I can understand skeptical people, but I've seen a lot of people saying they aren't interested because they know that TayNew won't be able to bring the same vibes as the OG Japanese version, and many have been pretty rude about it. I have limited experience with TayNew, but they've been acting for a long time, and are talented. I can't say they would be able to create the same feeling as the original, but I do think they have the ability to create something that's good. One of the things that's kind of fun about these remakes is you do get to see some different takes.
I love the Cherry Magic movie, there's a very beautiful story and energy throughout. It made me want to cry almost immediately, and that's due to the skill of the actors. tbh. But I do think it's a disservice to other actors to say "why bother, you can't do as well, we don't want this." It's purposely hurtful, but also untrue.
Like when I think about actors that I've seen portray different 'versions' of characters, I can't really think of many that just did flat out bad jobs. Like...I did a quick search for examples that I recall.
Robin Hood (this is JUST live-action film, there's animated and TV versions of him too.
Sherlock Holmes (again ONLY film, not television, which includes some pretty iconic interpretations of the character).
You have Merlin (King Arthur has a pretty wide range of film media too)
And here we have a list of well-known actors who have portayed Juliet Capulet
And I'll stop here with Fitzwilliam Darcy (or what is meant to be an approximation of him). I did have to include Television here because in fairness, some of the most iconic portrayals of Mr. Darcy are from miniseries.
Now, have I seen every piece of media on these lists? No. But I have seen at least 4 different versions of these characters, more for some. And of what I have seen I would never argue that one actor embodies the TRUE ESSENCE of the character. They all bring something unique to the story, because they all have different life experiences.
I really do think that Tay and New can bring a version of Kiyoshi and Yuichi to life that will be just as heartwarming and sweet as the original film. It seems odd to write it off completely, even if you are basing your skepticism of it on previous roles. Because I'll be honest with you...watching Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman changed the way I saw his interpretation of Edward Cullen.
I also see some mentions that Thai BL's just can't bring that sweetness, but honestly, I think we get that sweetness regularly, it's just sort of split up with other things because these are often series, not films, and so the story is built out with other things. But just thinking of the BL's I've watched in the last few months, I can pick out exact scenes that really brought a similar feeling to my heart as the Cherry Magic movie.
But I guess I'll stop ranting... but please remember to be kind. Also, we didn't even get a trailer for this film, only what is almost a character poster, which is next to nothing really, in terms of relating what the final product will be.
