TL;DR Version: The Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich from @McDonalds is decent tasting, not spicy, and not in the same class as the spicy chicken sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, Popeye’s, or Wendy’s. Full Review: This month McDonald’s apparently attempted to cash in on the Chicken Wars that ramped up last month by introducing their own new chicken sandwich. Conceptually it was was a fine idea since Popeye’s overextended its supply line like Germany/Napoleon in Russia and there was a gap to fill. However, this McDonald’s sandwich doesn’t do nearly enough to fill that gap. Visually, it looks like the McRib: meat covered in BBQ sauce with pickles and onions. But the spicy BBQ sauce tastes nothing like the McRib and it’s not really “spicy” either. The overwhelming note is smoke, like “someone shotgunned smoke straight into my mouth” levels of smoke. It tastes fine with a pretty standard, evenly breaded, fried chicken filet. If we weren’t in the middle of a fried chicken renaissance this might have been an acceptable entry, but this doesn’t rate with what Chick-fil-A and Popeye’s are doing and a “spicy” sandwich should at least be spicy. The macros aren’t bad at 530 calories, 19g of fat, 64g of carbs, and 26g of protein. If you’d prefer a smokey BBQ fried chicken sandwich to a spicy chicken sandwich, this might be what you’re looking for.
