of our listeners, this one goes out to a very special lady. He called in the station saying, âThis oneâs for you, Amy! I didnât forgetâcha!â Aww, what a sweetie! Give him a break, okay?â

Hey so I was wondering if you actually liked amy? I mean why like sally acorn the squirrel thing when you can actually like a natural female hedgehog? Btw ima girl and I think itz prtty obvious you like her! <3
You're right. I like Amy. Okay? I said it. But I only like her as a friend. I'll say it again. FRIIIIIEEEEEND. I, in no way possible, plan on likin' her in any way more than a friend or any less than a sister. I like her because she's my friend. The same goes for Sally. They're both my friends. I don't prefer one over the other. I don't wanna know or shouldn't know what's gonna happen to any of us in the future. And besides, why the heck should ya even care if I * shudder * date Sal or Ames? Why does it matter to ya, Anon-girlie? Don't see why it should matter ta' me.Seriously, I'm not the kind of guy that does "boating" stuff or whatever the heck you tumblr guys call it. ..."Boxing"? Whatever. J-just...keep 'em somewhere else. I'm not ready for that kinda stuff, okay? This hedgehog is up, over and gone.
