Heavy is the Crown
(Lego Monkie Kid) Sun Wukong x Reader
(Prompt - Circlet)
(Warning - Minor Season 5 Spoilers)
(Thank you for the request, Anon!)
“What happened!?” Wukong cried out seconds before his clouded landed. Your smile was one of sheer relief but all the monkey could manage in return was a horrified stare.
The world was tearing itself apart. The pillar of heaven was crumbling, the mortal realm was marred by cosmic voids, and MK was convinced sacrificing himself was the only solution. Wukong had tried to stop him but his protégé had used the tightening spell against him and flew off into the distant monolith. When the headband had vanished and freed the Monkey King from his pain, he thought little of it beyond relief that it was gone.
But now, the ache returned like a vice around his heart seeing the familiar circle of gold resting on your brow instead.
Wukong’s hand reached up but hovered just shy of touching, reluctant to confirm his worst nightmare a reality. He wanted to cry, wanted to scream, wanted to tear the cursed crown from your head and protect you from the pain it promised. When your expression fell at his hesitation, the monkey quickly caressed your cheek with a comforting coo. “How?” he asked as calmly as his growing rage would allow.
You leaned into his touch and tried to soothe him with a soft smile. “It’s okay, Wukong.”
“It is not okay!” He cradled your face, fingers tracing over the golden headband, knowing it wouldn’t budge no matter how much he wished it. “How dare Li Jing do this!”
Wukong whirled to find the celestial responsible but your quiet murmur stopped him in his tracks.
“I asked him to.”
The words washed through him like icy water from the coldest sea. Shock turned to sorrow then to anger as his mind whirled for an explanation. It all came down to one question that he finally voiced in a breathless, broken whisper. “Why?”
You fidgeted under his expectant stare but forced yourself to answer anyways. “I saw MK use the spell on you during your fight. I asked Li Jing to remove the circlet to help but he didn’t want to lose his control over you. The only way I could convince him to free you was to agree to wear it in your stead.”
Wukong didn’t speak; too stunned, and enraged, to react. The longer the silence stretched, the more your fragile composure crumpled until tears welled up in your eyes and started to stream down you face
“I didn’t know what else to do! It was hurting you! And you couldn’t fight being in so much pain! And–and–and–!”
“Oh, Peaches.” Wukong pulled you into a hug, holding you close while you sobbed against his chest. “It’s okay, please don’t cry.”
“I’m sorry, Wukong,” you sniffled. “I just wanted to help.”
“I know, my Peach.” A gentle kiss was pressed to your brow just above where the golden band kept you bound in his place. “We’ll figure this out, I promise. After everything is over and we set the world right, I’ll make Li Jing remove the circlet. Or at least, return it to me.”
You blinked the last of your tears away in surprise. “But–”
The Monkey King shushed your concerns with a gentle kiss. “I can handle it,” he assured you with a smile. “I wore it before and I’ll do it again if I must. But this isn’t your burden to bear and I refuse to let you suffer for me.”
A frown pulled your lips into a disapproving pout. “I don’t want you to suffer either, you know.”
Wukong chuckled and nuzzled his brow against yours sweetly. “I know. Maybe if this goes well, I can convince Li Jing to get rid of that thing once and for all.” After a reluctant moment, he pulled back and looked to the fractured horizon. “But first; one crisis at a time. Let’s get MK back and fix this pillar before it takes the whole mortal realm with it.”

The Circlet.
Hear me out. When Mk had put/resealed the circlet on Wukong.
Then when Mk left into the crack in the world to save said world & sacrifice himself.
The fact that Wukong would have voluntarily kept the circlet that Mk had resealed/put on him. The circlet was the only thing that made Wukong know Mk was still alive. It was the only thing reassuring Wukong that Mk wasn't dead because it means Mk was still holding the spell, and the fact that Wukong had immediately said 'no' when the Circlet started to disappear even though Wukong probably hates that thing. He would have kept it on to know Mk was still alive.
