āDude. I donāt want to know that. ā Tucker cut him off. āCaboose wouldnāt want me to know that either. What the hell? You canāt just tell other peopleās medical history like that. ā he shook his head. āI know Caboose had to hold his breath for a while because his armor locked up and we couldnāt take it off. We didnāt get it unlocked quick enough and⦠Caboose got a bit harder to understand. But heās Caboose and I never understood him to begin with. Heās always been silly. Heās just ⦠Heās Caboose.ā
Washington nodded and pulled Tucker into his chest. āI know youāre worried about him.ā
āIām notā¦ā David glared at him. āOk. Iām really worried. Iām worried about him being stuck over there with Donut and Lopez. And the fact that Simmons is over there⦠ugh. That nerd is going to be mean to him by accident. ā
ā...Simmons lacks tact. But so do you, so Caboose is probably used to it. ā
āYouāre gonna say that when you have even less tact than me? Seriously? ā Tucker rolled his eyes. David pulled away with an offended look.
āLook, Wash. No one in the Red or Blue team gives a shit about intelligence or mental capacities. Thatās Freelancer project shit. ā Tucker said with a heavy sigh. āWe know Caboose is smart. Like Sarge is smart. Itās just that theyāre both weirdos and they have wacky personalities that make them seem stupid to outsidersā¦ā
ā...Iām still an outsider even though Iām the leader?ā
āKinda yeah. I mean, You just started to talk to me about intelligence like it matters. Thatās why Grif didnāt tell us that heās some kinda super genius and probably thinks none of us have noticed it. He didnāt tell us he was a medic until one of us nearly DIED. ā Tucker shook his head. ā And he was able to live with us because no one gives a shit. Well⦠no one whoās alive now does. Except for Simmons. But that ās cause heās insecure.ā
āPot calling the kettle.ā Washington sniped. Tucker glared at him and rolled his eyes again.
āYeah. Iām insecure. So sue me, Iām used to being treated like Iām stupid and I just learned to act like this so no one expects much from me. Same reason Grif acts like he does. We donāt want to have to do stuff we donāt want to do.ā
ā⦠Ah. So itās not lazieness?ā
āNot with Grif, itās not. He doesnāt⦠want the responsibility. āCause something happened⦠something really bad. He wonāt tell me about it.ā Tucker shook his head. āSame with Caboose. I can tell bad shit happened to them. And to Doc too⦠But I donāt ask them about it cause we have this rule. We donāt talk about our lives before we came here. That would make it harder for us to fight each other. And hurt more whenā¦ā
ā...Did someone die before Caboose came in?ā
āYeah. Our Commanding officer died. Church accidentally poisioned him with Asprin.ā
Washington made a face. ā Thatās⦠a rare allergyā¦ā he said.
ā...And the Red team lost someone too. But she mightāve just abandoned them and went Awhol. Sarge never told us what happened. She was just gone one day and no one said a word about her since.ā
Tucker paused. ā That Herandez chick⦠thatās on the maroon team, she sounds like her. ā
Washington nodded his head. āCarolina will find out if thatās the same person.ā
āIt doesnāt matter if she is. Grif would just be happy to know sheās still alive.ā Tucker shrugged.
āYou know, Grif and Caboose are the smartest human members of the Blood Gulch squad. Sarge is smart too. Actually...everyone in Blood Gulch is smarter than most of the people in the Freelancer project. ā Washington mumbled.
ā...Wash, We donāt care about that.ā Tucker said.
ā...Look,Iām not mad and I donāt think Caboose would hold it against you but ⦠donāt talk about mental capacies or intelligence around Grif or anyone else. Youāre going to make them uncomfortable. ā Tucker said after David did not respond.
āI know. Iām just..trying to say that I like being with you all. And I want to stay with you.ā Washington said.
āDude⦠no one is going to kick you out. Chill out.ā Tucker breathed, gently shoving Washingtonās shoulder. āCaboose loves you and⦠S-so do I.ā
āAw You love me?ā Washington asked teasingly. ā...You already know I do! ā Tucker grumbled.

