Vaughn Bode was born on this day in 1941. Sadly he died at age 33, two years before Heavy Metal came out. It was a privilege to publish @vaughnbodeofficial “Sunpot” in color in our first several issues, and to work with @markbodeofficial as well. Vaughn Bode will be making an appearance in Heavy Metal 300, his first since 2007. Sunday was the last day of Comic Con — thanks to everyone who came to see us in San Diego, it was a blast. And now, as we catch our breath, we oughta mention another special thing about July 22 — it would have been Vaughn Bode’s 77th birthday. Though Vaughn died in 1975, almost two years before Heavy Metal debuted on newsstands, we were privileged to serialize his “Sunpot,” in color, beginning in that first issue, and (later) his “Zooks.” Creator of Cheech Wizard, Cobalt 60, Junkwaffel and numerous Bode Broads (pictured), Vaughn was a true comix original, and is survived both genetically and artistically by his son Mark Bode.
