I've definitely seen it and talked about it before but I still really love the idea that if you want to add an otherwise canon compliant queer story into canon, one of the most fun and easy ways (other than I wanna say making CJ/Kate happen in season 7) would be to keep just about everything the same for Amy's character. Except let her intro to the show be as a love interest for CJ instead of Josh.
Obviously timeline wise that'd mean Simon would remain either just her agent without the crush, OR it becomes a fun little dramatic venue with some jealousy and mixed feelings that ends in complete tragedy. But either way.
They can easily have that same push and pull dynamic, with a slightly different angle than Josh and Amy had. Because CJ agrees with Amy's points and methods so much more than Josh does; she doesn't look down on Amy the same way Josh sometimes does. But she's also a woman who's almost always the only woman in a room full of men who kinda look down on her, she's the White House Press Secretary, and she has other priorities and necessary tactics than Amy does.
So you still have that tension between Amy's work and CJ's. But with another level of understanding where the other is coming from. CJ sure as hell doesn't get Amy fired; Amy is still willing to throw a phone in a stew. They still have drinks at the end of the night and CJ can cry it all out (and potentially resort to her 'habit' of sleeping with a trusted person in the face of grief or tragedy) after Simon's killed.
You can easily give them the same backstory of Amy having dated or hooked up with CJ's college roommate and CJ's complicated feelings about that at the time. (Bonus points if that roommate is Andy, of course, but it can be any random person. And it's partially that jealousy and a slight crush CJ might have on Amy, and maybe her roommate, and it's partially CJ's discomfort with not having come to terms with her own sexuality while her roommate and Amy are clearly more comfortable with it.)
And it still doesn't last! But it's there and it's a serious part of their characters, and aside from more secrecy about it, so little has to change about the story and the shows timeline overall. It would be such a fun thing. It could work so easily.
