There was never a time when Ulani didn’t go over-the-top with presents, and this time was no exception. Having had never wanted for anything for herself, she was never one to really think about the amount of money she spent for other people, and as her ama used to say, it was better to overcompensate than show up with a shitty gift. They had put way to much importance into saving face. She bit her lip as she held up the basket full of cheeses, jams and cold cuts, decorated with dried flowers and ribbons; wondering if she should have called first. She knocked on the door lightly, wondering if she was even home. “Uh, it’s Ulani. I brought you a welcome back gift or whatever.”
