Do you have any advice for starting a webcomic? I have characters and a plot, I just wanted to know if you have any suggestions about things such as formatting, how to stay motivated, ect.?
I canât say I have good advice for formatting except, decide on as much of it as possible before you start! What size each page is, what font you use, what medium, that kind of thing. Itâll help you keep a consistent look.
As for motivation...well, uh. I tend to keep going on discipline, really. I donât know how to motivate myself when I get home from Dayjob all tired and stuff to stop staring at the wall and work on a page instead...Iâve just been doing it so long that itâs what I do. I started doing comics when I had a graveyard shift job and eight hours of mostly-quiet time to fill, so it was pretty easy to get started and stick with it. By the time I left that job, I just had a routine, thatâs all.
Breaking your workflow up into chunks might help! Currently I do the sketch version of a page when I get home on Fridays--I finish that, and then Iâm done for the night. Saturdays I do inking. Sundays I do flat colors and/or finish the page. Usually Iâm done with the page by Tuesday at the latest, depending on the complexity of the page. Since most nights I have only a specific step to do, itâs easier to convince myself to do it.
Sorry! Maybe this isnât very good advice. But thereâs no right way to do webcomics really, and no one really knows what theyâre doing when they start out, so my way of doing things is definitely not one-size-fits-all. On the other hand, since thereâs no rules and the points donât matter, youâre free to do things however works best for you! You know what gets you to do things better than anyone.
