We all Pretend to be the Heroes on the Good Side CH07
The plan unfolds through the eyes of the unknowing.
Kendra awoke to the sound of shouting echoing throughout Blackwell Keep. Kendra jumped out of bed and sprinted across her bedroom. She stood right in front of the door; hand grasped around the handle. She paused; she noticed from the time she had jumped out of bed to the time she had reached the door, the shouting had stopped, mostly at least, she could hear the sounds of Brackenâs voice but couldnât make out was he was saying exactly. Maybe she shouldnât go out there, what if the threat was already inside Blackwell Keep? But how would it have gotten inside the Keep anyways? It was practically a fortress, plus it had all the extra protections provided from the treaty. Kendra decided to take the smartest way forward.
âBracken?.. Can you hear me? Whatâs going on? Is it safe for me to come out?â Kendra yelled out, unconfidently, her ear pressed directly against the door. She waited a few moments but didnât hear any reply. She was about to slowly creak open the door, but then she heard the sound of Brackenâs voice struggling, seeming hurt, maybe? She couldnât tell through the door.
âKendra! Donât leave your room, the Keep has been compromised. Iâll come and get you; we need to stick together.â He yelled back, clearly having to put a lot of effort into saying each word.
Kendra waited anxiously behind the door, she had then noticed the unusually low temperature in her room, she started shivering. She knew Bracken was a little far away but surely, he would have reached her room by now. What was taking him so long?
Then she heard someoneâs feet dragging across the floor. She hoped it was Bracken, because she had practically no way to defend herself. She stepped back and watched as the door was opened in front of her. Now she noticed why the personâs feet were shuffling; Kendra was overcome with a sense of dread like nothing else. She was so petrified that she stood paralyzed, waiting for the person behind the door to reach her.
Bracken came out from behind the door, helping ease a bit of Kendraâs anxiety but the magical fear still dug deep into her heart. He hobbled closer and grabbed her hand. They both immediately felt rejuvenated, no longer feeling the effects of the magical fear, though the room was still obviously quite cold.
âAn artifact is being used somewhere around Wyrmoost, not here, not yet at least. Itâs long ranged so it can spread fear from far away even though the person using it is nowhere near us. We must go get the others and unfreeze them.â
âWonât we be safe in Blackwell Keep? The protections will keep us safe surely.â
âIf the artifact can reach through the protections, then that means itâs weakened or the person wielding it is too strong. Meaning we must abandon Blackwell Keep now, or else that person and their allies will meet us here, and I doubt theyâre coming without full confidence in winning. Letâs grab your medallion then we must go help the others.â Bracken explained, he had lost most of his calmness that he usually carried. They both ran over to her bedside table and retrieved the medallion and Brackenâs horn, then ran downstairs. They went and found everyone else, Calvin, Grandma, Grandpa, Vanessa, Tanu, Camarat, Agad, and finally Warren. They connected in a chain to avoid being frozen by the magical fear. Agad told them they must go down to the Barrel and escape to Fablehaven immediately, Kendra couldnât believe how fast everything was falling apart, yesterday she was mourning the loss of her brother and now she was running for her life, likely from the people who had taken him from her in the first place.
âIt is likely that Wyrmoost will fall today, Iâm sorry I should have seen this coming, the castle that Seth freed housed a powerful artifact that was locked up because of this exact scenario.â Agad said regrettably as they finally reached the room with the Barrel.
âOkay everyone, hop in, Iâll go in last. The rest of you guys are more useful to the cause.â Warren said with a smile, Kendra always appreciated his optimism and selflessness.
âKendra, Warren, and I will go last to ensure everyone can get out without freezing up.â Bracken suggested. No one protested, everyone filed up and waited for the next person to be taken through the interdimensional barrel so they could be next. Finally, it reached the last threeâs turn to be saved, Kendra hopped in first, Bracken was in the process of stepping in but suddenly, the door to the room smashed open and a big chunk of it flew across the room and knocked Bracken straight in the head causing him to lose consciousness and pin both him and Kendra inside the Barrel. Bracken lost hold of Warren and consequently Warren froze up about a metre from the Barrel, Kendra tried to reach him but couldnât because of Bracken sprawled out on top of her.
Then two men came through the door each glowing slightly dark blue. One man was easily identifiable as the Sphinx, but the other man Kendra had never seen before, he was beautiful and almost perfect looking, his nose was a bit crooked, but it suited his face. Kendra thought that his beauty even rivaled Brackenâs. They ran towards the group escaping, the Sphinx grabbed hold of Warren, who was still left paralyzed even after he touched him. The beautiful man ran towards Kendra and Bracken, clearly trying to apprehend them as well. Kendra heard a mighty dragon roar from above and a loud lightning strike, then felt big hand grab her and Bracken from the Barrel. Kendra screamed out.
The next thing she saw was the faces of everyone who had escaped standing over her and Bracken, they pulled Kendra and Bracken out of the Barrel; she was relieved they had made it out. But what about Warren? Were they going to kill him? Maybe just capture. Kendra felt her medallion teleport away, which she thought was odd because she hadnât sent it.
âItâs official, Wyrmoost has fallen. Kendra and I fled leaving weakness in our claims as caretakers, especially since we were both so recently appointed. Celebrant is now the sole Caretaker of Wyrmoost.â Agad acknowledged with sorrow laced between his words; his medallion also appeared to be gone.
Kendra couldnât believe what had happened, it all went down so fast. Her head flooded with overwhelming thoughts, one stuck out particularly though out of all of them. Where was Seth and what was his role in this?
Notes:
Sorry this is really short! I hope you guys like it. I don't really know what else to say. Tell me your thoughts, bye!
Society of the Evening Star CH06
Oberon and Seth find out what their mission is. They also find out what the artifact will be used for in the near future. Along the way they meet a few new allies. Hopefully everything goes according to plan, or else there will be a problem that can't be fixed.
Notes:
Hi guys!! Just so you know this fic takes place in like a 2007 ish timeline, no matter if multiple years go by, the available technology will stay the same.
Seth slowly opened his eyes to the blaring sun bleeding through the huts window. He didnât want to get up and start the day, though he was excited for the prospect of learning about him and Oberonâs mission to the outside world. Maybe he would be able to buy some new clothes or something, he thought about how he could get Oberon to try a bunch of new foods. Seth grew bored of his idle state, he needed something to occupy his brain.
âOberon... are you awake yet?â Seth whispered, he didnât want to wake him up if he wasnât yet awake.
âYep, Iâm usually a pretty early riser.â Oberon whispered back, Seth heard the creaking of the wood as Oberon moved around on his loft. Then Seth saw him crawl down the ladder onto the main floor of the hut.
âCome on Seth, Iâm bored. Letâs go get breakfast.â Oberon said as he grabbed Sethâs arm and began to drag him out of bed.
âOkay, okay. Letâs get dressed or whatever then head over to a restaurant or something.â Seth proposed. They both quickly got ready, brushing their teeth with miswak sticks, Seth borrowed some clothes from Oberon, and then they rushed out the door.
They went to exactly the same place and table as they had last time. The human themed restaurant served all sorts of foods 24/7 but Seth still wanted to get a morning styled food. So he ordered a large stack of chocolate pancakes. Oberon ordered a stack of buttermilk pancakes with a side of strawberry syrup to top it off.
Seth was glad he could see magical creatures without the milk now; he didnât have to rely on others to supply him with his fix of vision for the day. Though, he supposed he lost the benefits of not being able to see the magical creatures, which had saved him before. He argued the pros outweighed the cons though.
âI wonder what the mission is, Iâm really curious, and excited about it. I mean Iâve barely even been outside the sludgeholes, never mind Wyrmoost!â Oberon expressed, Seth was confused on how Oberon was even allowed to leave in the first place, being a citizen of Wyrmoost came with rules of where he was allowed to go, but maybe that's why Oberon was the one to come with him to Nachbidung von Schloss Lichenstein instead of Vatka, maybe he wasnât a permanent resident like Raxtus; but then how had he never left before? Seth was about to ask Oberon about his situation but seemingly by fate Vatka appeared at the entrance to the restaurant. She glanced around aimlessly before her eyes lasered in on Oberon and Seth. She calmy closed the distance between them.
âHello boys, you're just the people Iâm looking for.â She announced with a warm grin on her face.
âHi mom, is it a new mission?â Oberon questioned, he couldnât hide the eagerness laced between his words.
âYes, you two will go attend a Society of the Evening Star meeting, itâs urgent and all remaining members must attend.â She clarified.
âBut weâre not members.â Seth remarked.
âOf course, but the leaders of the organization have taken an interest in you two. Becoming members will be very beneficial to our cause. Being the Raden Corporeal is a high honour. As well as my son who is one of the very few remaining warlocks or witches not tied down to a reserve. Though hopefully for me that wonât be the case for very long.â She reported.
Seth was confused on what she meant, were they planning on trying to overthrow the treaties of Wyrmoost? Hopefully no one at Blackwell Keep would get injured in the process. He cared for them deeply despite their differing opinions. Maybe they were just planning on overthrowing the treaties within Wyrmoost and not the entirety of the preserve. Though, Seth doubted that.
âYou guys will be picked up by a Dragon at the edge of the sludgeholes territory in two hours, sorry for the short notice. I was just informed, it's hard to reach the outside world while being couped up in here.â She explained.
âOn a dragon! Are you crazy? What if it eats us!?â Oberon exclaimed. Seth shared his sentiment, the only dragon Seth trusted with his life was Raxtus. Even though Raxtus was on the dragonâs side of the war this time around, he was unsure if they would trust him with the task of delivering the two boys near the border. Though, Seth thought riding an actually big and scary dragon would be pretty cool, no offense to Raxtus.
âDonât worry, the dragon is on explicit orders from Celebrant himself to safely deliver you two where you need to go. Youâll be picked up by a member of the society of the evening star outside of the gate. Also, if anyone says anything about the SOTES it's a code word for the society, so if someone asks you if you're there for the SOTES meeting say no and that you're there for something about the dawn, it doesnât have to be elaborate, you just need to make sure you say something about dawn specifically, doesnât matter if its dawn the time of day or Dawn like the Knights of the Dawn, theyâll get it either way. The SOTES questions are meant to weed out spies. Also, youâll need to leave in about an hour and a half to reach the meeting place on time, good luck.â She clarified a final time. She hugged Oberon and Seth waved goodbye before she speedwalked out of the restaurant, clearly, she was in some sort of rush, maybe she had information for other people as well. Seth could not believe what he had just heard. He looked over at Oberon, who was practically beaming with joy.
âLet's eat quickly and run back to my hut to pack! I canât wait to go shopping; Iâve always wanted to buy clothes and whatever else at the actual stores and not just the ones here.â Oberon gushed. Clearly, he was more excited about seeing the human world then the actual meeting. Also he had seemed to forget all about the dragon ride. Seth was way more curious about becoming a member of the Society of the Evening Star. When he was a Knight of the Dawn, he had vowed something about keeping peace or protecting light, but apperently Seth could not keep a promise for the life of him.
When their food arrived, they quickly scarfed it down, but they still had only an hour until they would have to meet the mysterious and looming image of a dragon, so they hurried on back to Oberonâs hut and got to packing. They packed a backpack each of clothes that would last them a few days, those weird organic toothbrushes that they had used in the morning, and whatever else they thought they needed. Seth hoped that they would be supplied with a credit card or some sort of money, or else this trip would be rather dull. It took them about an hour, which was mighty convenient considering that had exactly thirty minutes to get to a place thirty minutes away. It left no time for dilly dallying. Vatka emphasized the importance of not being late, so they did not dare make the dragon wait. They started their way down to the actual ground level. Once they were all the way down the winding staircase, they left the same way Seth and Riven had come through in the first place and filled their boring walk with talk about what they believed the meeting was about, and theories about future missions after they had become members. Seth relayed his worry about his family getting hurt, and Oberon said they would bring it up as a concern if it was mentioned at the meeting.
They finally reached the edge of the forest and barely took a step before a dragon swooped down right in front of them. The dragon was long with a body like a snake, but the face was a cross between a regular dragon and an eel. Itâs legs and wings were short but looked powerful with sharp spikes protruding from its back and tips of its wings. Itâs talons also looked particularly sharp as well. The dragon was mostly a turquoise colour but had orange spread out along it, and its underbelly was a peachy colour. Seth had heard about water dragons before but had never seen one in real life. Though, he was confused on why a water dragon would have wings. Maybe it was just water themed but was a regular dragon. Seth noticed he didnât freeze up like he normally did in front of dragons; it was probably choosing not to produce an excessive amount of dragon fear.
âHello, I am the one who Celebrant chose to deliver you to your destination. I am Sylthira Morgana, daughter of Vritra the Enveloper.â The dragon spoke plainly and clearly. Her voice sounded like a bunch of confident teenage girls speaking in unison.
âUh, Hi?â Seth awkwardly sputtered out. He hadnât thought of the awkwardness of speaking with a dragon.
âAre you a water dragon? Why do you have wings?â Seth asked after he had gained some much-needed confidence, he thought that asking a question would be a good way to lighten the mood. After all, she was going to be transporting them, and he didnât plan on becoming dragon food.
âMy father was a water dragon, and my mother was a regular dragon. I am a rare case where I developed features from both species.â
âWhatâs your breath weapon? Do you have one?â Oberon asked politely. Seth was surprised he had the courage to talk to her, perhaps he had talked to a dragon before.
âI have two breath weapons; I can control water and create lightning.â She responded calmy. Seth was surprised she had the patience to answer all their questions. Although, they only had a few.
âWe should get going now, weâre barely on time as it is, and your next ride is much more time sensitive.â
âOkay, so how do you want us to-â Oberon was asking before he got cut off by Sylthira scooping them up in her claws and flying up and off in the direction of Blackwell Keep. Apperently Seth was right in thinking that their mission was very time sensitive. He was disappointed that he didnât get the chance to ask Vatka to temporarily wear one of their teleporting bracelets so they could get back to Wyrmoost easier, but he supposed he really did have no time, also he could spend more time out of Wyrmoost that way so he supposed it wasnât all that bad.
Sylthira swerved to the left early before they got the chance to lay eyes on Blackwell Keep, Seth was glad he didnât have to face that place so soon after his unexpected betrayal. Seth spotted Wyrmoostâs protectionary wall as they soared closer and closer towards it, Seth was surprised that Sylthira hadnât dropped them off on the ground yet since she couldnât fly over the boundary. Past the wall Seth could see a helicopter hanging in the air with a net protruding from the bottom of it. What was the point of waiting in the air for them if they were going to pick them up on the ground anyways? Sylthira pulled her long tail up close to Seth and Oberon and wrapped them around in it. They now felt like a smushed kite being flown behind a massive Giant. Being held this tightly against another person was not very comfortable according to Seth.
Sylthira didnât slow down at all as they got even closer to the wall. Seth finally realized how Sylthira planned for them to board the helicopter. Before he got the chance to protest, Sylthira winded her tail up far behind her, and then flung them forwards.
Seth and Oberon sailed through the air so fast it was hard to process. They screamed in terror all the way until they crashed into the net connected to the helicopter. Sylthira turned around and flew back towards the sludgeholes, and then Seth felt the net being pulled upwards.
When the net was brought fully into the helicopter, Seth finally got a better look at their âdesignated driversâ. The pilots in the cockpit were introduced as Layla and Conner; they seemed to be a very in love couple. The ones who actually helped them up were identical twins named Jackson and Jason, the squad all seemed to be a similar age of mid too late twenties. Jason and Jackson were laughing super hard at Oberon and Sethâs entrance. Jackson looked like he had a sudden realization and then cleared his throat before asking the question Seth was just prepared for in a very suspicious tone.
âSo... you here for the SOTES meeting?â He asked, even if Seth didnât know what he was supposed to say he probably could have guessed not to say yes to that.
âNope, weâre here to watch the Dawn rise once again.â Seth quipped smoothly, a bit of a smirk radiating off his face.
âThat was the worst and most suspicious way you could have asked that.â Jason said as he shoved Jackson over.
âWhatever, they know what the code phrase was, so it doesnât matter.â Jackson chimed.
They argued for a minute before Oberon budged in and asked a few questions. They answered all of his questions quickly and accurately. Seth was glad their concerns werenât all up in the air, literally.
The helicopter would deliver them near a hotel in Ciudad JuĂĄrez where theyâll spend the night. At noon the next day they will take a pre-planned ride to an address theyâll be provided in a folder as well as an unlimited credit card for their expenses and fake documents in case they get questioned for some unknown reason. All six of them will gather before they enter the meeting place so that they can help Oberon and Seth become members and give pointers where needed. After the meeting theyâll wait at the hotel for Jackson and Jason to come collect them, then theyâll head back to Wyrmoost the same way they came. Seth hoped they didnât have to do another lethal stunt to get back inside the boundaries of the preserve.
