Short fic prompt: John and Sherlock meet for the first time in high school GO
If there's one thing in the world that John Watson hates more than anything, it's Mondays.
It's not for the usual reasons like having to get up early or not getting to spend as much time as you want with friends. It's just knowing that, exactly at 8:30 in the morning, he has to spend his first hour of the day in maths with Mr. Anderson.
Harry teases him about it without mercy as she drops him off at school every morning, telling him to 'suck it up' or 'it's only for two more semesters.' But even from consoling words from his sister, or his parents, or his small group of friends, John hates Mondays.
Until today.
The Calculus room fills up relatively quickly in the morning, the previously quiet room suddenly consumed with loud voices talking about trivial things or giggling about some joke. John likes to take the time before each class to try and read a few pages from his book, so he barely notices the figure that moves next to him at first. He only notices when an unbelievably deep voice cuts above everyone else to ask, "May I sit here?" When John looks up, he matches the voice to an imposingly tall boy dressed almost entirely in black except for a thick blue scarf staring back down at him.
"Oh, uh, of course. Go ahead. " John replies with a throat that suddenly feels dry, moving his notebooks out of the way to make room for the stranger. The boy sits down quietly and begins unpacking his own things, and John barely has time to think about it any more before Mr. Anderson walks into the room and starts the lesson.
The first part of the class go by slowly, John attempting to listen to the lecture but falling behind rather quickly as soon as the numbers begin to be replaced by letters and the letters by weird symbol things that leave him completely bewildered. What is that? a S? Since when does maths use something besides numbers? For all John comprehends, he could be looking at braile.
He's just about ready to give up completely when Mr. Anderson taps his chalk on the board for emphasis, finishing with a triumphant "... and that is how we reach the answer 42!" before turning to the class with a slightly coy look on his face. John is even more lost than before, and he has a feeling that everyone around him is feeling equally the same. John's just about ready to wave a white flag of defeat in the air when that bone melting voice next to him rings through the silence.
"Wrong."
The shock races through the class like a storm, backs turning quickly to look at the speaker. John too is equally suprised, turning his attention to the boy who seems to not notice everyone else around him. Instead, the ends of his mouth curve into a slight smile as he stares with wry amusement and frustration at the teacher in front of him. Mr. Anderson's eyes widen dramatically at first, but immediately narrow with annoyance at being so rudely criticized.
"Ah, you must be the new boy. Sherlock Holmes, wasn't it? Pray tell, what exactly did I do wrong?" Mr. Anderson asks sarcastically, and John notices the few students around the room who start whispering to their seat mates nearby. Oh god, why did he have to do that?
John is suprised yet again by the bitter laugh that comes from the boy beside him, who leans forward into his desk and locks his hands together. Everything in his air just breathes mockery. "Besides everything? For one, the derivate of the second function that you took is completely missing half of it's components. Instead of splitting up the equation, you could have taken the indefinite integral of the entire thing and substituted in-" "Mr. Holmes!"
"-and furthermore any oaf whose passed grade school can tell that your math mistakes would have added up to 57, not 42."
John notes that Mr. Anderson's face has turned beet red at this point, mouth curled in complete anger with his gaze practically digging a hole into the student's face. However, no noticable change in emotion has occured in his sudden rival.
"That material will not be be covered in our text books until the end of this entire course, how did you know that?" Mr. Anderson asks after a minute with an obvious force to control his temper.
Sherlock only rolls his eyes in a completely frustrated fashion, letting out a huff of air as if to say 'What an absolute moron you are.' "A quick glance at the textbook showed me everything I needed to know. It's practically child's play, really. But that doesn't change the fact that you got the answer wrong, so therefore I suggest you take a look in it yourself before feeling obligated to teach a class like this." Before Mr. Anderson can let out another completely furious reply, Sherlock cuts him off. "At first I thought your incompetence was because of your lack of sleep, but I can tell from the crumpled state of your shirt and the two cups of coffee on your desk that there were more .. interesting things occupying your interests last night."
John can barely stop the sudden words coming from his throat as he breaks the following silence in the most innapropriate way possible.
"That was brilliant!" He lets out suddenly, staring at the enigma next to him before realizing that the words he thought he was thinking before actually transferred over to his mouth. John turns slightly to see that every pair of eyes, including Mr. Andersons, have turned to look at him. Someone on the other side of the class lets out a clipped laugh, but John barely notices as he sees Sherlock body tense up in shock before turning his impossibly light eyes towards John while almost sending a shiver down his spine. 'Why would you say that? You're going to be in so much trouble and now he probably thinks you're some sort of freak! Good going there, Watson."
But for some reason, the boy hesitates before giving John a strangely kind smile. "Uh .. thank you." he practically whispers, and John barely has time to open his mouth in reply before Mr. Anderson lets out a shrill noise of annoyance.
"Mr. Holmes. Principal's office. Now." He points his finger to the door and begins yelling about 'respect' and 'complete lack of filtering', but John barely hears any of it as he watches Sherlock get up with a sigh and head to the door. But before he leaves, he shoots a quick glance towards John that he can't seem to recognize. Thankful? Amused? Pitiful?
The class practically erupts as soon when the door closes, voices everywhere asking questions to one another. The only thing John does, however, is lean back into his chair and let out an amused huff of laughter at the sudden change of events. John begins liking Mondays after that.

Mycroft and Lestrade walked briskly under their umbrella in the rain while smoking cigarettes. This is what they did as film noir/old-timey crime detective movie partners. When they're not having rough gay sex, that is.

cheekbonesandupturnedcollar replied to your post: Talk to me!! Math class is so painfully boring ; _ ; Hello! Just think about lots of Sherlock. Pretend you’re Sherlock and analyze your classmates and professor. Deduce things about them and talk to them later and see if you’re right! I do that a lot. C: Hmm that's a good idea. I just might have to give that a try.