Summary:
My rewrite of the Chorus arc.
The Team splits are a bit different from the canon universe.
excerpt:: Sarge tensed as he stood next to the injured Dexter Grif, ready to attack the strange man in green and gray armor. He was ready to protect Grif from this stranger.
Tucker and Washington stood ready to attack but they were in complete shock. Caboose had forced them to leave without him. Tucker was holding onto his stomach as blood pooled at his feet.
Washington gritted his teeth behind his helmet.
Grif was on one knee and gripping his shoulder to try and stop his arm from bleeding. The bullet was still lodged in his muscle next to a particularly active nerve. He could not see anything since someone had sniped him in the head and damaged his helmet. He would have to take it off soon.
--
Soon as Simmons and Grif reunite the Grimmons will begin. ( Sus evil laughter )
When it opened, Sarge pulled Grif into a hug. Grif tensed up for a moment before he melted into the embrace. āHey, Old man. Iām⦠Iām okay. Relax.ā he said in a soft voice. Sarge glanced at Washington. ā...Thanks for looking out for him. Weāre going now.ā
Sarge looked at Tucker and squinted at Washington. ā Donāt do anything too intense with him until heās healed,ā Sarge said. Grif smacked Sargeās shoulder plate. āSargent! You canāt justā¦ā
Grif was pulled out of the room and the door closed before he finished.
Tucker squinted at them and shook his head.
āSee what I mean. Heās totally flirting with Sarge. ā Tucker grumbled.
āā¦He was flirting with you too.ā Washington pointed out. Tucker stared at him. āWh-what?! No...he wasnāt!ā
ā He absolutely was. Heās been flirting with you since we crash-landed in the jungle. ā Washington said as he waited for Tucker to get his shirt on.
āHeās not into meā¦ā Tucker argued. āHeās into old guys and nerds.ā
āRight. And youāre a jock?ā Washington teased.
āYeah. Iām cool and sporty. Not his type at all.ā
āSimmons is very athletic and heās built. So his type is sporty guys.ā
ā...Oh my god. What if he drops Simmons and starts dating Sarge!?ā Tucker gasped as he ignored Washingtonās attempts to sway him.
ā...I doubt it.ā
ā...Wanna bet? ā Tucker asked with a smirk.
āSure. If Iām wrong and Grif starts dating Sarge then I owe you 50 bucks.ā
Grif : I've been cheating on Simmons.
Sarge : ... When did you two start dating?
Grif : What? N-no, We...We're not. We're just friends.
Sarge : ... ( tilts his head at Grif while facing forward ) Then why'd you say you cheated on him?
Grif : I ...talked to you about nerd shit and we cuddled up next to each other to watch movies. That's what I did with Simmons before...
Sarge : And that's...cheating, to you? ( he squints at Grif. ) Do you want me to stop?
Grif and Sarge are sitting down on the floor and Sarge leaning slightly against Grif's shoulder. The screen in front is showing the Star Wars prequels.
Grif : '... No. '
Sarge : Okay. Then quit stressing about it. ( he looks forward at the screen) I can't hear the movie over you.
Grif : ( he raises an eyebrow as he stares at Sarge. ) Are you actually watching it?
Sarge : Of course. That's why we're here...together in this room... by ourselves. ( he looks at Grif, and leans in a bit ) Sitting real close to each other. We're watching this movie together. And nothing else.
Sarge taps Grif's forehead with his own. Their noses touch briefly before Sarge leans back and returns his gaze to the movie.
Tucker had always assumed that Caboose would be fine no matter what. It was taken for granted that the worst injury he had witnessed Caboose suffer was a hurt toe. He had not paid attention to any of the other ones ā Because Caboose acted like he was fine.
He recovered fast. Or so...Tucker thought.
He had not been there when Church had to pull Caboose up and let the taller, heavier man lean on him⦠limping as he walked to the base. Or watched as Church struggled to treat a wound with very limited medical training. Just a first aid class he took in Basic.
