“Planning an evening out, Dr. Chilton?” Dr. Gideon said, leaning against the bars of his cell. “You always did have a flare for the melodramatic.”

“Dr. Gideon,” he said in greeting as he let Will into the adjacent cell, closing the door behind him before freeing him from his handcuffs. The building rattled with the thunder, rolling even closer now.

“Despite our tumultuous last meeting,” Gideon said, lightly tapping against the stone walls, “I can’t help but feel that it’s killing you to not have me back in your chair. There was so much more you wanted to talk to me about.”

“I trust Dr. Singh is able to continue your therapy to the best of his or anyone’s ability.”

“But he doesn’t do it like you do, Frederick. I don’t think anyone does.”

Chilton smiled to himself as he glanced into Gideon’s cell on his way back out of the block. “It’s nice to be remembered.”

 “Nobody else is that unethical.”

Disclaimer: This is going to be so, so difficult because I’ve had so many headcanons and ridiculous crack and serious discussion about Abel Gideon over the past year or so. It’s actually sort of how I met my fiancee and basically this is going to be a very, very condensed version of the huge wealth of information I have stored away in my head right now. 

Why I like them: So at first, I liked Abel Gideon because he was sassy and charismatic and played by Eddie Izzard and he was this gorgeous little ball of murder, and then it all went to hell. I met my partner who was much more obsessed with Hannibal than me at the time, and he had these incredibly in depth headcanons about Gideon’s life and psychiatric analysis and mannerisms. He was so in tune with this character and got scarily close to being inside his head. After months of fanfic and cosplay and art all being dedicated towards our love of Abel and Frederick, I realised I’d gained an understanding and appreciation of this character that extended well beyond the realm of canon and probably beyond Bryan Fuller himself. 

Why I don’t: The only thing I dislike about Abel is the fact that we don’t get to know more. I really wish they’d elaborated on his life before and during his stay in the BSHCI. 

Favorite episode (scene if movie) Overall, my favourite Abel episode is Antipasto, because it’s the only one that legitimately made me cry. I think it was something about the realisation that he probably didn’t care that he was dying. He’d lost everything by that point. He’d had both his mind and his body taken from him and had no way of reclaiming them, but he made sure he wasn’t the only one who suffered. He was bitter and antagonising towards Hannibal and I love that.

Favorite season/movie: Season one, purely because we get so much insight into his relationship with Frederick. 

Favorite line: My favourite Abel Gideon line actually didn’t make it into the show. We examined the original script and there was a line in there where he’s being asked about his motives for butchering his wife. He was asked whether it sexually aroused him and he replied with “My wife stopped having that effect on me long before her death.”

Favorite outfit: His jumpsuit, because it’s what we see him in when he’s at his healthiest. It really says a lot that he looks more crushed and depressed at Hannibal’s house than in prison. 

OTP: Chideon, occasionally Abel/Alana or Abel/Hannibal.

Brotp: In our fanon universe he has a med student who he mentors. I also like him being friends with Freddie Lounds, or Rafael Barba who we headcanon as being Frederick’s older half brother. 

Headcanon: He can occasionally be found stress smoking after an intense shift. 

Unpopular opinion: He’s softer than he seems in the show and genuinely wanted to get better before the psychic driving. He cooperated because he wanted to get help and not because it would get him better living conditions/treatment.

A wish: For him to have a happy life. That’s all I want. 

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Sub!Gideon or him being brought back with some convoluted explanation of how he survived.
