prompt for chrisney week: it's adrian and sydney's wedding day, and sydney has become such close friends with christian she asked him to walk her down the aisle (with eddie on the other side)
"Finishing touches, I guess." Christian whispered back.Â
"Should we go check on her?" Eddie looked back toward the hallway that led to Sydneyâs dressing room.Â
Christian chewed his lip, worry swirling in his chest.Time was ticking and it wasnât like Sydney to be cutting it close to lateness for a casual lunch, let alone her own wedding. He gave Eddie a curt nod and they slipped away from the rest of the wedding party without being noticed.Â
Eddie rapped his knuckles on the door. âSydney?â he asked quietly. âAre you all set? Weâve got about 15 minutes before show time.âÂ
The moment of silence before Sydney answered was enough to solidify Christianâs something-is-wrong theory.
"Just about," Sydneyâs voice called back, sounding too high pitched. "Just give me 5 more minutes and Iâll beâ" her voice cut off abruptly.Â
Eddie immediately went into Guardian Mode. âSydney,â he said urgently. âAre you alright? Are you hurt? Whatâs happening?âÂ
"âFine!" her voice called after a moment. "Just need a minute, please."
Eddie turned to his Christian, his eyebrows quirked up in confusion. Christian shrugged, he knew something was definitely up, he just didnât know what.Â
"Youâre not getting cold feet, are you?" he called through the door, keeping his voice light.
Sydney didnât answer. Christian frowned. ââŚAre you? If you need us to sneak you out a window, weâre down.âÂ
When Sydney didnât answer again, Christian turned to Eddie. âYou got a credit card on you?âÂ
"What? No, I donât think soâŚwhy?"Â
Christian groaned. âAnything hard and plastic? An ID or somethingâŚâ
"UhâŚ" Eddie dug around in his pockets. "I have my room key from the hotelâ"
"Perfect!" Christian beamed, snatching the card from Eddieâs fingers and sliding it in crack between the door and the door jamb. He bent it back, pressing his weight against the door and wiggling the handle. Eddieâs eyes widened. "What?" Christian scoffed. After a few more seconds of futile wiggling he instructed Eddie to press his weight against the door as well, until finally they heard a loud click and they both tumbled headfirst into Sydneyâs dressing room.Â
Sydney gasped in surprise upon their unexpected forced entry into her dressing room. When Christian straightened up and looked at her, his eyes widened. She looked beautiful, of course, radiant in shades of gold and white. But her eyes were red and swollen, dark streaks of makeup running down her cheeks.Â
"I s-said I just n-needed a minute," she sniffled, her bare shoulders shaking as she spoke. He was at her side immediately, wrapping his arms around her, careful not to wrinkle her dress.Â
"Hey now," he said, giving her a cheeky grin. "Thereâs nothing to cry about. Adrianâs not that ugly.â
That got a small laugh out of her, and she smiled at him through her tears. Eddie walked over to them, frowning in concern. âSydney,â he said softly. âWhatâs wrong?âÂ
She shook her head, a fresh batch of tears welling up in her eyes. âI donât know.âÂ
"I think I might know," Christian said, reaching for her hand and squeezing it. When their eyes met, he was sure he did. Sydneyâs father was no longer a part of her life. And as tradition dictated, the father was to walk the bride down the aisle to be given away. For all intents and purposes, Sydney had no father. And as much as she may have hated him, as much as she may have been glad to have him gone from her life, Christian knew that it was still hard to deal with. No matter how badly your parents fuck up, theyâre still your parents, and it still hurts when you remember that theyâre gone. That they wonât be there for the most important moments in your life. For the little, insignificant moments. Or justâŚbe there. At all.
