Running off to the circus is a young man’s game ...

... … and that probably goes for Circus 66 too. The Home Counties four-piece (Matt guitars, Tom bass, Major drums and Annabelle vocals) put on a high-energy, no-net, three-ring show in their six-track EP Showtime to thrill the boys and girls… if not old fogies like Plunger.

Not least that old fogies might boggle at their describing their music as funk-infused blues… when in fact Circus 66 bristle with heavy rock bravado, in the blistering BSC-on-steroids riffing of opener Little Texas Princess, the punishing Halestormesque chorus of The Deal and the mosh pit pogo anthem of Until The Blues Are Gone.

There’s bags of unison bass-and-guitar, grinding riffs and air-punching belt-out-out terrace-chant choruses, led by Annabelle’s ferocious Runaways-meets-Doro vocal, snarling, belligerent and declamatory. Matt’s guitar breaks include squealing metallic accents, skittering runs, trenchant talkbox and flaring Boxy wah; Tom’s always to-the-fore bass adds punch and panache, as well as indie flavours in the tribal beat coda of Disappear and clever counterpoint to Matt’s soaring Schenkery solo in The Deal; while Major’s falling-lead-slab drums maintain a tub-thumping Glitterband beat throughout.

There are occasional hints of their self declared style(s) in the ballsy bass and clav (effect) of Little Texas Princess, in the genetically modified Mojo Working riff of The Deal and the good old boy slide on Red Mary Jane and elsewhere.

But the overall vibe to Plunger’s ears is definitely one of Converse and biker jackets, backcombing and torn skinny-fits, sweaty dive clubs and youthful ebullience.

Now we’re off for a Werther’s and Ovaltine…