Because Tucker ignored that, he stayed out of Cabooseās way and acted like he hated to spend time with Caboose. It was their thing. Church⦠was the glue that had kept them together and he wasā¦
Epsilon was gone too. The program that Caboose hung out with, partially because Epsilon was housed inside his armor or his head. Tucker did not like to think about it. He would start to worry about what Cabooseās head was like...again.
Church used to complain about Caboose to him. Bitch about how he had to take care of Cabooseās injuries all the time. Tucker started to tune out when Church talked about that.
He did not want to think about Caboose as someone whoā¦
It happened suddenly. Caboose was flanking Tucker as he went around in the Meta suit, unknowingly powered by Epsilonās sacrifice. Then Tucker heard a sickening noise and Frecklesās voice. He turned and saw Caboose lying face down. Washington rushed toward them, ignoring the fire he drew by doing it. He crouched down in an instant. Tucker remained still, the fire knocked off the Meta-armor like a harmless rock. Washingtonās whole body tensed up.
āWhere is Grif?ā he called on the radio.
āWhat?ā Grifās annoyed, exasperated voice came on. āIām kinda busy?ā
ā...Caboose needs your help.ā
There was nothing for a moment. āFuck. Hold on.ā Grif left his radio on and they heard the entire exchange between the married couple. Neither of them was surprised to see Simmons had come along. Grif needed his nurse.
āOh ...Fuck.ā Grif breathed as he crouched down. ā...Shitā¦ā he swallowed loudly. āIāll do what I can to stabilize him but you gotta call Dr. Grey to come get him,ā he said, his voice strained. Tucker knew that tone. He had been around Grif long enough to know that was not a good sign. Grif was scared.
That was really bad.
A barrier went up around Grif and the others. Tucker blinked, looking back at that. How did⦠Caboose do that? Or was it⦠No, Grif had never done that before. Simmons could not have altered his⦠It didnāt matter as long as they had a shield.
Tucker felt numb, the shock of this was too much. He turned and looked out at the battlefield. Went back to firing and fighting. His mind was distracted but he managed to disable or kill most of the enemy soldiers.
When he came back, Washington was helping the soldiers to put Caboose into the flatbed of the Truck. But he was not the only one. Sarge was the only one who was able to stand. Simmons looked like hell. His right arm was gone. Parts and wires hung out of the socket and⦠Grif.
God, Grif - he looked like he was dying. Because he was⦠heā¦
Tucker remembered nothing else. Other than Washington turning to look at him and then rushing forward. āLAVERNIUS! ā
The next thing he knew, he was sitting on a chair in a white-walled room next to Washington. Caboose was in the bed, covered in wires and asleep. But his heart was beating, and his brain activity was all over the place.
ā...Fascinatingā¦ā Dr. Grey said. ā...Iām amazed that he is able to deal with them being in there.ā she was being cryptic. Tucker missed the explanation of what she and Washington were talking about.
āI could barely hold one⦠Caboose is amazing.ā
ā⦠We canāt remove them...without risking his health so,ā Dr. Grey shrugged. ā Nothing I can do. Not that I would. They seem to be helping him. And that barrier you mentionedā¦ā
Tucker began to tune out the nerd speak. He looked at Caboose.
It hit him like a ton of bricks to the head. Caboose almost died that day. And⦠where was Tucker? Fighting⦠getting all the ā glory ā ⦠using a suit powered by their friend⦠who erased himself⦠to save them.
And Caboose ⦠Epsilonās best friend, almost died.
If that guy was here, he would be chewing Tucker out. Church would let him have it.
Tucker wondered where Simmons and Grif were. If Grif made it out.Ā
He stood up and walked out. Washington did not notice in time to stop him.
Tucker hovered outside the room that housed Grif and Simmons. Looking in through the narrow blinds at the scene. Simmons talking to that Bitters kid. And suddenly the kid was crying. Tucker felt his blood run cold.
