2/27: Well, the lair can't all be nesting grounds and meeting spots! What is the situation with denmates in your clan? Is it one, giant den all the dragons sleep in, or do dragons share different, smaller dens? Are there denmates who are worst enemies or best of friends? And if Faes are part of your clan, where do they usually sleep?
The Passus Canorous has several sections, the Cloudsong Kite, the rather large expansion of land in the Steppes, and a large number of tunnels that have been dug out by the tundras of the clan.
The Kite is where the Council and Royalty live, holding 'court' and overseeing the clan. It's periodically moved around the lands of troupe holds so that all members of the troupe get a chance to speak with the council if they need something. The pattern of movement during this change is never set so troupe members have to keep an eye out about where the dragons go.
The Steppes are an expansive section bordering the Sea of a Thousand Currents. There are various patches that are inhabited by the larger members of the troupe (Imperials in particular have a hard time fitting into the tunnels so they tend to stay topside). A large number of bonfires are kept going in spots so that visitors can find a place to stay during the night if necessary.
The tunnels are inhabited by most of the clan, in addition to the sleeping quarters (which are all shared between mated couples and their hatchlings) the tunnels house a tea house, a cafe, a healer's ward, hatchling quarters, the mausoleum and crypt, several meeting spaces, and the treasury. There's also a large number of tunnels and places unused yet for the expansion of the troupe.
Okay, so a while back I did a rough sketch of what Helfonaur’s territory might look at. Here it is if you’re curious.
So after seeing Terra’s post and another rad one by someone who’s name I can’t remember, I felt like revisiting the idea. Here’s an aerial view of the area. It looks sparse because the guts of the territory is on the cliff face. The stuff on top is more things that can’t stay in a cave, like anything that makes a lot of smoke or bears. The buildings are based on the beehive houses in Syria. The forge as an outside area as well. Endien has been adding more trees to the territory. I tried adding Durhil for a sense of scale, but I feel that I mad her too big. The arrows are to show where there’s incline; it’s more of a note for when I’m doing the cliff face.
I’m gonna try to play around with the cliff face details tomorrow. Maybe I’ll also get around to drawing the buildings too.
I'm not great with landscapes, but here's an attempt!
This is where clan Helfonaur resides in the Ashfall Wastes. The clan lives in tunnels and caves they created on the cliffs not far from the Blacksand Annex. Larger dragons live near the top while smaller dragons live closer to the water. Earth and Fire dragons tend to live closer to the lava due to their tolerance and even make sure the others are safe from it by making tunnels for it flow through so that they don't spill into the residential tunnels. Ice and Wind dragons help by making the tunnels cool and help air flow through.
The nests stay close to the lower tunnels to keep them safe from any thefts from above. Forges and other workshops stay on the top of the cliff, and a few trees from Nature dragons grip the edge. The walls near the tunnels are smoothed down save for the large carving of the Flamecaller a few of the Fire dragons felt like the lair needed.
Inspired by the Maijishan Grottoes in the Northwest part of China. Here's a link to an article about them.
Also it appears that I'm not far from nabesima!
