The Chinese navy is about to unveil next week new buildings, including several nuclear-powered submarines and destroyers, during a maritime parade marking the 70th anniversary of its creation. Deputy Navy Commander Qiu Yanpeng, who was speaking to the press in Qingdao port south of Beijing on Saturday, said the Liaoning aircraft carrier would be associated with the demonstration scheduled for Tuesday. Purchased in 1998 from the Ukrainian Navy and modernized in China, Liaoning is the first aircraft carrier whose Chinese navy has been equipped. The heads of the U.S. and Chinese navies discussed safe interactions and maritime operations during a meeting in Beijing on Monday (Jan 14). Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and his counterpart, the commander of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA(N), Vice Adm. Shen Jinlong, addressed adhering to internationally accepted rules governing maritime operations and reducing the risks associated with interactions between the two navies at sea, according to a Navy release detailing the meeting. This is Richardson’s second trip to Beijing as CNO. “I appreciate the opportunity to visit China and to meet with Vice Adm. Shen in person,” Richardson said in a statement. “There is no substitute for these types of face-to-face meetings. Given the responsibilities that our navies have in the larger nation-to-nation relationship, we must work together. These meetings between senior leaders allow us to speak candidly about areas where we agree and about how to manage risk while we resolve our differences.” In the South China Sea, U.S. ships often steam near artificial islands that are claimed by China but not recognized as sovereign territory by international law. Other FONOPS are meant to push back against excessive maritime claims by China that are not supported by international law. Usually, Chinese officials respond to U.S. FONOPS by issuing strongly worded statements expressing their displeasure with such operations. However, in September a Luyang-class destroyer steamed on a near-collision-course with USS Decatur (DDG-73), passing within 45 yards of the U.S. ship that was conducting a FONOP near the Gaven Reef in the South China Sea. Reposted from @naval_news - China has developed its most powerful steam turbo generator unit, which military analysts said may provide a solution to the huge demand for electricity required by electromagnetic catapults on China's future aircraft carriers and electromagnetic railguns on future destroyers. Independently developed by the No.704 Institute of China's largest manufacturer of naval products, China Shipbuilding Industry (CSIC), the generator recently passed technical appraisal, marking the birth of the 20-megawatt steam turbo generator unit for ships, CSIC announced in a statement released on its WeChat account on Monday (Dec 24). The new generation of generator unit made multiple technological breakthroughs and innovative design, the CSIC statement said, noting that 20-megawatts of power is four times as much as China's current generator units and is on par with the most advanced generator units developed by the US and European countries. Twenty megawatts is sufficient to propel 10,000-ton class vessels, aircraft carriers can use multiple generators to get more power they need.
