CAPTAIN MARVEL VOL. 8 #7-8 NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2014 BY KELLY SUE DECONNICK AND MARCIO TAKARA
SYNOPSIS
Carol goes back to her ship (Harrison), where Rocket has been tinkering with the A.I. while investigating the price of a Flerken in the market. Turns out, Rocket asking questions brought the wrong attention and now the ship is being attacked by the goo.
Rockets puts the A.I. but it can only speak flerken, and in the moment least expected they discover that Chewbie was in fact a flerken and layed a huge amount of eggs.
The eggs start hatching, so Tic tries to put them in a shuttle to protect them. Rocket learns that Chewbie is the last known Flerken and starts sympathizing with it more. They eventually defeat the goo, but now Carol feels she can no longer protect Chewbie and decides to leave her with her flerkittens at a refuge.
Tic convinces Carol that Chewbie can continue being with her and the flerkittens will be safe at the refuge.
REVIEW
If this story doesnβt touch you on the funny side, it will do on the sad one. Or both. Specially if you are a cat person (I am not). This is probably my favorite Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) story. And in the end you may think Chewbie is not making the right choice... but this is pretty common with cats. Or at least with stray cats. Not sure how stray Flerkens behave.
Another thing that really works in favor of this story is that... of course Rocket was right, he usually is! This started like an Alf/Lucky situation, but I am happy by the way it evolved.
For a character that I still feel I donβt know well enough (even if sheβs been around for more than 30 years), knowing this side of her actually helps a lot. Kelly Sue Deconnick writes very personal stories with the character, even when they are about saving a planet, the problems somehow relate to the characters. In this case her decision to leave the flerken behind (and then take it back) helps illustrate the character for us.
The art feels a bit cartooney in this story (I feel Chewbie was a bit more menacing in the previous story), but that scene with the eggs looks great, I am not sure David Lopez would have made it look so funny and cute.
I give the story a score of 8
