"So I saw Cinders and thought ‘huh, that familiar tho’ and got an idea.
Most gaoleers are native to the Icewarden’s domain, their thick fur making them suited to the cold. Not Cinders, though. She was hatched somewhere near the Emberglow Hearth, nestled inside the antithesis of the harsh blizzards and ice that her ancestors endured. And that, her parents say, is where the trouble started. Cinders was fascinated (some dared say obsessed) with the idea of ash and smoke. Her parents attempted to quell this rising desire for destruction by moving out of the Hearth and to the Churnscar Wharf, hoping that the waves and seaspray would cool their daughter’s fiery passions. But something much worse happened instead. Only a few weeks into their stay, the dragons of the Wharf began to claim that Cinders had been haunted by a fell omen. A glowing orange fish long whiskers that tangled around Cinders’ claws and horns. The dragons said that if this familiar did not disappear by the time Cinders wall fully grown, she would not be welcome. But in truth, Cinders was forced from her home long before that. A fire, massive and raging, broke out along the docks. Many who saw it claimed to also see a crystal-like fish, dancing in the flames as Cinders followed it excitedly. Sparks flew from the torch in her mouth, setting fire to the sails of ships and turning tethers to tinder. When the ash and dust settled, the dragons of the Wharf forced Cinders away and out across the bay to the Driftwood Bramble. There they left her, content to let the shadow flight bear the burden of the young fire starter. No one knew where she wandered from there, though the trail of burnt trees and ashes would have been easy to follow if anyone wanted to. And even then, if you didn’t follow her trail... it would have been common sense to assume she’d gone to the place named for fire."