Oberon and Seth got settled in and sat bored for a bit before everyone joined in on some games like I spy, which was hard because they kept on flying past things. After they got bored of that they strapped themselves into their seats and took a power nap, their flight was long, but they underestimated how tired they would be.
Seth was awoken to someone shaking his shoulder aggressively.
âSeth.â He heard someone say playfully from above. He opened his eyes to the sight of Oberon leaning over him. Oberon took a step back and allowed Seth to get unbuckled from his seat and put his backpack back on. Everyone but those two had already disembarked from the helicopter and were now waiting for them on the ground. Seth stepped down onto the grass into the blistering heat, luckily, they were under the cover of shade from a looming rock structure. He took in his surroundings; they were practically in the middle of nowhere, there were no visible signs of civilization in any direction. Until Seth saw a pitch-black limo speeding towards them, coming over a small hill. The limo slammed on the breaks in front of them, and then the doors swung wide open to display the lavish interior. They all piled in to the back, except for Connor who swapped seats with the driver while the driver positioned herself in the passenger seat. The driver was a beautiful girl with long and thick dreadlocks that seemed to be covered in gold decorations, she looked to be a similar age as Oberon and Seth. The girl spoke to Connor in a hushed tone, her Ivorienne accent peeking through.
âYouâre driving us to the SOTES meeting right?â The girl asked with polished charm, apperently being a lot more natural at acting nonchalant then Jackson.
âNope, just here to watch the rise of dawn.â He replied with a sly grin on his face. They stared at each other for a moment before they laughed and took a tight embrace.
âIâm glad I finally get to see you guys after our last joint mission! How are you guys doing?â The girl questioned.
âMe and Layla are great; Jackson and Jason are brutal as ever.â Connor swiftly replied while eyeing the twins in the back. The girl laughed at his answer, clearly, they were all acquainted with each other, which made Oberon and Seth the odd ones out. Connor started the car shortly after, they drove through the basically barren landscape, while listening to the five others joke around with each other. From their conversation he picked up that she was also a member of the Society of the Evening Star, and that her name was Diatah. Seth was surprised someone as young as him and Oberon was a member, maybe it was more common than he thought.
After what felt like another never-ending ride, they finally spotted signs of civilization. Houses, stores and people littered the streets. The limo garnered a lot of pedestrians' attention which was worrisome to Seth, werenât they supposed to be stealthy to some degree? The limo pulled into a drop-off zone of a fancy looking hotel, seeming to be made mostly of marble with a stone fountain as well. Layla handed them a folder, which they were briefed on the contents of earlier, but apperently there was more to it.
âYou guys will be staying at this hotel, all of us are split between three hotels to keep prying eyes away, not that theyâll be looking, weâre just being cautious. Donât talk to the people at the front desk, there's already two key cards in the folder with your room number as well, so avoid talking to any staff of the hotel in general. There is a piece of paper with all your instructions for tomorrow so read that in the privacy of your room, you may go out to buy food or anything else but donât draw too much attention to yourselves and make sure to give fake names and only use the credit card to pay for stuff, got it?â Layla asked them, she sounded more serious than she had a few moments prior.
âYep.â Oberon and Seth answered in unison. Before they knew it, they were standing in front of the hotel with their backpacks and folder, with the limo disappearing behind them in the horizon. It was odd, they had just met those people and now they were all alone again, well except of course for the fact they had each other.
Seth and Oberon walked into the hotel, and tried to act as non-suspicious as possible, though they werenât very good at it, they looked like they were trying to covertly rob the place, but luckily for them no one was at the front desk so they snuck by to the elevators pretty easily. The room number was 90881 so they assumed it was on the ninth floor and pressed the designated button. They exited the elevator on the ninth floor and went searching down the right side of the hallway before realizing all the uneven rooms were to the left, so they had to go all the way back again and then even farther to finally find their room. They tiredly swiped open the door, and then marveled at the beautiful room, it had two master bedrooms with king sized beds, and their own bathrooms with a bathtub and a shower each. The living room was spacious with a large Plasma TV and an expensive feeling couch. The balcony was even crazier with a large hot tub built into it. There was also a fancy kitchen, but they didnât really care about that.
âDude, this is the best hotel room I think Iâve ever seen.â Seth said, mouth agape.
âI mean Iâve never even been to a hotel, but Iâve only ever seen such luxury in magazines. I thought only super rich people could live like this.â Oberon muttered, clearly star struck at the sheer amount of wealth needed to purchase this room. Seth had forgotten that Oberon had never even been outside Wyrmoost before and likely didnât know anything outside of outdated magazines and books that they sold at the markets in his village. This was probably super overwhelming to him, but he seemed excited and not anxious so that was good for Seth, he had never been very helpful when people were anxious. He also probably didnât have a good concept of currency other than gold or silver, but that didnât really matter in the moment. Seth decided they were going to live like royalty for the day.
They threw their bags somewhere on the coach and decided to finally open the folder. In the folder they found, fake birth certificates, passports, IDâs saying theyâre over 21 which Seth found it would be hard for other people to believe. Another perceived issue was that their IDâs said that they were brothers. Daniel and Darrel Patel, this was probably the least believable thing they could have had on their IDâs; Jackson was probably the one who made them without considering that they could have differing skin colours, what an idiot.
Another paper provided them with solid stories on their fabricated lives. They were quite obviously adopted brothers by the billionaire David Patel, who was nearing his hundredth birthday. That was what probably funded their lavish hotel room. Seth hoped people would believe that they were the adopted sons of a century old billionaire, or else they would get in pretty big trouble for identity fraud, Seth didnât want to disappoint his family even further by going to prison, well a non-magical one at least. They had tried to put him in a dungeon the last time he saw them so maybe they would enjoy the prospect of Seth being behind bars. The instructional paper also said the limitless credit card was in the name of David Patel so they could use it on whatever else they desired. Oberon and Seth decided they wanted to go shopping for new clothes and any other trinkets they took interest in.
They pocketed their fake IDâs and unlimited credit card and sauntered out of their shared hotel room. Oberon decided to take the elevator down to lobby but Seth jumped out at the last minute and ran towards the stairs.
âLast one down is a rotten egg!â He yelled out as he sprinted down the hallway, finding the emergency staircase and practically flying his way down. Seth reached the main floor sweating and breathing heavily Oberon waited for him on a plush couch in the lobby, guess he had lost some preious time when trying to locate the emergency staircase.
âGuess you're the rotten egg.â Oberon stated with a laugh. They had apperently given up the attempt of being stealthy, though acting weird and secluded is probably more suspicious than acting like normal teenagers.
They needed to map their way around the city if they wanted to make their way to a store and back, so they found the communal computers and searched up âStores near meâ. The nearest and biggest store near them was an extravagant mall that was only about a block away.
Oberon and Seth left the hotel and walked down the street to the right and crossed. Oberon glanced around everywhere, seeming to be encapsulated by the things Seth deemed boring or regular. During their walk they saw many other locals or tourists heading in the direction of the mall, perhaps it was going to be busy, it wasnât that late yet after all.
As soon as they laid eyes on the mall Oberon let out a dramatic gasp.
âThis place is huge! I donât think Iâve seen anything man-made this big! Also, how can they those signs glow without magic?â Oberon asked.
âWait until you get inside, youâll be extra shocked. Electricity is what makes those signs glow. Even the hotel we were in uses electricity.â Seth explained, trying to make it sound simple.
âOh, I hadnât noticed any glowing signs in the hotel or on our way over here. Can electricity be used for other things?â
âYah, itâs used in pretty much everything nowadays to give it power.â
âPower? Like strength? Iâm confused.â
Seth didnât really take into account that Oberon wouldnât understand power in the context of electricity.
âElectricity is basically magicless magic. It can make things turn on, like lights, signs, or appliances. I honestly donât really know how to explain it.â Seth admitted.
âThat's fine, not knowing how it works will make it seem cooler to me. More mysterious, you know?â
Oberon and Seth reached the entrance of the large shopping centre, Oberon asked about the sliding doors, and he asked about the elevators, the escalators, lights, speakers pretty much everything in sight; Seth couldnât explain a single thing to him, Oberonâs questions were making him realize how he didnât actually know anything about how things worked, not a great feeling.
They entered a dark looking store with clothing that Seth had seen previously in some emo magazines, not that he had looked through them or anything. Though, Seth had to admit the clothing there was pretty cool. Oberon seemed to pick out a million things, jean shorts, polos, belts with spikes and rhinestones, shoes. Oberon also picked out a lot of clothes for Seth to try on as well, those his options looked less extreme.
Oberon dragged him over to the dressing rooms where they seemingly tried on a million pieces of clothing, the shopping attendants brought over some recommendations for them which only added fuel to Oberonâs fire.
At the end of their shopping spree, Oberon and Seth each had four new pairs of dark coloured or black jean shorts, eight polos and or T-shirts, two bedazzled belts, and they both bought matching black adventurer boots, though they probably werenât made for running around on a secret preserve full of dragons. Their newly acquired shopping bags were heavy, and Seth didnât even want to think of how much money they had just spent. How were they going to take this back to Wyrmoost?
They walked further into the mall where Seth and Oberon spotted a piercing shop, though Seth had talked him out of that for the moment.
They saw an arcade which Seth dragged an overwhelmed Oberon into, he taught him all what he knew about how the games worked and tried to teach him to play, Oberon was probably the worst person Seth had ever seen play video games. After about an hour of playing Oberon asked to leave and then they continued their expedition through the mall, they went up to every floor and skimmed the contents of every store they went by, one that caught Sethâs and Oberonâs eye was a jewelry store.
They walked in and immediately a sales associate bolted over to them.
âHello gentlemen, are you guys looking for anything specific?â
âNo, weâre just looking.â Seth said courtly, he hated how sales associates always hovered over him when he went shopping.
They went around the store and looked in the little locked off boxes of jewelry, they seemed to be rather expensive, but that wasnât important because Seth and Oberon were living on another person's dime, or in other words Darrel and Daniel Patel were using their billionaire dadâs credit card to go on an expensive shopping spree.
After a few minutes of gawking Oberon pointed out two bangle type bracelets that seemed to be able to cover up half of the surface area of someone's forearm. They were made of tungsten with intricate patterns creating a beautiful design, in the middle of the design was an absolutely massive gemstone. The sales associate that was breathing down their necks informed them that the gemstone was alexandrite, which is colour changing, famously referred to as emerald by day, ruby by night. Oberon leaned closer to him.
âWith a stone that big, I can inlay some magic into it, and it will be the perfect vessel for protection, fear resistance, or power amplification.â Oberon excitedly explained. Seth already liked their designs, but they could also have real benefits as well, and a good bonus was that they didnât have to pay for it themselves.
âHow much are they? Seth inquired.
âTheyâll be about $56â000 American dollars each sir.â The sales associate said. Sethâs stomach dropped. He had no idea they would cost that much! Then he remembered his unlimited credit card and realized that on that day they didnât see him as Seth Sorenson the moneyless fifteen-year-old, but Daniel Patel the twenty-two-year-old nepo baby.
âShould we get them?â Seth whispered to Oberon.
âI donât see why not... They have real advantages, and also, they just look cool.â Oberon whispered back, a slight smile appearing on his face. Seth didnât think Oberon understood how much money $56â000 dollars is, but that was all the conformation he needed to make this dumb decision.
âWeâll take them both.â
The sales associate brought the two bracelets over to where they could pay and rang the two daunting prices up. Seth didnât even bother looking at the final price, he knew it would be well over $110â000 American dollars without even taking tax into the equation, though he wondered what the conversion rate to pesos was like, maybe it wasnât so bad. Seth slid the credit card through the reader and waited for it to go through; he found himself wondering what would happen if the credit card declined, and how embarrassing that would be.
Luckily for him the transaction went through. The sales associate showed them both how to put on the bracelets, because the sheer size of them made them difficult to dawn without clear instructions. Seth decided to put it on his left arm and Oberon decided to put his on his right arm, the bracelets were quite heavy. Then they left the store, barely regretting the complete waste of money they had just gone through with.
After that idiotic purchase they decided to head back to the hotel room and order room service instead of going to the food court. On their walk home they struggled with their multiple bags each and walked a bit slower then intended, luckily the day was much later by then, so the sun wasnât as daring. They reached the hotel only slightly covered in sweat.
This time someone appeared to be working at the front desk, so they did their best to avoid unwanted conversation, but unluckily for them, the guy working the front desk was chatty.
âHey, boys. Where are your parents? itâs a little late to be out by yourselves.â He questioned suspiciously.
âOh, theyâre in our room, we just had to get our shopping bags from the car.â Seth lied, they inched closer and closer to the elevator.
âOk, whatâs your room number?â He asked, clearly not buying his lie, Seth should have thought that out more. The guyâs shift probably hadnât just started so he would have seen Oberon and Seth come down for the bags before they came back in.
â90881â Seth replied, finally they reached the elevator and quickly punched the ninth-floor button to get out of that painful interaction. They sighed as the elevator slowly ascended its way up to their floor. The doors dinged then swung open, where they waddled over to their room, and struggled to open the door with their shopping bags. When they got in, they threw their bags onto the floor, took of their shoes, and then flopped onto the couch.
âWe should probably get showered first or whatever, I donât want to eat all sweaty.â Oberon admitted flatly.
âYah, I feel gross.â
The phone rang. Seth got up and answered.
âHello? Who is this?â
âHello, is this Mr. Patel?â
Seth panicked, it was the nosy guy from downstairs calling to make sure they werenât alone in their hotel room. Why couldnât he just mind his own business? Seth looked over at Oberon who seemed to be holding in a laugh, of course he found it funny, he wasnât the one needing to lie out of his ass!
âUh, yes this is he. What are you calling about?â Seth said in the deepest voice he could muster.
âOh, uh nothing to worry about. I was just checking to make sure your sons werenât alone by themselves in their hotel room.â
âWhy that is just ridiculous! My sons are both of adult age and I expect you to treat them like it!â
âOh, sorry sir, itâs just that they both look much younger, and frankly they donât really look like brothers...â
âYou think I care what they look like? Go to hell!â Seth announced as he slammed the phone down as hard as he could. He and Oberon burst out laughing. Hopefully the hotel wouldnât try to do anything further about the situation, or else they might get into actual trouble. After they both calmed down Seth laid back on the couch and Oberon left to his room to shower. Seth took the moment to admire his jewelry. In the span of two days, he had gained three pieces of exquisite jewelry, a ring on his right middle finger that was really a weapon of whatever he chose, a bracelet on his right wrist that could teleport him to anyone else wearing one of the other four bracelets, and his half-forearm-long bangle on his left arm that was soon to be inlayed with magic of some sort.
Seth grew tired of laying around while being dirty, so he left the couch for his room and got ready for his fancy shower in his fancy bathroom. He laid out a worn-out T-shirt and shorts he had stollen from Oberon when they were packing and placed them on his bed, usually he wasnât the type to get all organized before a shower but he didnât want to get the rest of his clothes wet while looking for them. He also removed all his jewelry, he didnât know if they were waterproof and he didnât want to take the risk, they were all so valuable. Maybe there was some sort of spell to make things waterproof or at least water resistant, he would ask Oberon when the time arrived. He quickly got undressed and threw all his dirty clothes in the corner, now that was what he didnât care about.
He entered the bathroom and figured out how to turn on the hot water before getting in. The hot water did wonders for his aching body and he felt truly relaxed for the first time in a while; in the shower he peered down at his tattoo. Was he the only one who could see it? Could Oberon see it and had just not said anything? The first time Oberon had ever laid eyes on Seth was after he had gained the tattoo so maybe he hadnât noticed it as an anomaly. Maybe allies of the night could see it but regular or âlightâ people couldnât, he decided to ask Oberon after he finished showering. He quickly washed his hair and body with the hotel provided soaps and then got out of the shower and made sure to turn it off behind him. It was a habit now because of that one time when he was ten, he had forgotten to turn off the water and it ran all night, his parents werenât too happy with him after that.
Seth toweled off, rushing because he was beginning to get cold from being outside of the warm water but also not wearing any clothes. He dawned his makeshift pajamas and walked into the living room, where he saw Oberon lounging on the coach, his long hair was soaking wet and sat lazily across his shoulders, causing his shirt to hold a considerable amount of water.
âHey Seth. Iâm starting to get hungry; we should have gotten something at the mall.â He said with a hand on his empty stomach.
âDonât worry, weâll order room service.â Seth said as he strolled over to the phone. He dialed the number, which was supplied on a sticker below the numbers.
