I completely agree with what you've said about the fanbase for the show. I love this show and I know for a fact that I'm getting clumped in with the massive horde of zombies that saturate the anime fanbase in general, which blows. It's shit like that that makes it hard to find good anime like S&W. I'm also a sucker for medieval settings and this show paints it so well, in combination with it's fantastic dialogue and liquid character development, and that makes it one of my all time favorites.
I feel you… at the convention I went to this past weekend there were tons and tons of Kiritos and Asunas. And as much as I love Spice and Wolf, I’m not sure I’d be happy with seeing a million of them at a convention. It’s nice when there’s only a few… it makes it more special and unique that way.
I also love medieval settings. But Spice and Wolf’s is terribly historically inaccurate. I got past that by pretending it took place on some earth-like planet visited by the Enterprise.I cannot tell you how much that technique has helped me get over illogical things that go on in anime.
