I'm reading up on Government operations that involved human research, and as always it leaves me incredibly devastated.
This in particular is the "apology" for the MK Ultra experiments conducted by the CIA [document archive]. I hadn't heard about this until this year, and I find it so disturbing. Not even that it happened; but that it's not particularly known. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, of course. MKUltra involved the use of many methodologies to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.
As horrible as this is, I need to remind myself that this shit happened, and most likely, still happens. Every day. Because you know, you can always apologize for it in a couple of decades, right? It'll be easy enough to bury.