âHello, this is room service. What can we get for you?â
âUh, Iâll get two large cheese pizzas, and...â
âOberon do you want dessert?â Seth asked, craning his neck to look at Oberon directly.
âOh, um... I donât know! Just get me something.â He said panickily, Seth had forgotten how inept Oberon was with certain services.
âIâll also get two chocolate milkshakes. Just charge it to the room, Itâs 90881.â
âOkay, the food will be delivered to your room when its ready.â
âOkay, thank you.â Seth said as he hung up the phone.
âSo, is room service is like a restaurant but in your room?â Oberon asked.
âI guess you could put it like that.â
A pause rang out for a moment.
âActually, thatâs pretty much exactly what it is.â
âAlso, I want to ask you something.â Seth said as he held out his right forearm towards Oberon
âCan you see the tattoo?â
âThe big one spelling out Raden Corporeal?â
âSo you can see it?â
âI guess, Can other people not?â
âI donât think so.â
They talked about different things until their food arrived. Oberon asked questions about functionality of certain things, Seth answered to the best of his ability. Seth heard a knock on the door and went and retrieved the food, wheeling it in on the provided cart. They chowed down relentlessly on their food, the pizzas where amazing and cheese seemed to be a good idea because Oberon was hammering them down.
They finished their food and they came to the unanimous decision to head straight to bed. Seth laid in his dark room, basking in the comfort of an actual high-quality bed. He was nervous for the meeting the next day, what if they didnât accept him? In truthfulness he had helped defeat the Society of the Evening Star during their attempt of freeing the demons from Zzyzx and had recently become and then retired from the post of a caretaker of Wyrmoost. He had even killed a few of their key members! Causing a severe blow to their forces. Seth played different scenarios of the meeting over and over again in his head, maybe they would kill him like a traitor, maybe they would accept him as their own, maybe they wouldnât care at all, maybe they would throw him in a dungeon, Seth guessed he couldnât really postpone the inevitable, maybe he was destined to rot away in a cold cell, with the rest of the undead because the locks in a regular dungeon wouldnât be enough. Before he knew it, he slowly drifted to sleep.
Seth sprinted through the dense and dark trees in the Revenantâs Grove. Bracken and Kendra ran quickly behind him. Seth looked back to locate his pursuers, luckily for him they had fallen behind, and were nowhere in his field of vision. Seth tripped and fell onto the Revenants nail and felt the withering commence, turning into the revenant himself. He watched himself turn into a pale almost dead looking old man. He spotted Warren frozen in front of him and slowly crept towards him, there was nothing Seth could do to stop himself; he had no control of his body. He saw himself close his clammy hands around Warrenâs neck and watched the withering spread. Kendra and Bracken caught up, and Kendra shrieked louder than Seth knew was possible. He looked back at Warren; with his last breath he said to Seth...
âLook what youâve done to us Seth, this is the consequences of your actions. This is what you become.â
Then he heard running behind him and felt the most painful burning sensation Seth could ever imagine go through his neck. He had been decapitated. His head rolled facing towards his executioner, Bracken looked down on him.
âSeth, Iâm sorry I couldnât save you.â He said with pity across his face.
Seth rose dramatically, breathing deep when he could and gasping for air. He checked his head, it was still connected to his body, he breathed a sigh of relief, it was just a nightmare.
Seth checked the bedside alarm clock. It read 11:00am.
âItâs already eleven!â Seth said to himself, he jumped out of bed and ran to Oberonâs room. He shook him awake, relaying the time to him. He also sprung out of bed. They ran around the hotel room getting dressed, Seth chose on of his new T-shirts, it was dark brown with a cool grey skull design on it, and he chose some black jean shorts as well as his new black adventurer boots, also making sure to put on all his jewelry, two out of the three could actually help him out. He met Oberon in the living room who was wearing a red T-shirt with a dark red rose design going across it, some dark blue jean shorts, and the matching adventurer boots, as well as his two bracelets. Seth made sure to grab his emergency satchel in case they would need it on their journey, though he doubted he would need it.
It was now 11:20am, they needed to get organized and figure out what the plan was. They reached for the folder and looked for the instructions. The paper read:
At the pick-up area at the front of the hotel a driver in a black convertible will be waiting for you. Give them the secret phrase when prompted.
When getting out of the vehicle await the arrival of Jackson, Jason, Connor, and Laya
Note: hahaha! I wrote my name first!
We will help you with everything that needs to be done, then weâll take you back to Wyro s the Sludgeholes
Seth wasnât surprised at Jacksonâs immaturity, when he had met him before he had acted quite childish. Seth wondered why he had tried to erase the word Wyrmoost, guess he would find out.
Seth and Oberon decided to go down to the lobby and grab a quick breakfast before they left. They both got crĂȘpes and Oberon was quite surprised that they were mostly different then pancakes.
By the time they were finished it was 11:56am and they decided to go outside and wait for the car to pick them up. At 12:01pm a black convertible showed up, and they hopped in the back, the woman driving it asked them the same old trick question which they smoothly answered. Then the car sped off. Oberon wondered out loud why they chose a convertible since that was quite conspicuous, but the woman didnât bother to answer.
During the long drive their Seth took the time to think about his nightmare, was he always going to be plagued by these thoughts? He hoped he could get over his self-ran debate in his mind and fully embrace what he knew was right. Maybe the dream was just random, or maybe it was a vision into Sethâs future, he didnât think he could see the future though. Maybe it was a look into Sethâs biggest fears.
After an hour of driving, they reached a large estate surrounded by a metal fence, on the gate was the initials DP, they could easily guess who this estate belonged to. The gate swung open and they continued down the dirt road towards the looming manor. When they reached the front, they hopped and were quickly joined by the squad that had aided them in arriving in Mexico in the first place. Seth felt nervous but followed the others into the large doors. He wondered what he would discover, and how he would be recieved.
~ ~ ~ After the Meeting ~ ~ ~
Seth went into that meeting as a welcomed guest and left an honoured member of the Society of the Evening Star. He was relieved that his familyâs lives werenât in danger. Though he wondered, how were the Sphinx, Ronodin, Diatah, and Sylthira going to pull it off? The amount of planning that had gone into it was insane, even Oberon and Seth had played a part in it without knowing, though Seth had some doubts, what if something went wrong?

A Welcomed Distraction CH05
Seth takes on a much needed distraction. He needed a way to push the thoughts of his family away, and now he thinks he has found it.
Seth stirred, his back hurt from his bad sleeping condition, he had forgotten how horrible it was to sleep on a couch instead of the fancy bed he had at Blackwell Keep. Last night he had been discovered by his family as a traitor and then they attempted to apprehend him in the comfort of his own bedroom. He managed to teleport away to Oberonâs hut with the contents of his emergency kit but was lacking all his other possessions he had left in his room during his expedition; which was what caused him to be caught in the first place. He hoped it was worth it, he hadnât really bothered to ask BuschgroĂmutter what she was planning on doing with the artifact, which might have been a bad decision on Sethâs part.
âSeth? Are you awake yet?â He heard someone say from above. It finally dawned on Seth what had transpired last night, he felt devastated and conflicted. He didnât want to be estranged from his family but knew he couldnât lie to himself anymore. What he had felt and done had seemed so sudden but was catalysed by two years of reflection after the attempted liberation of the demons. Seth still didnât know if the Sphinx was fully right about the demons but knew he could see his perspective and would have likely come to the same conclusion if he was the Sphinx. Once being a slave must have given him a perspective that others could not achieve. Bracken, Kendra, Stan and even him had never been enslaved by people at preserves, but the Sphinx had, which made him more qualified than anyone else in that respect.
Seth supposed he felt peace in his choice to flee instead of taking on the consequences the Fairy kingdom thought he deserved. Who are they to decide what is wrong and right? Is everything really that black and white? He would fight on the side of the dragons, and maybe after this war he could find a way to reconcile with Kendra and the rest of his family, except maybe Bracken. He didnât seem like the type of guy to forgive and forget so easily. Especially because the only reason he was so close with his family was because of Kendra. Even Sethâs own family didnât fully trust him as much as they trusted Kendra, because she was favoured by the light, so he could imagine what Bracken felt towards him. Obviously, Seth could tell Bracken liked Seth as a person but due to his unicorn status, he probably felt a level of distrust towards him like he did for Vanessa, which he actually went out of his way to embarrass during their time at the beach. Seth lost a little bit of respect for him when he did that, wasnât he like thousands of years old? That specific action didnât showcase a lot of maturity, and made Seth feel like people didnât really believe dark creatures could be âgoodâ. In their opinion, everyone but them and their friends were just seen as evil in the eyes of the light.
Seth found himself thinking about his parents, what was Grandpa going to tell them? That he was now evil and was an enemy meant to be taken into custody? Maybe theyâll just tell them he died because they have no role in the war and just newly aware of magical beings in their entirety. He honestly hoped for the second option. He could feel the potential disappointment and sadness that his parents would feel if they found out he betrayed the interests of all that is âgoodâ in the world. Seth didnât think he could handle this much disapproval, maybe he should find a way to get his mind off of things.
âSeth did you hear me?â Oberon asked as he was climbing down the rickety ladder leading up to his loft.
âOh no sorry. I zoned out.â
âMaybe we should go get some food or something, get you accustomed to life in the village.â Oberon suggested. Last night when Seth had appeared in Oberonâs hut, he had explained. Through his tears and short breaths what had happened. Oberon helped Seth to the couch and gave him a pillow and a blanket to sleep on, he said he could live with him in his hut for as long as he wanted, which was a comforting thought to Seth, having someone who had his back was good for him and gave him relief that he wouldnât have to run and hide from Wyrmoost and Dragonwatch while attempting to get through his persisting sadness.
âYah, that sounds like a good idea, Iâm pretty hungry right now.â Seth admitted.
âPerfect! You can use whatever you need to get ready before we go, I have enough clothes to share since I know you donât have any right now. Iâll wait for you outside; I like to stretch in the morning.â
âK, thank you.â Seth said as he watched Oberon walk out the door. He looked around in Oberonâs closet, finding a pair of cargo shorts, and a black t-shirt to wear. He decided to keep the same shoes and socks on because wearing another personâs socks and shoes seems weird, especially if you just met them. Though, Seth felt a friendship developing fast between him and Oberon, he hadnât had a friend near his age that wasnât related to him in a while. Seth got dressed and threw his dirty shirt and shorts onto his makeshift bed, then exited the hut and looked around for Oberon. The sun was slightly filtering through the heavy branches and leaves, creating a perfectly cool environment. Seth appreciated the design of the village; it was beautiful day and night and seemed to foster creatures acclimated to any preferred sleep schedule.
Oberon was stretching about a metre in front of Seth, overlooking the rest of the village on his hutâs platform.
âOh, hey Seth! Come stretch with me. Itâll help with your soreness from last night.â
Seth supposed it would be helpful to stretch out his aching body. He felt sore from being flung around yesterday, also his awkward landing when jumping through that window wasnât very helpful either. Seth walked up next to Oberon and began to copy his stretching positions; the moves they did seem to sooth Sethâs back pain.
âWe should go and get breakfast now; most people and creatures here operate on a nocturnal schedule so it shouldnât be busy.â He explained. Seth quietly agreed but was unaware if he said it out loud or not. Oberon grabbed his packed bag that Seth hadnât seen him grab earlier and started his way onto the platform that connected this neighbourhood of huts and then in new direction Seth hadnât been yet. Seth followed him in a daze, his thoughts flipped between different subjects, his family, their destination, his new powers, what BuschgroĂmutter was planning on doing with the artifact. Seth looked up at the sun bleeding through the leaves and realized they were probably getting an extremely late breakfast, the sunâs position hinted that it was likely past lunch time. They climbed a new set of stairs winding around a tall trunk up to a large platform, they climbed up past three levels of all sorts of establishments. Seth could see huts, huts that seemed much larger than the one him and Oberon occupied, markets, workshops, restaurants, sport courts like basketball, tennis, and badminton, and lots of taverns strung out between multiple floors of the village that spanned kilometres and went upwards for a multitude of floors, making it quite large for a village. Seth saw a few day accustomed folks walking around a few goblins, trolls, other people, other creatures Seth could identify, and some he could not. Something he noticed about them was that they all seemed quite friendly towards one another, despite the fact that they were all different species.
Seth marveled at the unity shown between the magical creatures, then realized he hadnât drunk any milk that day. Actually, Seth didnât think he had drunken any for at least a day or two. How could he see the creatures? Maybe his powers were like Kendraâs? Perhaps now he also had the power to see magical creatures without help.
Sethâs legs ached from all the climbing. Oberonâs hut wasnât even on one of the lower levels, and they had only climbed a few floors up, yet he was completely out of breath. He really needed to get his cardio up.
Oberon finally stopped climbing and started across the connecting pathways and platforms on the sixth floor, which was three above Oberonâs hut. They came across an open style restaurant with a large deck area overlooking the floors above and below it.
âI chose this restaurant because it's probably closer to something your used to, itâs run by witches and warlocks that lived in the outside world before they came here, so all the food here is made from the same ingredients that they grow and they make a bunch of different human suited foods, like hamburgers, pizza, and steak, as well as other stuff. They go out into the human world once every year to learn new recipes.â Oberon explained. The restaurant had many different signs and posters from different eras of pop culture, and they even had 70âs music playing in the background. A nice-looking middle-aged lady came out from the outdoor kitchen and seated them at a table next to the railing looking over the beautiful view. There were only two other tables of people, but they were on the other side of the restaurant, allowing Oberon and Seth to converse freely.
Seth looked over the menu, seeing many different foods that he recognized, and many new ones he could try. He wasnât in an overly adventurous mood that day, so he decided on a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake, he was surprised they even had anything chocolate related here. Maybe they grow cacao trees here. Oberon ordered a poutine, which Seth had heard about, apperently it was some sort of French-Canadian dish, but he wasnât entirely sure, perhaps he would try it one day. After they finished ordering their food the older lady walked away to the kitchen and began making their food, Seth found it interesting that there was a restaurant like the ones where he grew up. He felt a bit nostalgic; he couldnât even remember the last time he had been to a restaurant. He just remembered all the times he and Kendra had fought in them. What if Seth never got to see her again? Seth felt swarmed by his thoughts, they were overwhelming, he needed a distraction.
âI come to this restaurant a lot, I find the human world cool, even though I have never been before.â Oberon shyly admitted. After some time Seth responded.
âI guess it seems pretty cool for someone who has never seen it, Iâd argue that the magical world is way cooler though.â
âOh, really? We might get the chance to visit it soon. I heard my mom is going to visit BuschgroĂmutter today for a new mission for us, since there is an upcoming Society of the Evening Star meeting coming up soon.â Oberon explained. Seth perked up after hearing that, he was looking forward to the chance of leaving Wyrmoost for a bit, maybe heâll get to go out and buy some new clothes, the ones he had lost were a bit outdated anyways. Their orders arrived quickly, Sethâs cheeseburger looked just as delicious as he imagined it, and Oberonâs food looked pretty good as well, it was fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. They began to devour their food, luckily for the two of them, the portions were quite large.
âWanna try some? I promise it's amazing. My mom has made me some homemade stuff, but this is way better, donât tell her I said that though.â Oberon politely asked. Seth was a bit curious as to what it tasted like, he always enjoyed trying new foods, and he hadnât gotten the chance in a while. He only got to try new foods when the brownies decided to experiment.
âOkay, thanks.â Seth said. He took his unused fork from beside his plate and used it to pick up a fry covered in gravy and a cheese curd, to get the full flavour of the dish.
âWow! This tastes amazing!â Seth exclaimed, maybe his tastebuds werenât used to new flavours anymore but that tasted absolutely amazing to Seth.
âI know right? I love tasting new foods, I canât wait to finally go out into the world and try all sorts of different types!â Oberon excitedly replied. Seth was glad Oberon was similar to Seth in some ways, doing missions with a boring or annoying person would suck.
âCan I have a sip of your milkshake? I forgot to order a drink.â
âOh, yah of course.â Seth felt much better after this discussion, he always felt better after talking to a friend. They finished their meals and shared their drink until they were totally stuffed.
âHey, I have a fun idea! We should go to the pond, people here go swimming and diving into it for fun. Donât worry there's nothing dangerous residing inside. I brought two pairs of swimming shorts we can change into.â Oberon proposed.
âYah that sounds fun, let's get changed after we pay. Wait, do we have to pay?â Seth asked.
âNo, I make a lot of people potions in return for services or objects. Sheâll send me a letter when she needs something. Most people here use trade as a form of currency, though less permanent members of the village sometimes use gold or silver.â Oberon clarified.
âOh, sweet. How did you get swimming shorts if youâve never been outside Wyrmoost?â Seth inquired.
