14th February. A date that usually went unnoticed by Carmen. You know why. Walking on roofs, she was heading to a museum where a major heist was planned tonight. The young woman was thougthful. 14th of February sounded different this year. She had a little hope surfacing in her heart since she realized what day it was.
Would she be able to see ... ah, certainly but she wouldn’t have time. Even so, having a glance at her favourite inspector, a smile, would be better than nothing. Ever since Venice, Chase acted differently toward her. He changed his mind, it was obvious. Carmen got surprised when he lent a hand for the first time. He informed her about ACME’s incoming, then cleared a path for her to get away. Devineaux smiled to her when she passed near him.
Later, he rescued the siblings from a operative. Sandiego finally accepted to discuss with him. He expressed his will to help her, beginning by disclosing intel about his teammates moves. Then, they teamed up several times. Chase proved to be efficient, not questioning her leadership or skills, instantly trusting her as if they were partners since forever. He was reliable and supportive.
About their interactions ... it didn’t change. Sassing at each other has always been their thing. Carmen sighed. Except that it shifted now. How could she let her guard down, she was supposed to know better ! It could endangered him even more. But no. Slowly, naturally they started downright flirting. Carmen didn’t realize immediately what she was doing. It was just part of the game. They were closer, allies. Perhaps friends. She never thought about romance, it would be nothing but foolish in her situation.
However, she couldn’t stop. It started each time immediately. Admitting outloud that she liked this new facet of their relation was a different story. Player indicated that she was good to go, security system down. Carmen focused. She entered the place. Silently approaching, she heard the operatives in motion. And ... a silhouette too. She widened eyes and mid-opened her mouth. What the ... he took their bag. Of course, an operative spotted him. Carmen closed her eyes with a breath. Typical Devineaux here. He had to steal their loot.
However, is not Carmen Sandiego who wants to. She went back on her steps. Chase exited the museum, operatives on his tail. Carmen followed since the roofs. He skid on a street. Her grappling hook clicked, she dove. Devineaux stopped before a wall. Crap. As he turned to face his opponents, ready to fight, he spotted a slim silhoutte. The operatives were dealt with quickly. He narrowed eyes.
“ You shouldn’t wander alone at night inspector. It’s not safe.” he heard.
A smile stretched his lips. Carmen walked to him. He approached as well.
“ And why is that ? Since there’s a crimson shadow watching over me I”m perfectly safe.” he replied suavily.
Carmen chuckled, her eyes sparkling.
“ Still, be cautious will you. Stealing their loot was risky.”
“ And if I say it was a way to lure your attention ?” continued Devineaux.
“ What ?” answered Carmen, surprised.
“ Well, it is a special day today. I was hoping to see you and give you this.” he explained, rummaging in his inside pocket.
He exited a red rose and a medallion. Carmen displayed astonishment, her heart racing while collecting the gifts. It was a medallion similar to hers. She opened it, to find a photo of a man ... and a woman. Carmen gasped.
“ I heard you asked Chief to find your mother. We found several photos of them, but she was hardly visible. So I asked a friend of mine in Interpol. He got that one where you can see her face. I just hope ... I didn’t get the wrong person.” explained Devineaux.
Basing on those photos it should be her. Her mother ... her mother’s face. Carmen caressed the photo. She gave him a moved look.
“ Happy Valentine day, miss Sandiego.”
She blushed, biting her lip. The flower smelled really good. Closing the medallion Carmen approached him. Her hand surrounded his neck, making him lean to her. She kissed him a bit strongly on the cheek.
“ Thank you. Happy Valentine day to you too.” she whispered.
Chase had a mischievous smile, before returning the favor.
“ Thanks for saving me.” he made, taking her hand.
Their hand released, as she was preparing to leave. An instant later she was leaping. She gave him one last look before disappearing in the night, breathing her rose on the way.
