she has been chasing ghosts and old things like that’s some way of living that won’t destroy her. that’s alright. fate had left her a perilous thing, stripped her of expectations. she keeps thinking back to that saying, beggars can’t be choosers, but lately it dawned on her that she had made her choice the moment she set off asking questions and poking where she knew the beasts laid sleeping, waiting for the flesh.

today, fate has come to her in a supermarket. it’s almost anti-climactic when you put it like that.

there’s a carton box of 3% milk waiting to slip from her hand when it feels like it’s going limp and heavy. inside her mind, the speakers go off in that commercial voice reminder, accident on isle three, please send somebody for the clean-up. one time she read in moments of extreme distress the human body goes on high alert and everything feels like it’s in slow motion. right now time feels like it has come to a halt.

she knows his face. that’s the logical fact, but then again she knows a lot of faces. she needs a correction; she knows his eyes. it’s a double-take. this isn’t the scary part. he knows her back. that? that changes everything.

( & july. )  wonwoo probably finds him very, very annoying when he snorts with the maximum amount of contempt he can display with his expression: single brow raised, corner of his lips tugging up to make it all the more impish with the boyish flicker in his eyes. what can he say? he loves pulling jokes, no matter what the situation is. he’ll probably pull some fucked up joke at the funeral, even, throwing a line at the widow: ‘and you’re officially single now—so what’cha doin’ this weekend?’

hey, you get the idea though! and with that said, it doesn’t bother him the slightest bit when wonwoo throws him a rather surly remark. jesting or not, he doesn’t have the slightest interest in complying whatsoever.  “i hope you’re not serious,”  his response pays no heed to the idea of not-talking-to-him-or-his-78-insecurities-ever-again, and you see the boy still shaking lightly through his amusement (plus some judgement). it only takes him a few moments to look to the side again, lowering his sight just a tad bit to match wonwoo’s level. the rascality in his dim eyes never seem to take flight, ever.

“actually, it’s the other way around. don’t talk to me with your seventy-eight insecurities ever again, because i ain’t ‘bout dealin’ with someone who has that low of an egoism. hangin’ around with a pussy isn’t exactly my thing, ‘ya know?”

Sana takes another long sip from her drink ━ for a minute shefinishes typing out a message on her phone only half tuning into theconversations that take place around her while Wonwoo finishes eating his friesin a painfully slow manner. She sets her phone face down on the table toinstead fidget with her cup, popping off the lid to drink what she couldn’t get withthe straw as she observes him.

It’s one of those nights that feel like it’s taking placein an alternate reality. When the minutes move slow and it’s easy to pretendthat the world outside of the Mcdonald’s they’re in ceases to exist ━ and she won’t have to gohome to either the empty apartment or her father walking on egg-shells around her. The both ofthem wanting to believe that this: her being here is working. 

“If we date, you have to hold my hand in the car. noexceptions." 

“What?” Sana says around a mouth full of ice, chewing slowlyshe stares blankly at Wonwoo and not feeling the least bit shy having been caught staring at him. It’s just like Wonwoo to say something like that without warning, or maybe he had warned her when she was only half paying attention, maybe she missed her sign some time ago. It registers fully what he’s said and again she draws another blank, before setting down her cup. 

“Well.” Sana starts picking at the chipping paint on the case of her phone, tuning into the conversations around her for a bit in order to tune out Wonwoo. She doesn’t like this side of herself that is too hyper-aware of everything about him like the way she can’t ever seem to read him in situations like this. The little grain of salt on his lip or even the twitch of his fingers resting on the table. “It’s a good thing neither of us have a car.”