âSome people sell novelties from the human world, it's where I learned everything that I know about the human world.â
âOh, I guess that would make sense.â
Seth and Oberon went to the bathroom stalls carved into the tree and changed from their normal shorts into their swimming ones. Seth was glad they fit well. Oberon led the way down all six levels on the winding staircase. They walked in the same direction they had gone when they were trying to find the castle but branched off to the left randomly. Seth spotted a beautiful pond up ahead. It was turquoise in colour and circled around many of the tall trees. On their level, there was a ladder for climbing up and down, a rope swing, and a different diving boards at different levels for people to jump off. Each of these things was connected by rope bridges. Down below atop the water where it met the trunks of the trees sat wooden docks for people to rest on.
âWow, this place is beautiful. When you said pond, I imagined algae and frogs and whatever. This place looks like an oasis.â Seth remarked, he was glad it wasnât as gross as he thought it was going to be.
âItâs not a natural body of water. A warlock from a few centuries ago, they realized leaving the sludgeholes to swim in a lake was both inconvenient and dangerous. We have everything we need here; a lot of people havenât left for decades.â
âCool, I think we should go on the rope swing first, going from the platform on top of the water is for scaredy cats.â
âYah, youâre right.â
They both placed shoved their clothes inside Oberonâs bag and threw it against a trunk of a tree. They immediately ran over to the rope swing.
âWho should go first?â Seth asked.
âLet's go together, one of us can hold on higher and the other can be at the bottoms sitting on the knot of the rope.â Oberon suggested.
âYah, that sounds more fun.â
Oberon climbed up higher holding on tight to the rope, and Seth sat below him. They overlooked the course the rope swing would take them through. It would go between multiple trees before flinging them into the most open part of the pond, obviously designed that way to avoid injury by smacking into the trees.
â3...â
â2...â
â1!..â
They unhooked the long rope and flung fast through the air, the wind rushed against Sethâs face during their downward decent and upwards arc, he felt like he was flying. As the swing reached the peak of its journey they both untangled themselves from the rope and free-fell for 20 metres. Seth landed directly on his back, feeling the sting of the water as he went crashing deeper. Seth resurfaced and spotted Oberon surface to the left of him.
âDude, that hurt so bad.â
âI know right, I belly flopped and it hurt so bad, but still, it was pretty awesome.â
Seth and Oberon swam over to the floating platform and climbed up the ladder; Seth was glad it wasnât those stupidly designed ladders that start in the water so that they're covered in barnacles and slice your foot open.
They re-organized themselves on the rope swing, this time they decided to put Seth on top and Oberon on the knot, but this time they decided to swing upside, without holding on. They wrapped their legs on tight, making sure they didnât get flung right off the bat, and then set the rope free. They flew through the air once again, Seth only made it until the momentum of the swing reached its peak before slipping off, already being wet probably did not help. Oberon lasted up until the last second before he chose to let go and fall headfirst into the water.
They climbed that ladder what felt like hundreds of more times, racing each other across the pond, seeing who could hold their breath the longest, seeing who could do the craziest pose and not fall off. Seth had completely forgotten about all his current issues; he was having probably the best time of his life since before the end of the demon rebellion. He hadnât felt this alive in a while, his heart was racing, he was with a new friend, and he was following what he thought was right.
They swam until the moon fell upon them, which is when they decided to skip dinner and head straight to bed, Seth had forgotten how tiring swimming was. They laid across the deck in complete silence, waiting to air dry because they had forgotten to bring towels. The silence wasnât awkward though, it felt comfortable.
Once they were dry enough, they walked all the back to Oberonâs hut, and Oberon hopped into the shower. Seth was unsure why they had bothered to dry off just to shower when they got back, but he was too tired to question it. Once Oberon was done Seth went into the spacious bathroom and got in the warm water. He was surprised that the village had running or heated water. He assumed it was probably magic. The room was carved into the wide tree trunk, and was connected to Oberonâs hut through a door on one of the walls. The bathroom allowed for a toilet, sink plus vanity, bathtub and shower. Seth was glad the hut had a private bathroom and shower, he always hated those public showers at campsites, the hot water always ran out quickly.
Seth got out after getting sufficiently clean, and dried off with one of the extra towels, and then dawned the clean and fresh clothes Oberon had lent him. Seth left the bathroom and got back in his makeshift-bed. Oberon made sure to give him a better pillow and also gave Seth a fluffy blanket to put over the couch.
Seth thought of his family again, it was bittersweet. He didnât regret anything he had done but knew he was always going to be missing a large part of him. Hopefully he could find more friends, to support him and aid him in his journey of saving the dragons from his family.
Nachbildung von Schloss Lichtenstein CH04
Seth goes on some unexpected adventures, meets some new friends, and finds out what he must do on his secret mission.
Seth crept further into the spacious battlement, bewildered by what he saw and felt. It was nothing like he had ever seen before.
The doorway led into a gothic vestibule that was one of the most intricate and detailed spaces Seth had ever seen. It was way nicer than Blackwell Keep, and oddly well-kept for a place people didnât often visit. The furniture seemed antique and didnât appear to be made of any traditional wood; it had sort of an aura omitting from it that hinted otherwise. Seth couldnât believe that he hadnât been told about what was actually in this place! He had assumed it was abandoned and neglected or something which is why the tour guide hadnât taken them inside.; but apparently this place was better taken care of than the Keep. Seth stalked around in mild disbelief for a few minutes, taking in the extravagant detailing that gave it a gothic feel and made Seth feel comfortable and safe.
Seth walked into one of the connecting hallways and looked for an entrance to the courtyard, he had went there to read and that was what he decided to do in the moment, he could explore another day but he wanted to read all about Shadow charmers, the Society of the Evening Star, and the demons of Wyrmoost as soon as he could. He had to make sure he was knowledgeable on these subjects before he went on his daring adventure later that night. It took him about a minute of slow walking to see the open archway leading to the courtyard.
Once Seth entered the courtyard his jaw dropped from how beautiful it all was. There was a gazebo made of dark blue wood in the centre, and it was surrounded by beautifully mystic shrubbery that seemed to put off the same aura as the building itself. The courtyard was rectangular in shape and had many features off to either side of the gazebo including a small pond with a multitude of creatures like koi fish, extravagantly coloured frogs and other things inside it Seth could not identify. The courtyard also possessed brick paths leading to seating areas around the space, water fountains that seemed to infinitely circulating water, many medieval looking streetlamps to light it up when it got dark, and Plants like star jasmine, clematis, or bougainvillea lining the walls making it feel earthy and overgrown. Seth wanted to read in the courtyard in order to spend as much time as possible outside, so he scanned the area to find a seat that looked particularly comfy, for being outside at least. Off to the left of the gazebo, Seth spotted a gothic style jhoola made of the same blue wood as the gazebo, it had a beautifully intricate design that looked old but well taken care of. Seth strolled over to it and carefully tried it out; he wanted to make sure he wouldnât fall straight through it during his studying. After verifying that the jhoola was up to his standards he placed his tote bag with his now useless picnic blanket down and took out his most anticipated read, âSecrets of Shadow Charmersâ, he was excited to learn more about the powers he could now hope to develop.
He read on and on about all of the cool abilities he could attain as a Shadow Charmers. He already knew about most of them, but it was nice to know how they worked and not that in theory they could work. Shade Walking, communicating with certain magical beings in their native tongue, immunity to magical fear and emotion-manipulation inherently tied to dark creatures, fire manipulation and creation, getting out of sticky situations with lock picking and sensing certain power sources. Seth can currently omit a slightly fearful aura, pick locks, shade walk, and commune with certain creatures; but he wished to gain as many as these abilities as he possibly can, he reckoned that being able to shoot fire out of his hands would be pretty awesome.
The wind had picked up despite the heavy sun blaring down on Seth. He had started to sweat from the sheer heat even though he was just sitting there, maybe reading was a physically labourious task? Seth looked around in awe of his surroundings, he had never really cared to appreciate architecture because he was usually too busy with his shenanigans, but he was truly curious on what was up with this building. It felt alive in a sense, or that something connected to it was. Seth unexpectedly spotted a raven perched up on wall of the courtyard, seemingly watching him specifically. Surely this raven couldnât be random, it had to have been sent by BuschgroĂmutter. Seth was about to call out to the bird, to test if it acknowledged his poor attempt at communication, but it flew off the wall and swooped through the archway leading into the battlement, he could see it land on the floor within sight, returning Sethâs gaze.
Seth shot up and quickly shoved all his stuff back into his bag. He didnât want to miss whatever he could be shown and this raven looked like it wanted to show him something. Seth sprinted into the building and stopped right in front of the waiting bird. The bird innocently blinked at him, making Seth second guess himself for believing that this bird was intelligent enough to lead him somewhere. The bird took off again to the left, leading Seth further into the hallway that he had previously entered through. Seth gave chase until the raven suddenly stopped Infront of a menacing looking door. It was large and was predominately made from a purple wood, a little bit of east Indian rosewood, and was framed by dark stones. The door handle was menacing as well being made off the same dark stone as the door frame. The door knocker was what tied it all together, it was a beautifully sculpted raven skull with a bewitching purple gem in the crown of its head. Seth felt the power seething through the door, whatever was in there he wanted to see it, and no one was around to convince him otherwise.
Seth pushed open the door, it creaked loudly from the obvious years of sustained stillness. Infront of him stood an office, It was clear that this room had belonged to someone powerful and in charge. There was a desk made up of dark wood and menacing framework done with animal bones. Behind the desk sat a matching throne and around the room were full bookshelves and pedestals with all sorts of weapons and books displayed. Sethâs eyes immediately darted to the thing he found most interesting in the whole room, a beautiful sword, with a long black blade, and glowing purple writing, spelling âOur Holder Awaitsâ from the top of the blade to the bottom in an obvious arcane language. The sword also had a black hilt and crossguard wrapped in black bandages. Seth Shuffled over to the sword standing inches from it, entirely encapsulated by the sheer power radiating off of it. Was this what he was feeling earlier? It was the oddest feeling he had ever experienced; he wanted the sword; the sword belonged to him.
Take the sword,
Do what you want and do what you will, from the tip to the hilt it will bend to your will,
It will switch and stay as whatever you please,
Slay or save those you try,
Only those privy to the shadows,
May cast this arm against those they deem abhorred.
Seth felt the atmosphere tighten, everything felt hyper focused on one specific thing, the sword. Without thinking Seth snatched the hilt of the enchanting sword, holding it out in front of him. The sword glowed intensely, the words engraved into the blade began to melt and then re-construct themselves into new words, spelling âSeth Sorensonâ.
Seth stood there starstruck for a few seconds, his grandparents were going to be so mad at him! It was one thing to go into what Seth presumed was a demonâs old lair and it was another thing to get an evil sword to fuse to his will! Promptly the sword transformed into a dagger, it was basically the same thing as the sword but much smaller, it even had his name still engraved on it. Seth stared down at the dagger in his hand curiously. âIt will switch and stay as whatever you pleaseâ. Who had said that earlier? He heard someone in his head recite the poem, but he didnât take any real notice to it because Seth didnât think it mattered at the time. He was too laser focused on the stupid sword! Seth looked down again but this time at the bright glowing words appearing on his right forearm. Panic suddenly began to overtake Seth, hiding his dagger was going to be hard enough, but a massive tattoo in bright purple glowing ink was going to be even harder to hide! He had no long sleeves with him and besides that if Bracken showed up, he would most definitely notice something was up with him. Hopefully that was delayed for as long as possible, at least until he found a way to cover this up or fix it! Seth looked down at his forearm again to read what was newly written right on his skin.
The tattoo read, âRaden Corporealâ In another arcane language. Like a tattoo in English wasnât suspicious enough. Seth had to find a way to hide this quick, he had lost track of time reading and if someone checked his room and he wasnât there everyone would majorly panic. Seth attempted to put the dagger into the bottom of his tote bag, to conceal it from his families' prying eyes; But unexpectedly the dagger dwindled into shadowy smoke and then transformed into what Seth presumed was a jaggedly cut tungsten ring, it wasnât smooth like most rings made from that material and wasnât reflective either. It looked as though it was made of volcano rock, but to the touch it felt like metal. The head of the ring held a purple gem suspiciously like the one on the door of the office, and if he looked deep and hard enough into the gemstone, Seth swore he could see an eye staring right back at him. This was what Seth described as a perfect way to hide the sword, not only was it readily accessible, it was also easy to miss. If someone asked him where he got it, he could just say he found it in his closet with the rest of his inherited stuff. Seth slipped the ring on to his right middle finger, he expected it to be a little loose, but it fit like a glove, almost like it was made for him.
Now all Seth had to do was figure out a way to hide his new tattoo. Not as easily hidden as his sword and he would have to improvise an actual solution once he got back to the Keep. He was surely going to ask BuschgroĂmutter all about it later tonight, maybe even his unknown companion for his adventure could inform him on his newfound weapon. Seth resolved to just keep his forearm glued to his body in hopes that no one would notice anything was wrong with him.
Seth backed away from the pedestal and took one last look around the room, checking to see if anything else piqued his interest. Nothing really popped out at Seth, so he turned around and exited the room. Before he closed the door to let the raven leave, he noticed that the bird had vanished, or maybe it had just left before Seth noticed. He closed the door and stared at the gemstone identical to the one on his ring, he decided he would come back for it another time, he had no use for it at the moment.
Seth left the battlement and walked all the sorry way back to the Keep, remaining paranoid and vigilant hoping that no one would see his forearm. On his way back he spotted Kendra, he started to feel sick to his stomach with anxiety, and he sensed something new about Kendra, or maybe a couple of new things. Kendra would almost certainly notice something was up with him! Kendra looked in his direction and waved, recharting her direction directly at him. Seth recited his lies in his head he had conjured up earlier; no way was he getting caught and ratted out by Kendra.
âHi Seth. I thought you were in your room. Whereâd you go with all that stuff youâre carrying?â Kendra asked, she didnât seem overly suspicious, but Seth wasnât going to take any chances.
âOh, I decided to sit by the border of the invisible boundaries and see if I could spot any dragons, it would have been cool to see a dragon up close without it paralyzing me and then gobbling me up.â Seth quipped; it sounded rehearsed but hopefully Kendra wouldnât notice.
âYou better not have crossed that border! You know that's practically suicide.â Kendra said irritatedly. She then glanced down at his arm, Sethâs stomach dropped, this was how he was going to get caught, Kendra would see his tattoo and then report him to Grandpa and then he would spend the rest of his life locked up in the hall of dread with Kendra coming to visit him every few years to tell him I told you so.
âWhy are you hiding your arm?â She asked as she grabbed his wrist, twisting it to see his forearm.
âWait!â Seth yelled, way too late.
âJeez Seth, I thought you had hurt yourself or something, donât act all suspicious like that next time.â Kendra stated, then she dropped his arm and walked away. Seth stood there for a minute. Could she not see the tattoo? How? it was right in front of her. Maybe it was like the invisible walls at Grunhold. That would mean he would be the only one able to see them! This was perfect, now he didnât have to act all suspicious. If anyone asked him anything he could just tell them the same old lie he told Kendra. Seth had remembered what he had sensed when Kendra walked over. What was it? One kind of felt like a demon, but not like demon fear, Seth could just tell a demon had made the connection with Kendra. It felt sort of like a vouch that Kendra received from a demon, but he wasnât sure. He also felt Kendraâs light and connection to the Fairy Queen, it was so obvious that Seth was perplexed on how he hadnât noticed it earlier, it must have something to do with his new tattoo and sword. Seth thought more about it as he walked the short distance back to Blackwell Keep.
Seth scuttled into his room, threw his tote bag under his bed, and then flopped backwards onto his king-sized bed. He was mentally exhausted, and he knew he was going to have a long night ahead of him. Seth got fully dressed into his T-shirt and shorts he had been sleeping in the past few days, got in bed, and fell asleep to the chirping of birds outside his bedroom window.
Seth woke up to the sound of Kendraâs annoying voice yelling at him to wake up, he was having a really cool dream too about riding an awesome dragon.
âSeth get up, dinner is ready and we wouldnât want you to go to bed starving, though it seems youâve already slept a while today.â Kendra announced, then she slammed the door so hard Seth thought it would fly off the hinges.
Seth slowly peeled himself from his bed and then dragged himself downstairs, he was too lazy to get re-dressed just for dinner, so he decided to just deal with the embarrassment of his current attire. It was odd what Seth had now started to care about since he got a bit older, eleven-year-old Seth wouldnât have cared a single bit about what he was wearing, as long as it was good for adventuring. Now Seth thought more about how others perceived him and how he dressed. Especially since many of the people he saw regularly were people who technically worked for him. He still didnât care as much as most people. He regularly made a fool of himself just to embarrass Kendra by proxy; he still felt a sting when he said something stupid and no one laughed though, he couldnât just brush it off like he used to.
