Google Is Still Pushing Chromebooks
Google says itтАЩs still fully committed to Chromebooks, even after recent speculation around a possible тАЬGooglebookтАЭ laptop project. The company pushed back on the idea that ChromeOS devices are being replaced or sidelined, saying Chromebooks remain an important part of its hardware and software plans.
Part of the confusion came from reports that Google is developing a more premium laptop experience tied closely to Android and AI features. That sparked questions about whether ChromeOS would eventually fade out in favor of something new. GoogleтАЩs response was basically that multiple device strategies can exist at the same time, and Chromebooks are still growing in schools, business, and casual everyday use.
The company also pointed to ongoing ChromeOS updates, AI integrations, and partnerships with manufacturers as proof that the platform is still active. It sounds less like a replacement situation and more like Google trying to cover every category at once.
My Feedback: Google really does love having overlapping ecosystems running in parallel forever. Still, Chromebooks quietly became normal for a lot of people over the last decade, so it wouldтАЩve been weird to see them disappear overnight.
Glic Glitch
You've probably heard how Google is forcing integration of their AI LLM called Gemini into their softwares. Today I found out how much it has been integrated, as a feature called GLIC, short for Gemini Live in Chrome. Google aims to have Gemini so tightly integrated that you basically cannot do anything without Gemini, up to and including Gemini being able to click links and other options for you (itself?)
Well, I was at work using my required-for-work Chromebook and I was having a few small issues. Me, being me, I checked chrome://flags and found that a number of new flags had been added around Gemini. One allowed for Gemini to be disabled. I did so. ChromeOS rebooted and so far, so normal.
However, when I attempted to open Chrome, the screen went instantly blank and dark. It stayed that way for several seconds and then came back on. GMail still worked, as did the file manager, but any attempt to open Chrome resulted in nothing happening. I tried using the search key to search for the Chrome://flags (reasoning that one or more of the flags was at fault, especially the GLIC flag).
Sure enough Chrome://flags had its banner message about multiple crashes causing the browser to fail, so all flags are off. Which didn't fix a thing. So I unset all of the new GLIC flags, let it restart and all was well.
Conclusion: Google is so desperate to spy on, and force, everyone that they have deliberately made Chrome on ChromeOS break if you don't want to use their LLM. I'm fairly certain that should be considered making Google a monopoly, because it would not surprise me if the same thing happens on Windows, Macs, and Linux.

Okay so this issue has been bothering me for months and I need to ask: I have a chromebook, I have linux running alongside ChromeOS because that is something it offers. It is built into the chromebook so my linux files exist in the same files page as my general ones
However, currently when I try to download any .deb files in my folder, it just opens up a new file tab. It used to prompt me to install it. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it.
General Linux advice while appreciated, isn't helpful because I don't have the time to learn it, nor do I particularly want to learn a whole new computing system for something my laptop is supposed to offer anyways.