Christian had been given the honor of filling the role when the wedding was still being planned, and of course heâd accepted, he wanted nothing more than to be such an important part of Sydneyâs big day. But maybe that wasnât what she needed right now. âHow about I go get your mom?â he whispered. âShe can be the one toââÂ
"No," Sydney breathed, shaking her head adamantly. "That wonât be necessary. Thereâs no timeâŚ" she turned to Eddie. "You said 15 minutes?"Â
Eddie looked down at his watch and winced. âUm, 10 now.âÂ
"Oh, God, okay." Sydney blinked rapidly, taking in deep gulps of air. "IâmâŚfine. Okay. Ten minutes. I need toâŚumâŚ" she turned to look at herself in the mirror and her face contorted. She sniffed, tears threatening to spill again. "I look terrible.âÂ
"Hey. No, no no." Christian rubbed her shoulders. "No, you donât. Just breathe. Everything is going to be okay. Eddie," he looked to his friend. "Go tell Adrian weâre going to need a little bit longer. Heâll make sure the ceremonyâs delayed until weâre ready. Just say there was a wardrobe malfunction or something. And get Sydneyâs mom."Â
"No!" Sydney raised her voice before Eddie had the chance to move. "No. Guys, please. Iâm fine. Iâm fine. I just need toâŚfix myself."Â
"Here," Christian plucked a makeup wipe from the table in front of them and gently gripped Sydneyâs chin and turned her to face him. He dabbed at the black streaks that trailed down her face and tried his best to clean up the smudges around her eyes. "All better," he said, releasing her chin. She looked back at herself, still frowning.Â
"My face is all red," she moaned.
"Deep breaths," Christian ordered. "And your face is supposed to be red. Youâre a blushing bride, after all."Â
She turned back to him, her head coming forward to rest against his. She closed her eyes and he closed his. They stayed like that for a minute, not saying a word. Finally she pulled away and whispered. âI donât know what I would do without you, Christian Ozera.âÂ
He picked up her hands and brought it to his lips. âYouâll never have to find out, Sydney Sage. I meanââ he winked. âSydney Ivashkov.âÂ
"You donât think itâs too old fashioned, do you?" she asked, smiling softly. "Taking my husbandâs last name?"Â
Christian scoffed pleasantly. âNo way. This is the first human-Moroi wedding in modern history. Iâm your Man of Honor, and Jill is Adrianâs Best Woman. This wedding is already progressive as fuck.âÂ
She giggled. âI guess youâre right.â She stood up and took one last deep breath. âOkay. Iâm ready.â She linked her arms with Christianâs and Eddieâs. âLetâs go. All three of us.â She nodded, like she was deciding something very important. âDown the aisle.âÂ
"YouâŚ" Eddieâs eyebrows raised. "You want me to walk with you, too?"Â
"Yes." she said. She turned to Christian. "If thatâs okay."Â
"This is your day, Sydney," Christian said. "Whatever you want, whatever will make you happy."Â
"I love you," she said to Christian. Then turned to Eddie and repeated her declaration. To which they both reciprocated with smiles. They walked, on either side of her, out of the room and down the hallway, right up to the doors of the hall where everyone was waiting, mere minutes before Sydney was due to make her entrance.Â
"Everyoneâs going to be able to tell Iâve been crying," Sydney whispered shakily. "God, I feel like Iâm about to burst into tears right now."Â
"Sydney," Christian told her with a sigh, "The second you step into that room, everyoneâs going to be crying. Adrian, Jill, your mom, Eddie, me. Everyone. Itâll just be one big, nasty cry fest." He chuckled. "Thatâs just what happens at weddings."Â
As it turned out, Sydney kept her composure as they made their way slowly down the aisle. Christian couldnât help but smile like an idiot, watching everyone gasp and sigh as they took in Sydney in all her beauty. Adrianâs expression was the best, his lips parted and eyes wide, looking at her like a blind man who was seeing the sky for the first time. And when they reached the end of the aisle and the priest called upon Christian to state his name, as the man who would officially be giving away the bride, he couldnât help but go a little off-script from what theyâd rehearsed.Â
"Oh no," he told the priest with a smile. "No man is giving her away. Sheâs doing that herself." He gestured to Eddie, "Weâre just here for decoration." The room erupted in soft, slightly confused laughter. Adrian shook his head and smiled down at them. Eddie and Christian untangled their arms from Sydneyâs and stepped aside. Sydney held onto Christianâs hand for a moment, giving it a hard squeeze before she took those last steps up to face the man she loved. And as soon as their eyes met, Christian knew Sydney wasnât thinking about her dad, or her makeup, or anything else at allâŚexcept how utterly, deliriously in love she was. He watched as they spoke their vows, the love in their voices steady and unyielding through their tears. He watched as they kissed, a fairy-tale moment come to life, and as they took their first steps as husband and wife, hand in hand in front of everyone, that was when the tears came for him. He felt like his heart was going to burst out of his chest. He hadnât cried since he was little boy, nor had he ever felt this good since then. It seemed only fitting that both things came at once, the same day his best friend was finally getting the happily ever after she so desperately deserved. Sydney was happy. She had her life and her love. And that was all he needed to be happy, too.Â
