I have chronic nausea and I’ve found very few things that help. If you suffer from frequent nausea, please talk to a doctor they might be able to treat the cause or give you nausea meds that help! This is just based off of personal experiences and what doctors have recommended to me, they might not help everyone.
Trigger warning: This thread frequently mentions puke, as well as foods, beverages, alcohol, and hospitals. This thread is not for bulimia tips, if you suffer from an eating disorder, please reach out and seek help.
1. Identify cause: Nausea can be triggered by foods you’re intolerant to (commonly lactose or gluten), the flu, migraines, acid reflux, IBS, Crones disease, or other stomach conditions. Learning your body is best because if you try nausea meds when you just need a simple diet change, you aren’t helping your nausea and the meds most likely won’t help.
2. Avoid high acidic foods (citrus, tomatoes, bitter foods), hard to digest foods (red meats, fibrous vegetables and fruits, dried fruits) and inflammatory foods especially the nightshade family of vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, and peppers [even sweet/mild ones like bell peppers, but not black pepper, it’s not in the nightshade family]) some other common dietary triggers of nausea are caffeine (sodas, coffee, many teas, chocolate [especially dark]), carbonated beverages, whole grains, seeds, whole nuts, fatty and fried foods, and alcohol.
3. Foods that help nausea: soups, jello, fennel, ginger, bland foods like crackers, bread, rice, applesauce, eggs, pasta.
4. Teas that help are herbal teas (most herbal teas are decaf naturally, but double check which ones you buy) the best ones for nausea are: mint, licorice root/fennel, marshmallow root, ginger, chamomile, raspberry leaf, and lemon balm. It’s best to drink them without any added sugar or cream/milk, but a small amount of honey can help. I really enjoy licorice root (also known as fennel) brewed with an extra tea bag, no honey, sugar, cream, or milk and then iced. It doesn’t taste like actual licorice, but rather very sweet. Also pairs well with marshmallow root.
5. Marshmallow root tincture works wonders, I personally use a glycerin oil based one instead of alcohol based (tastes better, only need a few drops instead of 20-30 drops, and doesn’t have alcohol that irritates stomach). CBD oils and tinctures have helped me as well, but I’ve noticed a bigger difference with marshmallow root.
6. Peppermints, mint gum and ginger candy are great to have on hand if you get frequently nauseous, I always have mints in my bag just in case I do throw up, but they can soothe nausea a bit.
7. Avoiding cars, boats, rollercoasters, heavy exercise, and other fast motions can help.
8. Sit upright for 2-3 hours after every meal, avoid laying down directly after because it can trigger acid reflux.
9. The scientifically proven best position for acid reflux is laying on your left side, curled up with your head and upped body propped up. This works because it causes stomach acid to go into the larger side of your stomach and away from your esophagus, and it can help ease nausea too. I found this out simply by having chronic nausea and acid reflux myself, but then a doctor explained why it works so well for me. This is how I sleep normally and now I’m less nauseous in the early morning.
10. Eat small snacks throughout the day instead of three big meals, it can also be helpful so if you do vomit, it’s not as much and is less harsh on your esophagus.
11. Smoothies and juices are easy to digest, but avoid acidic fruits (citrus, pineapple, kiwi, etc.) and fruits with lots of bigger seeds (raspberries especially).
12. If you’re prone to vomiting, plan ahead, when I’m at the ER/Doctor’s, I grab extra vomit bags (they’re usually blue and stacked on a wall, they fir neatly in backpacks), even just a large ziplock bag would do. Plastic grocery bags aren’t the best but work in a pinch, if you can, have a double bagged grocery bag before you use it, as they break, tear, and leak easily.
13. If you feel like you will puke, get to a bathroom as soon as you can, of course, but if you are going to puke and don’t have a bag, try to at least get it onto a smooth tile floor, not on people, furniture, or carpets. That way cleaning is easier. I also carry a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with my bag so my breath doesn’t stink all day afterwords. Mints or gum work if you can’t brush your teeth.
14. If you wear makeup, be sure to check your eyeliner/mascara after because vomiting can make you tear up and get messy. Eye drops can help ease the red eyes that come with the strain of puking.
15. Stay at home! Don’t go out and about if you have any chance of being contagious! Also it’s better to stay in bed sick for a day than risk going out and being sick and miserable anywhere else. Work and school can wait!
16. My nausea kit is: vomit bag, toothbrush/toothpaste, mouthwash, mints, eye drops, marshmallow root tincture, herbal tea, applesauce cup or crackers, hand sanitizer, and handiwipes or tissues. A simpler version is: vomit bag, mints, handiwipes/tissues.
17. Water. Water. Water. The more you drink the less solid will come back up, and it can help you ease some nausea regardless. Staying hydrated is never a bad thing, but you can’t just chug a bottle all at once, you need to sip throughout the day to avoid vomiting straight water.
