September 25, 2022 - Chattering Lory (Lorius garrulus)
These parrots are found in the forests of North Maluku in Indonesia. They feed on fruit, seeds, nectar, buds, and pollen. Breeding from June to November, pairs usually nest in tree cavities where females lay two eggs. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due largely to capture for the pet trade, as well as habitat loss from deforestation.
Featured Birds: WUEWUEWUE Red Bird Gumi and Kuromi (RIP).
Lorikeet Advice: They're both entertaining and beautiful, but not many people think about their super-soaker poops. It's completely normal and stems from their nectar-based diet. To seasoned Birdhists, we're desensitized, but it might be off-putting to new, fledgling Birdhists. Always learn as much as you can about a species of bird before bringing them into your family.