Seth got down to the dining hall, and realized it was dead silent, like you could hear the hot foods sizzling type of quiet. Apparently, the meeting from the morning had completely drained everyone's social batteries. The spread of food was quite impressive to say the least, there were mash potatoes, roast potatoes, gravy, lamb, steamed vegetables, stuffing, and any dessert Seth could have dreamed of. The Brownies must have been hard at work all day; the normally sized staff surely couldnât have made something this impressive. Seth sat down and hardly bothered to care about the deafening silence surrounding him, he didnât want to talk to anyone about anything because he was afraid he was going to lie himself into a corner like last time. Seth piled as much food as humanly possible onto his plate, sampling everything, but his biggest portion by far were the mashed potatoes and gravy. I mean who could resist?
In the middle of his eating, he got a glimpse of his tattoo and froze, he had totally forgotten about it earlier. What if Kendra had recently developed an eye condition and everyone else in fact could see his tattoo. Seth peered up through his hair and looked around the table. Everyone was taking sidelong glances at him, but they were never at his arm. They were directly at his face and on their faces plainly displayed was, sadness? Fear? Seth didnât care what it was he just wanted to get out of there. Seth hastily ate his first and second serving and then excused himself to go back to his room. He had so many questions for BuschgroĂmutter later, especially on what the words on his arm meant. He supposed he could ask his mysterious partner in crime as well but that might be awkward in the context of their future situation. Seth set an alarm for 10pm on his vintage alarm clock, so he could get some rest and then some answers after that, he was also excited to try out his new sword and dagger but mostly the other focus in the mission, not that he knew what it was.
Seth rose briskly from his bed, he was still a bit tired from his bizarre sleeping schedule; but he was thrilled to finally go on this long-but not really long anticipated mission. He slammed his alarm clock off because the loud buzzing sound was starting to annoy him, he jumped out of bed and grabbed his emergency satchel out of his closet and filled it with all his ânecessitiesâ for his dangerous errand. He had all the items he had previously collected from his early life endeavours, and he shoved a few bandages he had found in the closet into the satchel, as well as binoculars and a whistle. He wasnât sure what the whistle was for yet, but he found it in the closet, and he would find a way to use it one way or another.
Seth snuck out like he had many nights before and started the now dull trek all the way to BuschgroĂmutterâs lair. He had now memorized the route and since he had done it many times before, it had lost its charm.
Seth walked into the vast cave, he looked around expecting to see BuschgroĂmutter waiting for him outside her house like last time, but it looked like Seth would have to go into her house like the first time he had ever visited her. He strolled up to the large double doors, unlike last time, the doors didnât open themselves, so Seth had to push open the heavy doors to get inside. Seth could feel BuschgroĂmutterâs presence, she must had been lurking in the shadows of the house, because as soon as Seth looked back at the doors and then back in front of him again, she was standing right in front of him. She didnât put him to sleep like last time though, so that was nice.
âHello again Seth, Iâm glad you came.â She said, she had a genuine smile on her face that Seth wanted to trust but knew he couldnât.
âHey, can you tell me the plan now? Iâm still in the dark on what weâre actually doing tonight. Also, where's the person going with me?â Seth asked, he was a bit agitated that BuschgroĂmutter didnât bother to give him the specifics on where he was going and who he was going with, but he guessed in case the message got intercepted no one could read the contents of the letter. Even though only allies of the night could even see the raven in the first place, and even if they did somehow get the raven without seeing it, they still wouldnât be able to read the letter.
âTonight you will be entering Nachbildung von Schloss Lichtenstein in the sludgeholes and you will be retrieving Lowly Vatkaâs apprentice also known as her son to enter the castle with you. After liberating the castle from the clutches of the light you will retrieve one specific artifact that you must get your hands on and whatever else you would like as your reward for your help.â She explained.
âSo Nachbildung von Schloss Lichtenstein is a Castle? Also, what the hell are you talking about? Iâve never heard of this castle and Iâm a caretaker! Surely, I would have heard about it by now.â Seth questioned, he was still confused even after that vague explanation. He wanted to know more about the artifact he had to now retrieve, the tattoo and his shapeshifting weapon. That was right! Seth had completely forgotten about that on his way here. Now he wanted answers.
âTo be fair, you've only been caretakers for a few weeks at most. You probably donât even know all the protected territories off the top of your head not to mention the leaders of them.â She remarked, smiling from ear to ear. Not even trying to hide her enjoyment at his arrogance. Seth felt a bit embarrassed now
âK, I guess it would make sense that I wouldnât yet know much about the protected territories or whateverâ Seth admitted defeatedly. Seth then started to ask some questions he really wanted to know the answers to.
âDo you know what this tattoo on my arm means? I know it says Raden Corporeal, but I donât know what the context of that is.â Seth said while holding out his forearm in a way so that she could see the tattoo in its entirety. BuschgroĂmutter looked down at Sethâs tattoo, her eyes widened as she was left speechless for a few moments.
âSeth... How did you get this tattoo?â She asked, sounding so astounded that Seth thought for a moment she had been struck by lightning.
âI was in the battlement type building on the edge of the Blackwell Keep area and a sword started calling out to me. Maybe? I think it was the sword talking, anyways, when I picked it up it inscribed my name on itself and then the tattoo suddenly appeared on my arm. Not a very convenient place for something you would want to hide.â Seth recited, he was hoping BuschgroĂmutter could answer his questions about what this all meant.
âSeth, can you show me this sword youâre talking about?â She asked, sounding just as astounded as earlier but seemed a bit more focused.
âI can try.â Seth stated flatly. He was unsure if he could transform his ring back into the sword again but if she needed to see it, he was glad to attempt the task. Seth slid his ring off his finger and focused his attention on it, imagining it transforming into the same sword that he had found earlier that day. Fortunately for Seth, the ring transformed in his hand quite easily; now resting as a beautiful sword. Seth held it out for BuschgroĂmutter to grab and analyze herself.
She took the sword, looking it up and down and hyper focusing on his engraved name across the blade.
âSeth, this sword claimed you.â She exclaimed, seeming to gain some energy and wore an excited and pleased expression.
âWell, what does that mean? Do I just get to keep this sword and tattoo now? Did me and the sword swap names?â Seth inquired. Seth thought that maybe the swordâs name was Raden Corporeal, and part of claiming it was the swapping of names.
âYes and no. You may keep the sword and tattoo but thatâs not what those words represent. Raden Corporeal is now your title instead of shadow charmer, it means Physical Noble.â She clarified.
âPhysical Noble? Arenât all nobles physical? I donât get it; and how does it replace my original title?â Seth probed. Seth didnât understand what she was talking about at all.
âNo, you have it all wrong. Corporeal is in reference to how you relate to the physical world and not the spiritual or the shadow one. Raden or noble is in reference to your rank within the Underworld ruled over by the Underking. A shadow charmer is basically comparable to a Fairy Struck person, but a Raden Corporeal is on the same level as someone who is Fairykind, like your sister is. The sword speaks for the will of the Underking and chooses one who is worthy, just like how Kendra drinking the concoction and the fairies sharing their magic with her made her Fairykind.â She elaborated, finally being clear enough to get the idea across to Seth.
Seth took a moment to take it all in, he wanted to make sure he fully understood what BuschgroĂmutter said.
âSo Iâm the Underkingâs handmaiden?â
â...â
âI supposed you could put it that way, yah.â She confirmed, laughing a bit as she said so.
âSo, do I have to do something extra because of it? Do I gain new powers?â Seth excitedly asked, obviously he was more excited for the second answer then the first one, but he felt a bit of fear about if he would have to do a bunch of extra work or whatever.
âIâm not sure, Iâve never met anyone with that title. Though I do expect that youâll gain stronger versions of your current powers along with countless other new ones.â BuschgroĂmutter admitted.
âAnyways, I suppose I should tell you more about your mission youâll be leaving for swiftly. Youâll take my trusty steed all the way to the sludgeholes, where youâll pick up the Warlock otherwise known as Lowly Vatlkaâs son. Youâll both ride on the steed to the castle where youâll undo the defences of the Fairy Kingdom encasing the castle which were meant to hide away the powerful artifacts from the residents of the sludgeholes. Then youâll find and take an artifact that looks like a mini dark green planet with rings floating around it, almost like a mini green Saturn. You can take whatever other artifacts you want from the castle, then youâll both leave the castle, drop of the Warlock with Lowly Vatka, then come back to me and give me the artifact. In case youâre curious, the artifact I want can express fear of demons or at least what people would feel in the presence of a demon, itâs quite powerful. After you hand over the artifact you should go home and hide whatever you find as best as you can. Also donât forget to use your sword, it chose you for a reason.â She disclosed.
âOkay perfect, Iâve memorized what I need to do, whereâs this trusty steed you speak about?â Seth pried. Behind BuschgroĂmutter the raven from earlier popped out and stood staring at Seth with its dark eyes.
âRiven will take you where you need to go, take him and youâll see what he can do.â She said while pointing at the raven slightly behind her. Seth laughed.
âRiven the raven is going to take me to the sludgeholes and back? I donât know if thatâll work.â Seth said with a chuckle, surely BuschgroĂmutter didnât think Seth was a nipsie? He was only a few inches shorter than her, and she was a demon so that isnât even a fair comparison!
âGo outside and find outâ BuschgroĂmutter said while backing into the shadows, Seth felt her presence evaporate so he assumed the conversation was over. Guess it was up to him now. Seth looked at Riven and asked,
âDo you know the way there and back?â
Riven nodded.
âWell letâs get going then.â He said with a sigh, he felt like his journey there might take a while.
Seth walked out of the cave with Riven tailing closely behind. He paused near where to he could go back on the path because he realized Riven might not be able to use the main roads, but he had been in the bounds of Blackwell Keep so maybe he could? He looked over at where he thought Riven the raven was standing but then noticed a massive black stallion standing there instead. Seth paused in wonder and stared at the mysterious horse, where had Riven gone? Then Seth realized what should have been obvious.
âAre you Riven?â He spoke to the horse, the horse nodded and kneeled onto the ground to allow Seth to hop on his back. Seth happily obliged and attempted to balance as the large version of Riven stood up. Riven started to trot through the trees in the opposite direction of Blackwell Keep, and making sure to avoid the protected roads.
âSo I guess you canât go on the main roads.â Seth said more to himself then to his companion. Riven gave him a quick nod.
âCan you go on the protected areas of Blackwell Keep?â Riven shook his head.
âBut you can go inside the battlement on the edge of the propertyâ Riven nodded his head.
âSo the battlement is neutral territory?â Riven shook his head. Seth was confused now.
âYou can go in the battlement even though its within Blackwell Keep?â Riven nodded.
âSo as long as you stay in the battlement you get all the same protections as someone in Blackwell Keep without ever having to get admitted as a guest?â Riven nodded. Seth wished him and his friends knew about that fact when they came through Wyrmoost when they were looking for the dragon temple. Seth flinched as he thought about his friends and family that he was now betraying the interest of, though he was confident and believed what and who he was helping was right. Before Seth could think any more on the subject they popped out into a large prairie devoid of all visible life. Riven started to gallop as fast as he could and Seth had to grab on to his mane to balance himself and not fall in a painful position.
Their ride was pretty uneventful other than the occasional rustling sound, but it was never long enough to worry Seth, and he also assumed Riven could sense if something was truly off or dangerous.
After a long while of being jostled around on Rivens's back Seth saw a swamp-looking forest up ahead. There were beautiful small beads of light resembling fireflies lighting up a way being carved through the trees. The trees moved themselves to allow Seth and Riven a path into the dark forest and the trees closed behind them as they went further into the dense foliage. Seth didnât think he had ever seen anything quite like those trees, though he got the vibe that if they werenât welcome, they wouldnât be able to enter so easily. Riven slowed to a trot again as they moved along the path, noticing how the trees got thicker and taller as they went deeper. Seth started to notice treehouses surrounding the upper part of the trunks, connected by hanging bridges. The treehouses were beautifully crafted and seemed like the larger version of something fairies would live in, though they had a dark and more mystic feel to them. There were even random platforms connected as well by the bridges, though Seth couldnât see what was on them, too high up.
Behind them the forest stopped advancing and immediately after he heard the voices of something that could only be the sounds of civilization. Seth realized the trees must be some sort of spell keeping the people safe inside and anything unwanted outside. As the treehouses became more obvious and grew in numbers, Seth spotted the widest trunk of a tree heâd seen yet, and a winding staircase going up along the sides of it, connected to the largest platform of the tree village. At least Seth now knew his method of getting up, he was glad that the village seemed safe and since he was an ally of the night, he assumed that they wouldnât see him as a threat, hopefully.
Riven kneeled again and let Seth down Infront of the staircase, seeming to not want to go up himself. He nudged Seth forward with his head to signal that he needed to go up alone. Hopefully he could find Lowly Vatka and her son quickly because he had the feeling an hour or two had already gone by.
Seth crept further towards the stairs then took one last look at Riven before scaling them upwards. It took him a while to reach the large circular platform but when he did, he was out of breath, he was used to physical activity, but man was that hard. When Seth looked around at the contents of the platform, he was shocked, it looked like a nice outdoor restaurant, likely themed like a dark tavern. All the trolls, goblins, witches plus warlocks all paused and looked at him. Seth stood staring back, he had forgotten that no one here probably knew he was coming. Hopefully Vatka could vouch for him. Though he had no idea what she looked like, he just knew she was their leader. Seth spotted an old frail woman and a boy walking in his direction. After everyone glanced at their relaxed posture they all went back to talking, eating, and drinking as before.
âHello young man, I assume you are here to retrieve my son for your mission.â The old woman observed. Seth assumed this was Vatka. Seth looked over at the boy, noticing how he seemed to be similar in age to him, maybe 15 or 16?
âYes, I'm here to collect your son for the mission. Youâre Lowly Vatka right?â Seth questioned, he didnât want to assume and get it wrong, that would be embarrassing.
âYes, though you can call me Vatka if it fits, and this is my son Oberon. He is the warlock you should have been informed about.â She explained.
A silence rang out between the three, Seth was unsure of whose turn it was to speak.
âAlright, Iâll leave you two to it.â She declared as she turned around and walked away. An awkward silence fell between the two boys.
âWe should go back to my hut; I need to gather my things before we head out. Follow me.â He stammered slightly, seeming to be a bit shy. Seth assumed he wasnât fully accustomed to talking to outsiders of this village. Oberon was about the same height as Seth, standing at about 5â7. He had olive brown skin and if Seth were to guess he would say potentially indigenous to North America. He had long jet-black hair that he let fall loosely past his shoulders and seemed to frame his face nicely, he also seemed to be a bit more muscular than Seth but still lean. He wore an outfit that was almost exactly the same as Sethâs, he wore dark cargo shorts and a brown polo with black hiking boots as well, he seemed to be dressed a bit different then all the other people here.
They walked through the platform in the opposite direction of which they came; Seth took notice to the diverse members of the village. This was a place for everyone that wasnât welcome elsewhere. They reached a bridge and walked across it swiftly, Seth was enjoying the thrill he got from being so high up, he hadnât felt like this since he had to climb the pillars at Neroâs lair. Oberon and Seth started getting closer to a large group of huts in a sort of ring each facing each other but attached to their own tree, each hut also seemed to have their own deck surrounding their hut, which connected them to the other platforms via bridges and a circular platform in the middle.
âSo... you live in this ring formation? Is this basically a mini neighbourhood?â Seth asked, hoping Oberon would open up a bit, Seth could feel anxiety radiating off of him, and he didnât want it to be this awkward the whole mission.
âYah, there's a ton of these neighbourhoods all over the village, there usually relatively close to the stores and other places like that, but there are some other ones farther out as well. I like being close to the centre of everything.â He simply put. Seth wasnât surprised at the court answer, but he was surprised at the fact that Oberon wanted to be close to the centre of everything, seemed a bit out of character to Seth, but he guessed he didnât actually know him that well.
Each hut had their own bit of individuality, some had statues, some had wind chimes or other trinkets, some were even painted different colours. Seth and Oberon crossed to the centre platform connecting all the huts, and then they started towards a hut that had tons of flowers in large or hanging pots, and a rope swing connected to a thick branch hanging over the hut. There were also a bunch of fireflies circling around the roof, lighting it up beautifully in the dark atmosphere of the village during the night. The hut was made of the same dark wood as the rest of the village, which Seth assumed were from the trees the village was hanging on, and the roof was made of dark stone that glistened from the reflections of the fireflies in the sky.
