Issue #1: The Date That Took a Wild Left Turn π©
Hi friends, and welcome to my first storytime newsletter!
If youβre here from Instagram, you probably already saw the reel that kicked this off. If notβbuckle in. Because this story went from cute and curious to cartel and blocked in less than 48 hours.
ποΈ The Setup: Bumble Promises
I matched with a guy who seemed absolutely ideal on paper. He said he was 38, tall, funny, and shared my interest in culture and travel. He seemed super fascinated by the fact that Iβm Mexicanβmy olive skin, my background, and the assumption that I might want to return βhomeβ someday.
We agreed to meet halfway in Oxford (which, for me, was a bit of a missionβIβm usually a local-dates-only kind of girl), and everything felt like it had potential.
π© The Date: Cuteβ¦ Until It Wasnβt
He greeted me with compliments and charm. Sure, he wasnβt as tall as heβd claimed, and later, Iβd find out he wasnβt even the age he listed. He was actually 48βnot 38. But I kept an open mind. The date itself wasnβt bad. We laughed, we talked, we connected.
That is, until he asked how many other guys Iβd brought to Oxford. Not in a playful way, either. It felt like a weird insecurity pop quiz. I played it off with a joke, but something inside me started to itch.
π The Call That Changed Everything
The next day, after barely texting, he called me. What started as a casual chat quickly went sideways. He expressed disappointment that I didnβt want to move back to Mexico. Thenβcompletely casuallyβhe mentioned that some of his friends were involved with the cartel. No big deal, right? π
That was the moment my gut said: this is not safe. I knew my boundaries, my ethics, and my family history (which includes a judge and government workers), and there was no way I was entertaining someone who saw that as acceptable.
To top it all off, I later found out heβd blocked meβon WhatsApp, Instagram, everything. Why? Because I had told him Iβd dated Black men before. Apparently, that was a problem for him.
So the βperfectβ date unraveled into a racist, dishonest, and potentially dangerous situation.
π What I Learned (So You Donβt Have To)
β¨ Your gut always knows.
β¨ Donβt downplay red flags just to βgive someone a chance.β
β¨ Values arenβt negotiable.
β¨ And no matter how cute someone seemsβif they bring up cartels casually, run. π¨
Thanks for reading my first storytime drop. If youβve ever been blindsided on a dateβor just want to share a βwhat just happened?β momentβreply to this or DM me. Iβd love to hear it.
