Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
I’m the first to admit that I love dumb reality shows. I especially, for whatever reason, love talent shows. I unfortunately didn’t really appreciate Canada’s incarnation of the Idols series, Canadian Idol, until it was over. I loved it when I was about 11 during the first season but after about the second one it kind of became a joke, at least here in the Toronto area, and I only watched it every so often. To admit that you liked Canadian Idol was pretty much an invitation to have people rip on you. But then it got cancelled, and at the beginning of this year I decided to check out what I’d been missing, and I did a massive rewatch of the final season… and I absolutely loved it. The people on it were either great or hilarious or both, and on top of that there was so much unintentional humour on that show, including the clip above (host Ben Mulroney makes an extremely unfortunate phrase choice just after 2:20 LMAO). Plus, what other Idol show is going to feature people singing stuff by Matthew Good, Elliott Smith, Joel Plaskett, Feist, and a whole ton of other artists AI would never touch for fear of losing the tweens-and-moms audience? It was a lot more laid-back and more about playing music and having some fun times in the summer than drama or finding a ~superstar~. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily make for amazing TV or millions of albums sold. And it was cheesy, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that I love cheesy. :D
So it remains my guilty pleasure. Chances are it’s never going to have another season, but I maintain hope that CTV decides to do their own spin-off of The X-Factor a year or two from now. :P
(This is not about Lee Pace, Pushing Daisies or Glee. I’m calmed down now.)
Seriously, CTV, with the way American Idol’s been this year, you could totally bring Canadian Idol back now and it would look like the best thing ever in comparison. And of course, I would still love it for all the wrong reasons.