They reached the door of the hut, Oberon put out his hand, and it glowed slightly red then the door swung open, Seth assumed it was some sort of magical lock. They walked in and Seth looked around at the cozily decorated hut, not what he expected a Warlock to live in at all. It was decorated with fancy red tapestry and tons of pillows on the large couch in the corner, there was also a loft where Seth assumed Oberon slept. Underneath the loft was a tall cabinet, Oberon opened the cabinet and grabbed a backpack, an army knife, and a ton of potions, Seth could recognize a lot of them from previous use but couldnât put a name to them.
âYou can make potions?â Seth questioned, he didnât know that warlocks or witches bothered to learn potions.
âYep, most of the people here know the basics but I take an interest in them. The art of potions was created by a famous witch.â He explained. Seth was glad he added extra details. Maybe they could become friends, Seth didnât really know anyone his age other than his sister but that doesnât really count.
âOh, I had no idea. The only person I know who can make potions is a regular person so I didnât really put that together.â
Oberon closed the cabinet and they started to walk out of the hut, he locked it behind them then they made their way back to the main platform, and then down the spiraling staircase. Riven was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, his horse form eating some grass from a nearby bush.
Riven kneeled again to allow Seth to hop on his back, Oberon hopped on right behind him.
âDo you know the way to the castle?â Oberon asked Riven. Riven nodded his head and then cantered farther into the forest once again, keeping an even pace to avoid smashing into any trees or causing one of his riders to fall off.
âUh. Could you run the plan over to me? I know what we have to do but I donât actually know how were going to do it.â Oberon stated shyly.
âTo be honest I donât really have a plan, I heard something about protections or like a barrier we have to break and the artifact we have to collect as well, but no directions on how to achieve that.â Seth admitted, he was hoping that Oberon had a plan.
An Awkward silence lingered for a few moments as they rode further into the forest.
âGuess weâll just have to wing it then!â Seth declared. He had a feeling that this mission was going to be extra fun.
Riven took them into an open area surrounded by trees, with hundreds of sludgeholes covering the ground.
âIs this why this territory is called the sludgeholes? Iâm surprised we didnât run into any earlier, I thought this place was like entirely sludgeholes because of the name.â Seth asked Oberon curiously.
âYes, once you enter the forest it will decide if you are a friend or foe then react accordingly. If it deems, youâre a friend itâll let you through a clean and dry path. If you are deemed a foe, itâll lead you through a bunch of sludgeholes and a dense swamp before you can find the village. Though if you ride deep enough, no matter what youâll run into sludgeholes and the swamp eventually.â Oberon voiced.
âOh, I had heard about this place from Agad, I just assumed it was some sort of wasteland.â Seth replied. He honestly had not put much thought into it, but when he did, he hadnât pictured this.
Riven dodged the sludgeholes by slowing down and taking care of where he stepped, though it took much longer than it should have, almost 20 minutes to cross the covered area! This mission had already taken two or three hours, and they hadnât even laid eyes on the castle yet, they had to pick up the pace, or he wouldnât be back by sunrise.
Luckily for Seth, they saw the large castle after a few more minutes of weaving between densely placed trees. That part of the forest was rather swampy, so it was still hard for Riven to go quickly towards their destination. Seth realized the castle was the exact same style, colour, and material as the battlement back at Blackwell Keep, and it had crumbling walls that looked like they used to be connected to another part of the castle. Maybe the battlement back at Blackwell Keep used to be connected to it, it seemed like it might fit. But how would they have transported the battlement that far? Magic maybe?
Riven stopped just outside of the large castle, letting them off to attempt to enter this âprotectedâ castle. Seth could feel the light spells seeping off the castleâs walls, warding off anything that fell to the dark side of the scale. Seth presumed that the only reason him and Oberon would be able to get inside is because they were mortal therefor, they could enter any territory they wanted but could still face the wrath of what they meet inside. Though they were unsure how to proceed, a large portcullis stood in front of them, being much too large for them to move with magic or sheer strength. Seth started scanning the walls of the castle, surely there was another way in this place!
Seth eyes wandered and then landed on a window opening at double his height. That was going to be their way inside.
âOberon, look.â Seth pointed out, he wanted Oberon to boost him up into the window so he could inside and then find a way to get Oberon inside the castleâs walls as well. They both walked up against the wall directly under the window. Oberon got down on one knee, bracing to boost Seth up and in through the window.
âAre you ready?â Oberon urged, clearly wanting to get this over with.
âYou know it.â Seth chirped, a mischievous smile spreading across his face.

3!..
Seth ran up and jumped onto Oberonâs knee, then got flung upwards close enough to grab the edge of the opening. His fingers started to slip.
âQuick, push me up higher!â Seth pleaded, he knew falling from that height would hurt, and he didnât have the time for meaningless injuries. Oberon ran over and gave Sethâs feet such a hard boost upwards that Seth somersaulted through the window and landed awkwardly in a pile on the floor.
Seth got up and gave a quick stretch, trying to soothe the aching in his back before looking for a way to get Oberon up. He looked around the hallway, trying to catch something of good use. He noticed a long and skinny tablecloth draped over a long table housing all sorts of decorations. Seth ran up to the table and ripped the tablecloth out from on top of it, all the decorations fell and clanged to the ground after Sethâs quick maneuver. He had the bright idea to pull Oberon up the wall and into the castle, hopefully he was strong enough. Seth threw one side of the tablecloth outside and held on tight to the other.
Seth felt a weight added to the tablecloth and knew it was time to start pulling. At first, he barely got Oberon off the ground before falling to the ground. He had forgotten the serious physical disadvantage of pulling someone who is heavier than you up a window, because he had clearly been in this position multiple times before. Seth needed something to connect the tablecloth to, to fully retrieve Oberon. Seth spotted a sturdy looking lamp next to the window and quickly threw it over for leverage, then he grabbed the heaviest decorations he could find to counteract the weight he was pulling. Seth sat on the ground as he used all of his might to pull Oberon up the window, putting it through the mount of the lamp, he made steady progress before he steadily grew more and more tired. Just before Oberon could reach for the window Seth had lost the majority of his strength, but he realized he had more then just his physical strength to help him. He searched himself for his power once again, then moved that power to encompass his body, he gave one last pull and flung Oberon into the building. He rolled a bit before piling in a head tangled in the tablecloth.
Oberon and Seth burst out laughing, they had realized how stupid that probably looked. After they had calmed down a bit and Seth had helped Oberon get untangled, they took in their surroundings. Seth could see yellow ghostly cords covering the floor going as far as he could either way.
âCan you see those cords as well?â Seth inquired, he hoped Oberon could see them as well so all the pressure wasnât on him.
âYep, we should follow where they lead to, theyâre probably part of the warding spell.â He articulated, him and Seth started walking down the right side of the hallway, making sure to follow the paths of the ghostly cords. They took many turns down multiple hallways before they reached a door that a few of the cords went under. Seth and Oberon hesitated before entering, they hoped there wasnât some sort of fight waiting for them behind the looming door. Seth took off his ring and transformed it into his sword, and Oberon took out his knife, they whispered a countdown of three before slamming the door wide open and taking a defensive position at the entrance. But fortunately for them no one was there, they followed the cords from out and under their feet to a pedestal the middle of the otherwise empty room.
âGuess they didnât expect anyone to make it this far.â Oberon stated flatly. He took a cord into his hand and attempted to cut it with his army knife, but it just went straight through it.
âWhat the hell, how are we meant to cut these things?â Oberon asked irritatedly, they were running out of time and needed to sort this out quickly. Seth then had a genius idea, he took the cord from Oberonâs hand and took his own blade to it, he knew this sword had some type of dark properties, hopefully it would be enough to counteract the light radiating off of the cords. Seth pushed the blade through and the cord burst into flames, completely disintegrating in his hands. Seth quickly grabbed the rest of the cords and cut through them with a single slice.
Seth felt the warding spell weaken, it was working!
âWe better go find the rest of the where the cords lead quickly, I need to get back to Blackwell Keep or else Kendra will probably find my bed empty when she goes to wake me up in the morning.â Seth said while they both bolted down the hallways. Seth suddenly stopped running, he had a realization. He sliced his sword through the cords on the floor. The majority of the cords burnt up to a crisp. Seth couldnât believe he hadnât thought of that earlier, why would he even need to find the rooms if the cords were right under his feet?
âNice thinking, I feel stupid now that I hadnât thought of that earlier.â Oberon admitted.
âThanks! Itâs fine, I didnât realize until now. Seth said as he looked down at the remaining cords, they didnât seem to break even with using his sword. They would have to find the room these ones come out of.
Seth and Oberon began jogging down the halls, following the trail of the cords. After a solid minute of their continuous jogging, they came up to some very large doors, where the cords had snaked under.
Seth and Oberon each pushed one door open and braced for a fight. Nothing happened, the room was practically pitch black and they couldnât see the cords anymore. They walked farther into the room, hoping to find a lamp or torch. Once they took four steps and were completely inside the room, the doors slammed closed and they both sat in complete darkness for a second.
âSeth?..â He heard someone whisper, he went towards the voice quietly and reached out, and touched an outreached arm.
âSeth I swear if that isnât you, Iâm going to freak out.â He heard again, Seth laughed.
âLets try to find a torch, the dark will make it hard to find the cords.â Seth said sill laughing. Oberon and Seth walked deeper into the room, desperate to find some source of light. They were holding each other tight in order to not lose the other, Seth wasnât going to admit it but he was a bit scared, being attacked by something in the dark would not be ideal. They both bumped into something, maybe a pedestal? Seth reached out on top of it and felt a button, after a moment of hesitation he pressed down on it.
The whole room lit up immediately. Seth blinked hard trying to get his eyes to adjust. Once his eyes adjusted to the blinding lights he looked around, about one metre out from the wall the floor disappeared, transforming into a frightening drop down who knows how far.
âImagine we had fallen down there while we were stumbling around in the dark? That would have been a bad way to die.â
Seth agreed, he imagined falling to his death would be super painful and not cool at all. Three pairs of hands appeared out of the abyss, reaching up and pulling themselves upwards. Once they made their way completely up and out of the hole, Seth realized they were three massive knights, maybe three metres tall? One knight had a sword; another knight had a lasso that appeared to be made out of the same material as the cords were, and the last knight held a massive scythe. The knight with the lasso flung it directly at them, obviously meaning to grab them. Seth and Oberon dodged out of the way, rolling to opposite sides. Then immediately after the scythe knight jumped directly at Seth, swinging it directly at his head, attempting to behead him! Seth fell to his back, trying to avoid becoming headless. Seth got up again and hacked the knights arm off with his sword.
Seth looked over to find how Oberon was doing and discovered that Oberon was holding up a forcefield encompassing around two metres of space, that seemed to be made of red crystal. The knight with the sword was doing his best to shatter the shield but only managed to shave a bit off every swing. Seth ran at the knight and hacked his wielding arm off with one quick strike. Seth liked how sharp his new sword was, it was clearly quite powerful, and he was thankful it was now his. Seth turned around and spotted the scythe knight halfway through his jump towards Seth. Seth felt a hand behind him pull him backwards, then the same forcefield he had seen earlier appeared around him. Because of the knight's momentum, he shaved off more than the sword knight ever had, but not enough to crack it.
âHow the hell did his arm grow back? I just cut it off!â Seth yelled. How were they meant to beat things that regrow their limbs almost immediately?
âLook over at the sword knight, his arm is growing back, guess they donât need much time to regrow. I donât think most of our spells will affect them because of their metal armour, they must not be sentient either or else they wouldnât be very good guards. I have no idea how weâll beat them before they kill us first.â Oberon sighed, clearly, he wasnât being very optimistic about the whole thing. The sword knight rejoined the other knight in attempting to demolish their only protection.
âThere has to be some way to defeat them!â Seth muttered. He had noticed that the lasso knight stayed oddly far away from them but that was probably just because he had a ranged weapon.
The crystal force field shattered, and Oberon rolled to the side to avoid the lasso coming their way. Seth was not so lucky or quick. The lasso wrapped around him, and he was flung to the side, he let go of his sword and it landed in the middle of the room somewhere. The lasso let go of him and he rolled dangerously close to the endless drop. Seth got to his feet quickly, watching all three knights to avoid whatever else came his way.
âSeth I got it!â Oberon yelled at him across the room while dodging the relentless attacks from the sword knight.
âTell me quick before you get your head chopped off and I have to figure it out myself!â Seth yelled back. The scythe knight jumped at him once again and he rolled away from the looming swing of the long weapon.
âThe reason we donât see the cords on the floor anymore is because a knight is holding them, thatâs why he's standing so far away from us!â
âHuh?â
âSeth, the lasso is the thing we need to destroy not the knights. Destroy the lasso!â Oberon yelled, he was running out of room to maneuver, Seth needed to do this fast. Seth realized he no longer had his sword, it was behind the looming knight walking to him now. He ran away, or not away, but towards the knight with the lasso. He had no sword, but he knew he didnât need it. Once he was in a close enough range, he shot his hand in the direction of the knight, and burning hot purple flames shot out of his palm. Once the flames dissipated, he realized the knight was no longer holding the cord. It must have been destroyed by the flames! All the knights stopped moving and froze, and then then crumbled to dust. Once the scythe and the sword knights were fully disintegrated, he could see five bracelets in one pile of dust, and a black lyre in the other.
âHow did you that?â Oberon asked as he jogged over to Seth.
âI donât know, I didnât know I could.â Seth mumbled, seeming to zone out. Seth snapped out of it, he needed to get give BuschgroĂmutter the artifact and then get back to the Keep as soon as he could.
âLet's get the artifacts and then get out of here, we donât need to wait around to get attacked by something new.â Seth added. They walked over to the nearest pile of dust, and saw five bracelets in it. Seth picked them up and studied them further, they were made of black, enchanted feeling rope and they had differently coloured beads weaved in between. One was green, anther was red, and the last three were orange, blue, and yellow, all the beads seemed to glow as well. Seth slipped the green one on his wrist and handed Oberon the red one, he put his on as well. Oberon walked over to the other pile of dust and Seth realized how tired he really was. Fighting for your life this early in the morning should be illegal. Seth wished he could just teleport to wear Oberon was now standing next to the artifact and pile of dust.
Seth blinked and noticed something, his surroundings had shifted slightly.
âWhat the hell! How did you get over here so fast?" Oberon shouted, standing directly next to Seth.
âIt must be the bracelets! We must be able to teleport ourselves to each other while weâre wearing the bracelets!â Seth realized out loud.
âSeth go run over there. I want to try it out!â Oberon instructed. Seth ran a few metres away from him. Feeling newly invigorated from their new discovery. Oberon suddenly appeared in front of him.
âThis is amazing.â Seth declared. He noticed Oberonâs bracelet was no longer glowing.
âWait, I want to try it again.â Oberon shouted as he was now farther away once again.
Oberon stood there for a second, not moving anywhere.
âItâs not working, maybe its a one time use?â Oberon questioned.
âLet me try something.â Seth said. He teleported over to where Oberon stood and then touched his bracelet, it began glowing again.
âTry it nowâ
Oberon appeared on the other side of him.
âYou must have some ability to recharge artifacts.â Oberon remarked. Seth remembered what BuschgroĂmutter had told him about his new title, it came with new abilities. This one must resemble Kendra's ability to recharge magical artifacts.
âYah, I just found that out myself.â
âWe better get out of here.â Oberon suggested. Seth agreed, they went back to grab the other artifact, Seth quickly touched the lyre quickly to recharge it, then allowed Oberon to put it in his backpack.
âDo you want to keep the rest of the bracelets?â Oberon asked him.
âNo, it would make more sense for you to keep it. I would need to hide it somewhere.â Seth responded.
âOkay, letâs get out of here.â
Seth transformed his sword back into a rand and put it back on his finger. Then they walked out of the castle unchallenged and dropped out of the window they had entered through. Seth wished it was a bit lower to the ground; his ankles were now a bit sore. They hopped back on Riven and rode all the way back to the tree village, they dropped of Oberon and he gave Seth the lyre back to deliver back to BuschgroĂmutter. He told Seth to visit soon, Seth said he would. They rode the way back to BuschgroĂmutterâs lair, the trees letting them through like they had before. When they made it back to her lair he quickly dropped of the artifact and greeted her and then swiftly said goodbye. Riven gave him a ride back to the boundary of Blackwell Keep. Then Riven transformed back into a Raven and flew away.
Seth tiredly walked into the building and all the way up to his room it must have been five in the morning by then. Seth then opened the door to an audience. Kendra, Stan, Ruth, Tanu, Bracken, Vanessa and Warren all stood in his room. Seth knew this couldn't be good. He could hear his heartbeat in his chest.
