oh maybe -
chelai was training to be a diplomat when she heard that her [insert parent here] (they were technically part of the sith order but had largely left that by the wayside after marrying and starting a family, but it allowed their family a measure of social standing for relatively little work) died in some political nonsense that reeked of foul play, but since chelai already had a 'career' and her other parent was already a high-ranking official in the military, the expectation to join the sith order and salvage their family's standing and prospects would have fallen to her little brother, who i think is like. comically younger than her by about a decade (accidental kids be like) - he also doesn't have a particularly strong force bond, something that everyone was kind of hoping would develop as be got older.
so here her brother is, eleven, bags packed, chest puffed, ready to go do his best (and die. chel knows with certainty that he is not old enough nor mature enough to succeed amongst the sith), and she just Cannot let this happen. her other parent was just letting it happen - not without regret. not without sadness. but with the sense of inevitability that i'm sure is very common amongst parents in the empire.
so chel hands in her resignation to the diplomatic corps, throws herself into a combat drills w/ her family's trainers (she was trained a long time ago by her sith parent and these trainers, when they still thought she would end up following in her footsteps, before her brother was born), and then packs herself off to korriban.
her viewpoint is formed by her parents and the touchstone that her family provides - she isn't motivated by hatred, or vengeance, or fear (well, probably a bit of fear), so the sith code feels hollow to her. she isn't impressed by dogma, but the delicate political maneuvering and very pointed shows of force (always with a purpose, a meaning -) have captivated her more than philosophy could. so the sith are a means to an end, right now, and she's immensely determined to not die, because she carries her family's future and legacy on her shoulders.
