I imagine Christa being a Physicians Assistant, and Omid was just her sweet and solid rock while she was going through and finishing her program. When she started work, she was able to support them both while Omid finished his PhD in American History, but he liked taking educational trips that got called "all-american road trips with stops in Vegas, for research" whenever Christa asks why they're travelling.
