How To:

Start off by picking 2 campers and having everyone else stand around in a circle. They should hold hands and spread out until there is enough space for someone to walk through while still being able to hold hands. Then have them let go. Your two campers who are out of the circle are your runner and your chaser. The chaser goes after the runner as they wind in, out, and around the circle. Every time the runner goes through a spot between two campers, the campers must lock hands, closing that pathway. If the chaser catches the runner, they flip positions. At any point the runner may gently push another camper into the circle and take their spot. That camper then become the runner. The game is over when all of the hands are locked.

The kids at our camp are fiercely protective of this game. It has been around for longer than any of the counselors can remember and we play it several times a week. In fact, when I first started, I accidentally called it Little Poison Dart Frog and was nearly lynched. It requires nothing but the ability to form a circle (which seems to be a hard concept for most kids and teens to grasp.)

How To: Sit in a circle, leaving enough space in the middle for someone to sit comfortably. Have everyone close their eyes as you walk around the outside of the circle. Pick two campers at random, drawing an X on the back of one and an O on the other. X is our poison dart frog, O is our guesser. Have O move into the middle, but make sure X doesn't say who they are. Now, X needs to stick their tongue out at their fellow campers without O catching on. If X, our poison dart frog, sticks their tongue out at a camper, then that camper needs to "die dramatically" and lay down, indicating they are now dead. The guesser has 3 chances to guess who the poison dart frog is and they must guess before there are 4 campers left.