Please not Grif. I canāt⦠lose anotherĀ friend.
But what about CABOOSE?
Tucker started running. He reached the roof and pushed open the door. There he found Carolina, staring blankly at Chorusās cityscape.
Tucker froze at the door when she turned and looked at him. She nodded her head. ā⦠Iām going to stick around,ā she said. ā I...promisedĀ himĀ that I would watch over you all. And I keep mine.ā
Tucker awkwardly gave a thumbs up. He walked into the stairwell and down a step. Then sunk down on the next row.
Tucker kept losing friends.Ā God or whatever must hate me.
He walked back into Cabooseās room and sank down next to the bed. His hand gripped Cabooseās hand tightly.
ā...Donāt. You dare. Leave me too, Asshole.ā
The next thing that Tucker knew, Caboose was awake. Alert as ever and chatting with Washington as though he had not been fighting for his life a day ago.
Dr. Grey was baffled by his recovery time. Muttered something about Them again. Tucker ignored it. He went right back to his normal banter with Caboose. Caboose looked strange without his helmet. There was something beautiful about how handsome his face was. The way his floppy, reddish-brown hair framed it. The warmth in his light grey eyes.
Tucker paused.. reddish brown? He remembered it was dark brown the last time he saw Caboose without his helmet. It had been a long time.
Caboose never took his armor off.Ā
He was paranoid like that. The last time, Church had pulled it off him. Lectured him, in a shrill tone of voice, and Caboose had completely ignored the whole thing.
But Cabooseās helmet was in his hands.
ā Youāre very lucky, Yeong-Suā¦ā Dr. Grey said. Caboose snapped his head to look at her. ā Caboose is fine, Doctor,ā he said. His voice sounded strange.
āRight. Whatever. Iām going to hold you for another day but as long as you donāt crash ā again ā Iāll let you leave tomorrow. ā they said.
She glanced at Tucker. After shaking her head, Dr. Grey turned and looked at Washington. ā Keep an eye on him for the next week,ā they said.
Caboose looked down at his helmet and started to put it back on.
āNo. Leave that off for today. You can put it on tomorrow.ā Washington said, patting Cabooseās hand. āNo one is going to take it from you.ā he eyed Tucker. āRight? ā
ā Yeah⦠I donāt want it. It probably stinks in there.ā Tucker huffed, putting a nonchalant air. Caboose stared at him and looked down.
āYou donāt have to stay here with me, Tucker. Go check and see if Griff is alive.ā Caboose said. Tucker tensed up. He stood and let out a huff. ā Fine⦠But Iām going to come back and report my findings to you guys. So⦠See you later.ā he waved and rushed out of the room.

Only the ring finger knows what you did last summer.
Simmons coughed into his hand to get Grif's attention. "Um... Gr-Dex, I wanted to... get you something before we retire," he mumbled. he held up a plain box and Dexter Grif froze in place.
Bitters, who Simmons had not noticed standing next to Grif, gasped " HOLY SHIT IT'S HAPPENING! " before he was pulled away by Mathews.
Simmons stiffened as he watched Bitters leave. Matthews turned and made a ' I'm watching you ' gesture with his hand.
Grif felt the sweat gather. The box was open and there inside were two rings that matched.
"... Simmons, I...told you the Temple thing."
"Oh... Sorry. These are Captain Rings! " Simmons said, taking one of them and putting it on his index finger.
"Oh..." Grif looked at the ring left. It had an orange star in the middle.
"... Wait. What did you Th-"
"... Forget it. Thanks, " Grif took it and placed it on his right hand's third finger.
Simmons's face flushed immediately. " DEX!! That's the wrong finger!'
"Is it? " Grif made no move to fix its placement.
" I'm hungry. I'll be in the cafeteria." Grif said with a smile.
When Grif saw Simmons later, he noticed the ring had changed fingers to the same placement as his own. Grif snickered and scouted up to him.
"Don't take off your ring unless you're a coward," he whispered
