Day 16.
Death is Ah Puch Headcanon
Lol, probably not true, but it's still fun to think about.
So, I played Smite for awhile, and that's where I was introduced to the Horrific God of Decay. And I immediately thought of our beau, the Reaper.
Okay, here is an okay source that I'm gonna base my argument on. (apologies if the link doesn't work, honestly the Wiki on him isn't too bad if you want to look him up).
Ah Puch is commonly depicted as a skeletal figure with a skull mask. (Sound like our boi?) Here he is in his traditional depiction:
He is known to be accompanied by an owl. Now, whilst Dust is not an owl, he's a very, very large crow. Large enough to be confused for an owl? Possibly. Could 'big ass crow' just have been mistranslated? Much more possible.
Ah Puch thought to have been called many names, one of which being Cizin or "the Stinking One". As @imagine-darksiders is fond of pointing out, Death has a certain... aroma about him. Whether it's b/o, the stink of necromancy or simply just poor hygiene, it doesn't matter. He's a smelly man.
One of the ways to scare away Ah Puch is to mourn the dead loudly. Death? Avoiding human emotion? Madness.
He was closely related to the gods of war (War), famine (Fury, the traditional Rider of the Black Horse was Famine) and sacrifice (could be Strife, but he also doesn't like Strife so who knows).
Now, if you read the comics, Death references his Reaper form as a form that humans know and fear, and in Death's Door it's remarked that Death had used a disguise (a hooded cloak) on Earth before. Now, this could mean nothing OR it could mean that Death had been there (here?) before.
So yeah. Like I said, probably not true, but it's still fun to think about.
I drew my plague god Cizin
1. Loki, Norse god of mischief and blood brother of Odin. Many myths involve his acts of trickery, culminating with him causing the death of the god Baldr.
2. Cizin, Mayan god of the underworld and earthquakes. He was depicted as antagonizing the rain god Chac. destroying the trees he cultivated.
3. Koschei, evil sorcerer of Russian folklore. Appearing as the villain in many different folktales, it is said that he separated his death from his body, granting him immortality.
