The 747-400 flew for the first time on 29 April 1988, under the command of test pilot James Loesch and co-pilot Kenneth Higgins. That was 30 years ago today. The maiden flight was about six weeks behind schedule due to delays with subcontractors and an extended period of troubleshooting of the 747-400’s electronic systems. That first flight departed Paine Field in Everett, Washington for a 2 hour 26 min test flight before landing at Boeing Field in Seattle. The first four 747-400 aircraft built were used in the test program- one with the General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, one with the Rolls Royce RB211-524G/H engines, and two with the Pratt & Whitney PW4056 engines. Interestingly when the first 747-400 was rolled out on 26 January 1988 at Everett, the first 737-400 was rolled out at Renton, making it the first double jetliner rollout in Boeing’s history.
