Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Taken on 16/07/2020. Turin is well known for its Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-classical, and Art Nouveau architecture. Many of Turin's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant buildings or 'palazzi' such as the Palazzo Madama were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Hard to believe, then, that of all the provincial cities in the Italian peninsular, Turin was the last one left for me to visit—though some might say I 'saved the best for last'. Turin is one of these cities that is marvellous to visit all year round—even when it's baking hot! 🥵 But yesterday afternoon, rather than heading to the beach thronged by sunseekers and holidaymakers or the mountains where showers had been forecast, I fancied going sightseeing in 'the Paris of Italy'. Flicking through this photo set of majestic buildings, all but two lined along the same street called 'Via San Francesco d'Assisi' (the last two photos were taken in 'Via Monte di Pietà) you'd think I was in Paris! Perhaps unsurprising when you consider Turin's royal past in which the French House of Savoy moved its capital to Turin in 1562 and who then embarked on numerous extravagant building projects in and around the city. What all these lovely buildings have in common, barring the balconies, is that they can only be seen when looking up. Too many tourists look down on their phones relying on Google Maps to guide them to the 'must-see spots' like Piazza San Carlo and Piazza Castello—which, by the way, are indeed really worth seeing. But by not looking up, tourists miss out on part of Turin's beauty and charm.
