7th grade science class dissection, except this time instead of a frog it’s a cigar. I get asked all the time about how to spot a fake cigar. Said differently what makes a real cigar worth it? I recently purchased this Partagas Serie D No 4 from a La Casa del Habano in Beijing China on a recent trip. I attempted to smoke it and found the draw was not great. So I chopped off the burnt end and thought I would cut open the cigar to show you what a real cigar should look like inside. 1.) The wrapper on the outmost part of the cigar is thin and delicate lacking significant veins. The color is even and uniform throughout. 2.) The binder is the next layer. This is thicker and uglier tobacco used to hold all the filler leaves together. 3.) Filler leaves at the inner most section of the cigar. Note that the leaveses go the entire length of the cigar. (That’s called long filler). The leaves are bunched together long ways with different colored leaves creating different flavors (that’s the blend). Two points to make here. Notice still a LACK of veins even on this “low end” cigar. Also note that a fake cigar there wouldn’t be a “blend” of different leaves (think of these as ingredients in a recipe). Counterfeit cigars are typically filled with one type of tobacco leaf, normally what ever is lying around. This cigar is clearly authentic given what the filler leaves tell us. CIGAR NERD: Stop reading this unless you are obsessed with cigars. When judging a counterfeit cigar by looking at the filler remember it’s not that simple. For instance simple mass produced cigars such as the Partagas Series D No 4 and the Ramon Alones Special Select (just to name a few of the more popular ones) have a wider quality control standard then something more limited and expensive like a Cohiba BHK. The standards for the Cohiba BHK (just for example) are much higher then they are for this cigar. So the next time you dissect a cigar to try and tell if it’s authentic or not keep that in mind.
