So anyways we have someone who apparently "values logic" but behaves in very stupid ways, how does this work? Chapter 37 (when they try to leave Seungjae) and 29 (when they lose the guns) gives us an idea.

He hits Yura for her mistake, while at the same time being unwilling to admit he also lost a rifle.

When Yeojeong mentions the murders Yunsang interrupts her and tells her to stop talking about that, saying: "You need to take desperate measures in desperate times" [<-attempt to justify]

When talking about leaving, Yunsang paints himself (and the others) in a positive light instead of acknowledging he fucked up.

He says:

"We're different from Seungjae" "Besides, it was Seungjae that kept telling us to pick on Se-yeon. He was behind it all." "It's not like we wanted to bully her. We're victims too, just like her!"

To be fair, it was Seungjae's idea to steal from Se-yeon… but that's where it ends. Yunsang pointed a gun at her and laughed about it with his friends.

He enthusiastically stole food from Se-yeon, knowing this would hurt her, even agreed with the idea to take all of the food she had and leave her with nothing, despite knowing there was chance she could starve and die.

We all know he was the one who threw the cigarette at Se-yeon that one time, and who knows what else he’s done? And with Hyeonseong, we can see this:

"He fucking deserved to die anyways." "Don't tell me you didn't see Hyeonseong fire at us first! He had already lost control!"

And whose fault would it be, if he was a little unstable? right? He should have something to say to that- since it's a pretty reasonable point- but his arguments have always been emotional in nature, so he ends the conversation, with provocation, indifference, intimidation…

"Yeah i bullied him but… … So what?"

And after that they start fighting... so the attempt to shut down the conversation worked really well.

... So how does it work? A guy who brings up reason and common sense while he talks, yet so stupid... and maybe even self-conscious about that.

Yunsang doesn't like topics that make him feel uncomfortable. Yet he values "logic" because doesn't want to be seen as stupid, it has to do with his fears about being wrong and its consequences.

So instead of addressing an uncomfortable but important situation, maybe even one in which he could be wrong, he does everything to create a reality in which he doesn't have to do those things but still mantain the illusion that he is. That's what happens with the topic of Seungjae killing people: "It was justified, it was necessary... can you stop bringing that up?"

Whatever Yunsang believes to be correct, is what is “objectively speaking” correct because the other only option is being wrong, and that's embarrassing, and scary. He twists everything until whatever he's saying is what makes the most sense, even if he has to lie, omit, or bullshit his way through in order to "win".

Instead of having a conversation he shuts it down by using the same arguments he uses on himself to avoid thinking about it ("desperate measures in desperate times").

If denial and bullshit doesn't work, then he'll turn the argument into a fight- mock the other about something unrelated, giving him the upper hand in the situation while also effectively ending the conversation (+ the other is forced to argue on his terms).

He can't take responsibility for his actions either because... that's uncomfortable. So he's never wrong, about anything... ever. Unless it's a small thing then he's like: "everyone makes mistakes okay so get off my case already" but those cases rarely require bravery/maturity to admit.

Basically: Yunsang's unwillingness to acknowledge Seungjae's terrible behavior is something he's also unwilling to do to himself. He's a selfish person who's okay with violence/bad situations until they start to affect him.

His briefly "reasonable" moments (such as saying they all should work as a team) only come because it's bad for him as well (he suggests working as a team because he didn't want to gather water by himself).

He's okay with stealing from Se-yeon but hates the idea of sharing food with Mr Park because "he didn't do anything to earn it".... except he himself also didn't do much either, he's okay with Yura eating, until he's not... because she screwed up. and her behavior affected him

He doesn't want to talk about Seungjae killing 2 people because that's his friend who’s nice to HIM. Until Seungjae hits him and that's when he then changes his mind, but not at any point before that.
