They meet at Bal's wedding when Gil notices Chad off in the corner alone and asks if he'd like to dance.
It's almost love at first sight.

Gil keeps stepping on Chad's feet, Chad's dancing is awkward—he's not quite used to dancing with people of Gil's stature. But they make it work. Chad gets lost in Gil's eyes and Gil thinks Chad's tux compliments his eyes and curls.

Both of them are quick to realize that the other is smarter than people give them credit for.
Gil laughs the first time he reads that Chad wanted to be a trophy husband and wonders how that made it into the yearbook.
Fredrick (Chad's grandfather) doesn't approve but Chad's not too bothered by it because when has his grandfather ever approved of anything he's done in his life ever?

Ella and Kit are a bit wary at first when they find out Chad's dating Gil, since they attended Merlin Academy with Gaston and niether of them have fond memories of him—BUT they get over it rather quickly once they realize Gil is a ball of sunshine.
Chloe adores Gil. Gemma and Gabriel (Gil's siblings) adore Chad.
Chad's dog, Rosebud, and his horse, Cinnamon, both love Gil immediately. The LeGume Family dog—Sam—and Gil's cat, Patchy, both take awhile to warm up to Chad.
Gil's friends (and older brothers) are skeptical of Chad. Some of them (including Jay) tried to talk Gil out of dating him. It didn't work.
He gets at least twenty different shovel talks.
But it's fine, because a couple of Chad's friends return the favor.
Their first official date is at Dr. Facilier's Voodoo Arcade because Chad let Gil pick. Their second official date is a picnic.
Gil lifts Chad up for fun sometimes (and when they're in danger). Chad gets very red every time.
Chad is surprised (and a little envious) at how strong Gil is and still doesn't know how it's humanly possible.
They watch the Finn McMissile and McQueen movie trilogies together all the time. As well as Royally Blonde, because the main character reminds Chad of Gil.
Chad is the reason Gil found his favorite show of all time—Wild Catz.
They work out together.
A lot of their dates revolve around physical activities like going to trampoline pranks, swimming, etc or going out to different places to eat. Though sometimes they just stay home and play video games or watch movies.
One time they had an unofficial, impromptu date were they just helped one another babysit.
Another time they played dodgeball—one of them ended up with a broken nose (it was Chad: based on the fic that got me to ship them "Gym Shorts and Nosebleeds" by Frozensnake53).
Gil likes to sew and carve gifts for Chad on occasion.
One time Chad surprised Gil with a giant stuffed penguin. That was the moment Gil knew he wanted to marry him.
Chad ends up becoming a racecar driver, though he still prides himself on being a trophy husband.
Gil, on the other hand, just follows Uma into whatever job she takes up next—as does most of the crew. And if he ever retires from that, he becomes a tailor.
One time Chad fell when trying to sit down and then tried to play it off. Gil laughed so hard chili came out of his nose and he nearly choked. Chad has never been more impressed in his life.
Chad's parents are definitely the type to show off the truly ridiculous amount of baby photos and home videos they have of him to his partner—Chad finds it embarrassing. Gil finds it sweet and is a bit envious of it, because he doesn't have a ton of pictures of him when he was young—not after his mom died.
They end up moving into a nice homely cabin not far from Charmington Castle.
They end up having two kids named Georgie and Charlotte.
The two of them really get on well with one another's siblings.
Jr warmed up to Chad pretty quickly after finding out that he not only liked cars, but knew a lot about them, as well. Much to Gil's amusement.
Though it's not really surprising that Chad gets on so well with Jr, Bronze, and Gabriel given that they're all sporty.
The same can be said for Chloe and Gil. Though Chloe also likes Gil because he listens to her prattle on about history without a complaint. Oh and because they both like dragons. The dragons part is very important.
Chad learned how to make flower crowns from Audrey so he could make them for Chloe, which later came in handy when Chad started spending more time with Gil's younger sister, Gemma.
Chad buys dolls for Gemma whenever Gil and he go around to visit. He also brings dog and cat treats for the pets and toy cars for Gabriel.
He helps get Gabriel into drumming lessons.
If Chad ever needed help hiding a body, Gil would do it—hands down, no questions asked.
Chad has some really sappy and admittedly cringe-y nicknames for Gil.
Whenever there's a mouse in the house, Gil will remove for Chad since he knows Chad is afraid of them.
Both of them are mama's boys.
Chad hates Gaston's guts. Gil feels the same way about Fredrick.
They both bond over their similar interests and insecurities.
Gabriel ends up with a few hand me downs from Chad since they have similar interests and tastes in things like shows, sports, and bands.
Gil helps Chad explain things to Chloe before she goes to Auradon Prep (he wanted her to have a heads up on how he acted before it could cause her any trouble and to apologize in advance).
Gil was surprised to find that before Chad attended Auradon Prep, he was home schooled. Sure, he knew homeschooling was a thing but he thought most parents didn't bother because they didn't want to be around their kids longer than they had to be.
Chad learned a lot about the isle from Gil and it made him even more remorseful for his actions than he already did.
Gil is impressed at how good at stealing Chad is.
They bake together.
Gil teaches Chad how to sew.
Remember how he repaired Uma's necklace in the books? Well, he does a similar thing for Chad. But instead of a necklace, it's a watch.
They end up adopting a few more dogs after moving into together.
