Negan & Class
That moment when you get to go on a “rant” ‘bout Negan in class, and your classmates realize just much of a sucker you are for the barbed-wire baseball bat wielding, leather jacket wearing, sarcastic little shit.
I actually got to talk ‘bout Negan in my Activism course today, and was able to get across the point I was trying to make. Even if I did get slightly distracted by the thought of the man. I think I might’ve even gotten a few people to realize that even though Negan is an asshole, he’s not a monster, and there were reasons for him doing what he did.
The fall semester is about to start for me, and normally I have trouble raising my hand in my very discussion-heavy classes. But I don’t want my professors to think I’m uninterested in the material. I have anxiety (not formally diagnosed tho), so each time I even think about raising my hand, my heart beats too fast and I feel physically tired after. I guess I’m scared of saying the wrong thing or sounding silly. Do you have any tips for controlling those negative thoughts? ❤️ thanks!
You might find this online workbook on social anxiety (and many of these other self help resources) useful in learning to control your negative thoughts. It might also be a good idea to make an appointment with a school counsellor if your anxiety is bothering you - seeking some professional support could be really beneficial, even if you think this is only a small issue!
Either way, that’s something you can work on outside of class, but in the moment, it might be a good idea to challenge yourself to raise your hand anyway, even though it makes you anxious, even though your heart beats too fast, even though it’s scary. Try setting yourself a goal of saying something in class once a day, or once a week, or even once per class, depending on what you think you could realistically manage. You could start with only raising your hand to answer very simple obvious questions with short answers, and gradually build up to more thoughtful answers, or asking questions of your own. The work you do outside of class on controlling your anxiety (through relaxation techniques and controlling your negative thoughts) can help you with that build up to more difficult scenarios. I think that the more you do it, the easier it will become. And even if it doesn’t get easier, at least you’re still engaging in class, and benefiting your education, and you can be proud of yourself for doing it anyway.
But remember, if this is something you really struggle with, there are other ways to show your professors that you’re interested! You could go and talk to them during their office hours, or after class, or email them with questions, to show that you’re engaging with the material in your own way. Even if you decide that raising your hand in class is something you absolutely cannot do right now, you can still make an effort to be an active participant in your education.