âCome in Seth, we need to talk.â Bracken said calmly, with his signature smile on his face that said it will all be okay. But Seth knew he had an amazing poker face.
Seth walked further into his room, his anxiety increasing with each step. He stood in the middle of the room with everyone facing towards him. He scanned everyone's face, everyone looked remorseful but also serious, like they were dealing with a threat. Kendra looked like she was about to burst into tears. Seth heard the door close behind him and swung his head around to see Agad and Camarat standing next to the door, great like this couldnât get any worse. Seth turned his head back and nervously waited for Bracken to say something again.
âSeth, we know where you were this morning, and what you did. Calvin has been following you ever since you snuck out to see that demon, and I talked to the luvian through telepathy, and he told us about where you actually hid when you guys were attacked that day.â Bracken explained, his smile had left his face, but he was still relatively calm looking. Seth stared back at him; no words could leave him mouth.
âWe brought Agad back to be reinstated as full Caretaker when the treaty allows, though since you committed treason against the Keep, he rightfully took your place as the second caretaker.â
...
âWe will bring you back to Fablehaven, youâll stay in a cell in the dungeon, and weâll do our best to find a way to remove your powers.â He explained, still remaining calm but had a hint of anger in his eyes.
âAfter that weâll decide as a collective on what we will do with you. Stan has already removed your position as a knight of the dawn.â
âSeth, please tell me this isnât true, that youâve actually been framed or blackmailed?â Kendra urged, tears started to fall down her face.â
âI knew you becoming a Shadow Charmer was bad news, I should have done something about it sooner. Now youâve been influenced by demons.â Grandpa said with sadness in his eyes. Seth had nothing to say, he wanted to say they were all wrong, and that the demons had made him do it; but he knew that wasnât true, or what he believed anyways. He took a pause; he needed to say something to Kendra.
âItâs all true, Kendra. I freed the castle, and I visited that demon multiple times, she even taught me more about my powers.â Seth explained with a sigh.
âSeth how could you do this?â Kendra shrieked as she sobbed.
âSeth I can feel something different about your powers, tell me what happened.â Bracken asked, his calm demeanor returned. He knew there was nothing he could do to get out of this, all the exits were blocked. Seth remained deathly silent, afraid that he would start weeping if he looked or said anything to Kendra again.
âWeâll talk about it later.â Bracken said as he pulled something out from behind him. Two white manacles that Seth could feel were enchanted with light spells appeared in his hands.
âGive me the artifact, and then Iâll put you in these to make sure you donât do something you regret. Then weâll leave for Fablehaven.â He explained. Walking towards Seth slowly.
âSeth please donât fight this; weâre trying to help you.â Kendra pleaded, her face was covered in tears and now Grandma was hugging and consoling her. Seth took a moment to decide what to do. He decided he was going to do the right thing. Seth looked over at Kendra.
âDonât worry Kendra, I wonât.â Seth said, smiling regretfully.
His stomach turned as he teleported away, landing in Oberonâs hut. Oberon noticed he had teleported and turned around towards him.
âOh, hey. I didnât expect you to visit so soon.â
Seth dropped to his knees and began to cry. His heart felt heavy, but he knew he had done what was necessary.

Shadow of the Evening Star CH03
Seth finds something new to pass the time while he's couped up in Blackwell Keep. He also walks into something he didn't expect, but he doesn't exactly know what he is supposed to do. What will Seth do now? And how is he going to keep hiding this from his family?
Seth loved his family, he really did; But it was getting harder to pretend he thinks the same way as they do. He didnât want to hurt them but knew something had to be done. They were oppressors of living and thinking beings and he couldnât support them anymore. He was fully committed to learning all that he can about being a Shadow Charmer but was unsure of what other steps he could take in his journey through the stars.
Seth had asked BuschgroĂmutter to teach him more in the downtime he had while waiting for the lycanthropes to get tired of the pursuit of tearing him to shreds. She really was a great teacher, in the limited time they had before he had to leave her lair, she taught him how to douse fire and emit a slightly fearful atmosphere. He had to leave quickly after that to make sure his friends and family didnât totally freak out and send a massive rescue squad or something stupid like that. He thanked her for teaching him. Then started his way back to the main road and all the boring way back to Blackwell Keep, BuschgroĂmutter had also told Seth more about how the Sphinx had been the biggest reason for the downfall of the society of the evening star, and how he did not care for the members but only for his own power and control. Seth had many more questions about all this new stuff he was learning, he wanted to read some sort of book on it, maybe BuschgroĂmutter had some journals from members of the Society of the Evening Star, like how Patton wrote his millions of journals. Seth found it odd that of all the times he'd gotten the chance now he finally wants to read. Hopefully Kendra didnât catch him in the act, she would never let it go and it wouldnât be good if she took an interest into the content of which he was consuming. Seth supposed he could give the Blackwell library a visit, though he would have to be stealthy about it and make sure Kendra or Calvin didnât see him and try to expose him for being a secret bookworm.
Seth had arrived at Blackwell Keep a bit past sunset and put the mute luvian back into their stable before mentally preparing himself to lie about his methods of survival. When the others spotted him walking inside, they ran out and Kendra gave him a big hug. Henrick was also in the group of greeters, Seth was glad they made it back okay. They questioned him on how he was and how he got here and where he went and Seth felt like the best liar in the world keeping a solid story on that he ran to the nearest safe hut and hid out there for a bit, and then headed back to Blackwell Keep when he thought the coast was clear. After everyone was done taking turns smothering him they all left to get ready for bed after their overwhelming day, they had decided to discuss what had transpired tomorrow morning to give everyone some needed downtime.
Seth went all the way back to his room to get ready for bed and then slipped out again to go down to the library to break some unwritten rules of his. The library was primarily unvisited by the new residents of the Keep, well except for Kendra running around and inhaling every little thing ever, though he assumed she avoided the things about dark creatures and their âjournalsâ. He searched around the library, examining every section and making sure he didnât miss anything that he would want to look at later. Seth had brought a sizable tote bag down to the library assuming he would gather quite a few tomes that would help him build some serious brain muscles. Alas he could not find a single one, this was odd, how could a library be biased? Surely at some point this library would have collected a book about demons or something of that sort. Seth took one final look around and noticed a passageway in a little gap between a very large bookcase and the wall, making it difficult to spot. Seth walked over to the gap and writhed his way through, having to waddle in sideways to completely fit. There was a spiral staircase going down without a clear ending from the top. Seth thought of the potential danger of an undiscovered place but then argued to himself that Blackwell Keep couldn't be dangerous anyways because of the protections in place to keep everything âbadâ out.
He started his way down the twisted stairs; he felt the excitement for some new discoveries in his heart. Maybe he would find some books about things that were actually interesting. Seth couldnât believe he was now excited to read books, but he guessed everyone finds new hobbies once and a while. Seth also found it peculiar that all the torches along the wall were lit when presumably not a lot of people visited the passageway. At the bottom of the stairs there was a medieval looking wooden door, with a very obvious lock that Seth felt very grateful for in the moment. He reached out with his power and unlocked the door. He made a mental note to relock it once he left the secret room, in case anyone comes down here regularly.
Behind the door was a large room with tons of books, it was basically the same size as the actual library above him but wasnât as well lit, giving it an ominous and intimate feel. Seth walked through all the sections, wanting to look at all of his options before he chose a single book. Once he did a full lap, he felt drawn back to the book he saw in a small section called âDemons of Wyrmoostâ which Seth could tell was written in an arcane language that only allies of the night could decipher. He dropped the book into his bag and resumed searching. He found two other books that also interested him, one titled âSecrets of Shadow Charmersâ and the other âThe History of the Society of the Evening Starâ, these two books were also written in an arcane language. Seth decided three books was enough because hiding one book from Calvin would be hard enough as it is. Plus, Seth felt swamped already by his looming caretaker duties so adding three mentally strenuous books would add to that effect and he was still unsure if he would finish them all anyways. Seth walked back to the door, making sure to close it behind himself and relock it, and then made his way up the dimly lit staircase and shimmied his way out through the gap again. Seth creeped out of the library and back all the way to his room. He was glad he got ready for bed earlier because he wanted to be comfy whilst he read. Seth hopped into bed and put his bag under the bed frame but first took out âThe History of the Society of the Evening Starâ to read. Then, he froze. He had totally forgotten about Calvin! If Calvin saw him reading something like this he would most definitely snitch on him.
âCalvin?...â Seth whispered. Nobody replied, Seth had wondered where Calvin went today. He hadnât been here in the morning and now he wasnât here at night either. Seth was relieved he didnât get caught for reading, as stupid as that sounds but now he was worried about Calvin, what if he had wondered off the property and got eaten by a dragon or something? He hoped he wasnât doing something stupid in his mission to find his true love Serena. Then out of the blue, Seth heard sharp clacking sounds against his window, like maybe small rocks or something? Seth got an idea that it might be Calvin trying to get in through the window, but he still needed to be cautious, he didnât want a Midsummerâs Eve repeat.
Seth hopped out of bed and re-hid his book under his bed, and then slowly crept toward the window. Seth peaked around to look through the glass panes to find out what was making the noise but then discovered a raven pecking its beak against the window. Seth recalled BuschgroĂmutterâs promise to send a raven when she had something new to teach him, and excitedly opened the window to let the raven in. The raven jumped onto the ledge where the glass just was and handed Seth an envelope with one of its claws. Seth hurriedly grabbed the envelope and unfurled the letter inside. Seth read it carefully and many times over, making sure not to miss a single detail. The contents inside the letter werenât much but it held a larger meaning to Seth, the letter told him to arrive at BuschgroĂmutterâs lair tomorrow around midnight, and to bring his emergency kit and whatever other possessions and weapons he desired. It also told him that there was a certain someone he had to meet and that they had a kind of mission for Seth, apparently it was nothing perilous, but he still would have to be careful.
Seth was excited for a new adventure that wouldnât have his life on the line but would still be semi-dangerous, which was what often made an adventure thrilling for Seth in the first place. The letter also addressed his fear of wanting to flake out last minute in case he didnât want to take part in the mission anymore, she wrote that it was perfectly fine if he flakes out last minutes and that she wouldnât hold it against him; But who knows what heâll decide to do, maybe heâll get to meet a new demon or a dragon, he was upset that he had to wait until the next night to go and meet this mystery person, but in the meantime he could at least read some books; Though, he found it odd that the letter was so vague on what he would actually be doing, he recited the saying curiosity killed the cat in his head to remind himself on how his stupidity had gotten people killed in the past, but to Seth this felt different then all the other dumb things he's chosen to do. Even though curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back and this foolish rebuttal was what Seth felt like Patton would say if he were him, or at least what he would say to Lena. Seth ran over to his nightstand and pulled out a pen, then wrote a response on the back of the letter saying he would show up tomorrow and that he was up for the mission, then quickly folded up the letter, resealed the envelope, and then handed it back to the raven. The raven flew off towards BuschgroĂmutterâs lair and disappeared into the dark sky. He knew this could end horribly but, in the moment, he was too excited to refuse.
Seth jumped back onto his bed and grabbed his book out from under it; he flipped open to the first paragraph and started reading without keeping track of time. He read for a few hours straight, not realizing the amount of time that's passed. Since all the content was very intriguing, he just didnât stop reading until he heard a voice call out his name.
âSeth? Why are you still up? Are you really reading right now?â A small voice said in a teasing manner. Seth tried to put his book under his bed inconspicuously, but unfortunately the person belonging to the voice already saw it. Which was presumably Calvin the Tiny Hero.
âHi Calvin, whereâd you go all day? I was wondering where you had gone.â Seth asked, trying to act as nonchalant as possible.
âI just went out to spy on the staff a bit, Bracken said they were trustworthy, but you can never be too sure. You dodged my question, why and what are you reading? It doesnât look like English to me which I thought was the only human language you spoke.â He asked, still teasingly but with a hint of suspicion creeping through.
âOh, itâs just in a Goblin language! I was reading up on all the types of Goblins and what their tendencies are and a bunch of more boring stuff, I just feel like Iâve ran out of things to do so I reluctantly resorted to reading. Donât tell Kendra or sheâll bring it up for the rest of my life.â Seth said enthusiastically. Might have been too much enthusiasm because Calvin didnât look very impressed, or maybe it was just hard to see in the dim room, Seth didnât actually know, also it might just be the paranoia again but he didnât really have anything to be paranoid for since reading a book in a different language isnât actually against any of the Knights of the Dawnâs rules, he thinks.
âOkay, you should probably go to bed soon, you donât want everyone to get mad at you tomorrow when youâre cranky from getting three hours of sleep.â He said, obviously noticing how thick Sethâs fake excitement was laid on but seemed to be too tired to care.
Seth insouciantly pushed his book back all the way under his bed since earlier he barely got it on the floor, then he proceeded to go to the bathroom a final time before getting in bed and swiftly falling asleep. Apparently, he was more tired than he felt when he was reading his book.
Seth awoke to something small jumping all over his face, it looked like some sort of mouse? Seth then remembered about the stupid milk and how the thing jumping on his face isnât a mouse but Calvin! Seth leapt out of bed and grabbed some of his emergency walrus butter from his emergency kit, then swallowed it all quickly, and blinked hard and fast to get the effect to register faster. What if it was some kind of emergency? What if his friends or family had gotten themselves into danger?
âWake up Seth, wake up, wake up, wake up.â Calvin yelled while still yawning himself, a bit hypocritical if you ask Seth.
âWhat? What happened? Is everyone okay?â Seth hurriedly asked, he was hoping that nothing had gotten into Blackwell Keep during his sleep, what a way that would ruin his morning.
âRelax everyone's fine, but the meeting about yesterday starts in fifteen minutes, and breakfast is scheduled at the same time so I was thinking you wouldnât want to miss that.â Calvin explained. He didnât sound as crazy as before, but Seth still felt a little startled by his sudden wakened state.
âK thanks, I almost had a heart attack so maybe donât wake me up like that again.â Seth said while yawning and rubbing his eyes, he wanted to go back to bed but he didnât want everyone to get mad at him for missing an âimportantâ meeting, but Seth bet that they were just going to relay that Dragonwatchâs and its allies position in the war is even worse than before.
âYah sorry I tried to wake you up in a gentler manner, but you seemed to be in a very deep sleep. Iâm going down to the dining room now to get some food, takes me longer to get there and I need a head start on the people whose pinkies are the size of my head, they eat all the food before I an even reach the table.â Calvin remarked while running as fast as he can out of the room through a tiny person shaped hole in the bottom of Sethâs door, Seth presumed Calvin made that for easier access and exiting.
Seth got up and got fully ready for the day; he had learned the hard way that showing up to breakfast in pyjamas with his try-hard family was embarrassing. But Seth thought it would probably be better if he got fully dressed anyways, what if Celebrant came for an unscheduled consultation and he made an appearance while looking like he just rolled out of bed? Seth was almost fully dressed but had somehow forgotten where he placed his socks and started looking all over the place for them. Eventually he checked under his bed and noticed his tote bag with all his books werenât under the bed fully anymore and were peeking out slightly, not how Seth remembered leaving them at all. Seth felt his whole stomach drop to what felt like was his ankles, had Calvin looked through his things in the night? Surely not. But what if he had? Seth didnât want to think about that right now, he was tired as is and didnât want to worry about extra stuff at the moment, he pushed his thoughts to the back of his mind and started looking for his socks all over again. After a minute of searching, he found his socks and dawned them quickly. Seth closed his eyes and took a deep breath, doing his best to ground himself before leaving his room.
Seth ran throughout the Keep finding his way into the large dining hall which was already full of everyone else who was staying at the keep (not a lot of people anyways) and the table was covered in beautifully crafted foods made by the staff. His family and friends were seated at the long table all facing towards each other and seemed to be deep in conversation, almost whispering their statements, whatever they were talking about it did not look overly pleasant. When they noticed him, they seemed to stop talking for a second and start a new conversation slightly louder than before, almost like they were hiding something from him. Seth could see Calvin attempting to flip a Sunnyside up egg on to his plate with a spatula, and was quite painfully failing. Seth sauntered over to him and helped him in his quest of transferring eggs onto his plate that were much larger than him.
Seth took a seat after Calvin had begun digging into his eggs. Seth loaded up his plate with hashbrowns, bacon, eggs, and buttered toast to finally have a nice and fulfilling meal for the first time in a while. Seth hadnât gotten the chance in the past few days to eat something both good for the body and good for the soul, he had been eating small strictly nutritious foods the past few days like granola or smoked meat of some sort. Seth didnât realize the âmeetingâ had started until Kendra nudged him for him to answer a question that grandpa had posed him.
âDid you sleep well Seth? You had a rough time yesterday.â Grandpa lazily said, gazing down into his plate while he spoke.
