Dedicated Server Seized by Police in China Experience
We have never heard of specific cases in China of servers being seized until it happened to our company recently. Many have asked aren’t we panicked and concerned about the internet in China yet? The answer is no and we will explain why. We have seen many cases outside of China from North America to Europe where an entire company is shut-down because a single criminal complaint stemming from a single end-user. It some cases it has caused the authorities to seize everything (as in all the servers, many examples can be found right here in North America). In this case in China it was just the server that was found to be involved in illegal activities rather than everything. We have not faced any other issues or penalties in relation to it and don’t expect to.
All of our customers are advised to follow the law of China (just as you need to follow the law of whatever country any server is in) but to specifically not engage in Adult Content/Activities, Anti-Chinese activities, Gambling or other illegal activities.
After this experience we feel somewhat relaxed that it takes a very serious situation and violation of the law to illicit this kind of response and that we needn’t fear for our entire business or client base there.
On the contrary we think your data is extremely safe in China as long as your activities adhere to the law.
We’re always glad to answer questions about the internet in China and related issues. Our experience from the onset in China has been quite different than many of the concerns we hear about from people who aren’t familiar with the internet in China.