âYah, kind of a crazy day, I canât believe someone would really try to kill us like that.â Seth responded, his heart rate started to subtly increase as he gathered the general direction this conversation was going.
âLucky and unlucky day for you. How did you get away to safety again?â Grandpa questioned. Seconds before the daunting question had been asked, everyone seemed to be all wrapped up in their own mini conversations, but now everyone seemed to be looking straight at him again.
âOh um, I crashed for a bit inside a roadhouse.â Seth lied, but he thought to himself that he technically wasnât lying. BuschgroĂmutterâs lair was kind of like a roadhouse because it kept him safe, but that had more to do with what and who he was and not where he was.
âI thought you said you stayed in a safe hut?â Tanu interjected, a hint of suspicion seeping through his inquiry. Though, that could just be Seth being paranoid.
âI mean theyâre practically the same thing! I was just so tired yesterday that I must have misspoke.â Seth reassured. He knew he was walking on a fine line, and if someone discovered he was lying it wouldnât look good, especially since he had no reason to lie. Itâs not like he was going to get in trouble for staying safe. Unless the means of which he gained his safety werenât conventional in their âprofessionalâ opinions.
âI suppose it would be good if you got some extra rest. Kendra and Seth, you may head back to your rooms when you finish your meal. You are not currently needed for this meeting, and it would probably be best if you were well rested for your caretaker duties thatâll most definitely come up sooner rather than later.â Grandpa concluded. Seth appreciated the leadership Grandpa showed, but he wanted Grandpa to know that he wasnât the boss anymore and that he was an advisor for Kendra and Seth. Though, Seth thought it was alright to miss the meeting as long as he's not the only one missing out like it normally was. The meeting would surely drag out for a while and would be either depressing or boring which were both horrible outcomes for Seth. Another benefit was that Seth wouldnât have to lie his ass off to make sure he didnât look suspicious, which he was sure he already did.
Seth quickly finished his meal and then speed walked all the way back to his room after exchanging goodbyes with his family and friends. Seth was going to spend the rest of the day reading his new books he discovered in the library, he knew this was a perfect time since Calivn would be too busy spying on the staff to watch him and he presumed everyone else would leave him alone to allow him to finally rest.
When he first became one of the Caretakers of Wyrmoost he got a tour of the Keep and all the extended areas from one of the staff members they had at hand. He remembered that their guide mentioned a courtyard inside a building on the edge of the property, he had only seen the trees confining it and not the actual building or the supposed courtyard. It was fairly hidden from everyone else but was still within the safety of the invisible shield thing keeping the dragons out.
He put on a pair of proper adventure boots and started searching through his walk-in closet. There was still plenty of items left over from the previous occupant of this room. He found a picnic blanket that he could use that was both durable and not horribly ugly, it was black and had grey polka dots across it. Seth ran to grab his tote bag with all of his mischievous books, then shoved the blanket straight into the bag, it barely fit and was still half outside the bag but it didnât really matter to Seth anyways. Seth just wished he had more cool looking outfits, he's worn the same type of clothing since he found out about Fablehaven, he had only been shopping twice since he had moved to Fablehaven and Wyrmoost and the boring, and childish clothes didnât really fit his style anymore. Obviously, he wasnât a fashionista, but he still knew he didnât dress overwhelmingly well, not like he could if he had the clothes to at least.
Seth snapped out of his thoughts and decided to start his way down to the mini forest and building that he hadnât investigated yet, Seth hoped it was actually nice and wasnât completely destroyed. Maybe the place had a staff of skeleton crew like the roadhouses do. He made his way out of the Keep and walked to the farthest corner of the property where he knew the hidden building with the courtyard was located. Seth had never been inside the building, but he hopes his tour guide was correct on what was inside or else this was just going to be a major waste of time, and then he would have to think of a new secret place he could read that Calvin wouldnât accidently wonder into like he had in his room, which was now off limits for his secret reading time. Seth finally reached the edge of the property and laid eyes on the densely placed abnormally tall pine trees surrounding the suspicious building, making it so you wouldnât suspect anything was there unless you knew about it before. When Seth walked along the path leading up to the steps of the large arched doorway, he finally saw it in its entirety. It was made of the same dark stones as the Keep and looked like a drum tower that was disconnected from a castle. It could also be mistaken for some sort of battlement since Seth didnât actually know the difference between the two. Something about it was inviting, it felt familiar and safe inside the tower, like it was pulling him in. Seth marched into the tower and finally realized what he was actually feeling. But something that Seth did not seem to notice was the Raven perched up in the branches of the looming trees, watching as he walked into something more then he originally presumed.
Fairest Charmer of Them All CH02
Seth, Kendra, and Henrick's adventure takes a bad turn and Seth ends up all alone in the Wyrmoost wilderness. What will he do? Where will he go? What new information will give him the push in the "right" direction?
Seth eyes fluttered open as the baring sun started to bleed through his medieval style window; he was surprised no one came to wake him up because usually there was something they needed to do or talk about that was urgent. Seth then remembered the events of last night, Sethâs stomach dropped as he concluded that everyone else knew what he did and had decided to let him sleep in before he was put in the quiet box or hall of dread to wither away. Maybe theyâll put him in the Well with all the undead. It then dawned on Seth that they had planned an excursion to the Fair Folk later in the day which is why they didnât wake him up early this time. The sick feeling in his stomach subsided; Seth wondered if he would have this level of paranoia for as long as he planned to do this. He sat there for a few more moments thinking about how stupid of a conclusion that was to jump to. He then opted to get up and get ready for the long day he had ahead of him.
Seth found a sage green shirt to wear that repped his elementary school days lacrosse team, as well as some khaki shorts and adventurer boots to complete the outfit. Next, he grabbed his emergency kit which was now a satchel and called out for Calvin and told him he was going to find the Kendra and the others. Calvin didnât respond so Seth thought that he probably left before he had the chance to wake up. Seth left his room and walked all the way down to the courtyard where he saw everyone standing together. Seth was glad they were doing something as caretakers for once since the incident two weeks ago when Celebrant forced them to be inaugurated immediately without the approval of the Fair Folk. Kendra, Stan, Ruth, Tanu, and Mendigo seemed to be deep in conversation. Seth pranced over and yelled a greeting at them.
âHey guys, why didnât any of you wake me up?â Seth questioned, he was honestly curious why everyone else seemed to wake up earlier then he did especially since Tanu is a natural heavy sleeper and needs to be manually woken up if he is needed before 1pm.
âWe just wanted to let you rest; youâve seemed to be extra stressed out and quiet these past couple weeks; but it seems like the extra sleep helped, youâre acting extra energetic this morning! âTanu replied easily, clearly still half asleep.
âYah, I guess the extra sleep did help.â Seth said almost to himself, he knew the real reason he felt so much better, but he couldnât tell any of them because obviously they donât trust him with anything, also the last time Seth befriended a demon he got burned and almost aided Graulus in destroying the world; but would the demons have really destroyed the world? Seth found himself zoning out and thinking about what could have been.
âWe decided as a group that it would be best if we just sent you Kendra and Henrick to visit the Fair Folk because we already waned their patience with you guys becoming caretakers before receiving their approval, even if it's just tradition.â Grandpa said. Seth picked up on the fact that they also made the decision to just send three of them without waiting for him, even though he would have agreed anyways, he still would have liked a say in the matter.
After a few minutes of idle conversation Henrick showed up and the three of them talked about their transportation to Terrabelle and what they were going to discuss with Lord Dalgorel. After deciding all that needs to be said and done, they sauntered over to the stables to recruit a few mute luvians. They saddled them up and made their way over across a protected road to the territory of Terrabelle. Once inside the bounds of Terrabelle they discovered tons of the Fair Folk standing around on balconies and on sidewalks to greet them during their arrival. The son of Lord Dalgorel, Garreth, came out to escort them inside the beautiful castle, Kendra seemed to be quite enamoured by him. Seth, Kendra, Henrick and Garreth made their way fully into the castle and into the throne room to meet Lord Dalgorel. Lord Dalgorel expressed his discrepancies for the âpersonal attackâ against him and then Kendra apologized and brought other worries up to the table, Lord Dalgorel answered back and this kind of conversation went on and on for what felt like an eternity to Seth, finally the tedious discussion finished and the parts Seth picked out from the conversation was that they would not receive any type of help from the Fair Folk and that they were allowed to go converse with the Somber Knight. The King of The Fair Folk didnât seem like a lot of fun but whatever. Kendra and Henrick decided they should go get Tanu for assistance first before visiting the Somber Knight in case they canât go back to Blackwell Keep right away after the interaction.
Garreth flirted with Kendra all the way back to the main road right up until he had to head back to the castle. The ride back was beginning to feel mundane; it was past midday now, but the heat was still uncommonly high. Seth saw some goblins and trolls standing off to the side of the road because they canât walk on the road without permission from the caretakers, they were holding a bunch of weapons like butcher knives and petite crossbows.
âI wonder what those goblins are doing, itâs not like they can get near us. Maybe itâs just some lame scare tactic.â Seth joked, he had been weirdly quiet since they had left Blackwell Keep so he tried to act like his normal self.
âWhat goblins? I donât sense or see any.â Henrick declared, he sounded confident but not as much as usual. Seth was confused, this reminded him of the time a goblin was hiding in the corner of his hotel room and no one else could see it, but what purpose does invisibility serve if they canât harm them? Loud crashing sounds rang out from behind them; Seth flung his head around to see massive boulders flying down the road towards them, leaving no room to stay on the road. Kendra and Henrick both ran to the right into the dense forest, their luvians doing their best to get away from the looming threats as fast as possible.
Seth veered off to the left and tried to distance himself from his pursuers. Seth took another peek back to discover that other creatures had joined the chase, Dreadwolves, Werebears, cyclops, hawkbears and other clawed and threatening creatures had made a unified effort to kill him apparently. The mute luvian did itâs best to gain ground, but his hunters worked tirelessly and started to gradually catch up. Seth didnât know what to do, he had been separated from Kendra and Henrick and they had gone the opposite direction, he couldnât make it to Blackwell keep in time at the rate that his trailers were catching up. He had to think of some sort of safe place that he could get to in time and that is also near to him, he didnât know the exact locations of the safe huts and randomly stumbling upon one would be pretty unlikely, the Fairy Queenâs shrine was too far away and the chance that she would evaporate him just for stepping on the grass near it is too high, as well as the fact Kendra told him that the Fairy Queen can sneak around in your head at her shrines and Seth would rather not be crucified for an opinion by a supposed ally. Seth honestly could not ponder up a single solution in his adrenaline powered brain. Then he had a flashback to last night, BuschgroĂmutter! He could go visit her; nothing would dare cross into her territory without referral or invitation! It was also the perfect alibi, he could just say he found a safe hut to crash in, Seth also had heard something about Roadhouses that could also be a do-able lie. Seth whispered his destination to the mute luvian, it neighed in response, Seth assumed that was him agreeing to the destination. Good thing this luvian was mute or else he might rat on him to Grandma and Grandpa.
Seth arrived at BuschgroĂmutterâs cave and hopped off the luvian and gave him directions to wait outside for Seth and that theyâll leave when the beasts had gotten bored. Seth suspected that it was some sort of organized effort put together by the dragons, but he also knew that lycanthropes were mostly unreliable and would go off target eventually. Seth pushed through the vines covering the mouth of the cave and was surprised to see BuschgroĂmutter outside of her house or his dream. She turned towards him and smiled a bit; it looked a bit more generous and caring then last time.
âHello Seth, I saw you running towards my cave quite a while ago, so I decided to come outside and greet you instead of putting you to sleep this time.â She explained, Seth had originally thought that her physical form was in some way shape or form much weaker than her mental one, so he was a little shocked to discover that she looked the exact same in the flesh.
âI appreciate the sentiment, getting knocked out is disorienting and conversations are more comfortable when you know where you are. Howâd you know I was on my way here?â Seth asked, her reference to something she wasnât there for reminded Seth of Graulus and his surveillance of Fablehaven.
âI have a seeing stone that can cover the majority of Wyrmoost. I could sense your presence nearing.â she commented. Seth gathered seeing stones must be common at Wyrmoost; Thronis the Sky Giant has one as well.
âDo you know if the dragons where the ones to organize this? Surely, they didnât decide to ambush us on their own.â Seth inquired, he hoped he wasnât right about the dragons orchestrating this attack because he might have a bigger issue leaving this cave then getting in.
âYes, I do believe they put the lycanthropes up to this, although I am not always watching the dragons through my seeing stone so I could be wrong. Donât worry about your journey home, dragons wouldnât dare get near to the boundary encasing me here, but if they get brave and venture too far, I have other ways for you to leave.â
âOkay, thanks.â
There was a silence spanning out between them. It took Seth a few moments to realise BuschgroĂmutter might be waiting for him to say something more. He supposed he could lead the conversation a few ways, maybe he could ask more questions about her, she was apparently a very powerful demon. He could also ask her to teach him additional tricks for being a Shadow Charmer. Another option was asking the same things he did last night, but was that annoying and repetitive? Seth was just so curious because he had never really had a neutral conversation with someone who disagreed with his family openly, except maybe Vanessa but she swapped sides and he didnât really think she counted. Could Seth switch sides? Did he want to? It was a lot for a 15-year-old to think about on top of being the caretaker for a dangerous dragon sanctuary. He wondered what it would be like to join the society of the evening star, maybe they would make him be a spy, what would happen if he got discovered? Would they just discard him like they did with Vanessa? Seth supposed it would have been hard for the Sphinx to have saved her and Navarog without drawing too much attention to himself. After all this heavy thinking Seth reckoned he should ask more about the Society of The Evening Star and their cause.
âSo, do you know if the Society of The Evening Star has disbanded or not? They were pretty much defeated at The Battle of Zzyzx but maybe they resurfaced again.â Seth interrogated, he didnât want to give away his need for this information in case the demon tried to use it against him.
âThe Society of The Evening Star is still a semi-active group, of course they lost a large portion of their heavy hitters and strategists at The Battle of Zzyzx, but now theyâve redirected their cause at supporting the downfall of the sanctuaries, especially the dragon ones. Theyâve always believed in freedom, even for those who others deem unworthy of it.â She expressed; she didnât look downright sad but the way she said it hinted at a bit of negative feelings seeping through.
âThey really believe all creatures deserve freedom? But what if the ones they freed kill others with their newfound freedom? Is that a good reason to lock up most of the neutral and dark beings?â
âWhat about all the light creatures who are the reason for peoples' demises? The Fairy Queen smites the majority who attempt to enter the grounds of her shrines, even if they have good intentions, fairies are cruel and tend to only help if necessary, and naiads drown people for sport. At least dark creatures are often honest about their motivations and desires, but light creatures hide behind the glory of goodness and what is right, not understanding a contradicting perspective. Most light creatures have never experienced being a mortal and how change is a large factor in life, while most dark creatures have experienced being a mortal to some degree, even dragons can experience the feelings of a human mind and why some might commit crimes, but to the kingdom of light there are no exceptions, there is only a choice to go down fighting or bare the consequences. But what of mothers who cannot feed their young, or the weak and crippled who cannot fight, or the neutral who wish to live peacefully. Why must they interrupt their life to do something just because it is right?â She interjected, clearly meaning every word with a trace of vindictiveness.
Seth had no way to respond, he had thought about these facts many times during his stay at Wyrmoost. Like how The Fairy Queen was the reason for a caretaker's death, Fablehaven could have fallen without a replacement but that doesnât matter to the perfect and pristine fairies. They are the beings of light but donât care to preserve it in any way unless it is theirs. How the naiads had also drowned many innocent people, some could have even been little children unaware of their danger. The naiads had even attempted to drown Patton if with his ruthless march to preserve the light creaturesâ lives. Seth felt confident in his new ideas and beliefs, he couldnât understand how he had ever believed a single thing anyone in the Knights of The Dawn had said before. He knew he had doubts but now the doubts had sprouted into something new, maybe he didnât want to be a part of the Knights of The Dawn anymore, maybe he didnât want to be a caretaker of Wyrmoost anymore. Maybe he wanted to become what his family had been afraid of this whole time. For the first time since learning about magical creatures, he had felt sure in his position and what was to come next, he now knew what he needed to do.
A New Journey on a Different Path CH01
Seth has started to feel conflicted as of late, ever since the dragon war started he's had this annoying voice in the back of his head spewing doubts and other things heâd rather not think about his friends and family; but just because theyâre your family does that mean theyâre always right? What if Stan and Ruth and everyone else meant the best but had accidently been causing harm? But how will he act on these thoughts? Will Seth change sides and start helping the dark creatures? How will this affect his relationship with his family, and who will be his new enemies?
Notes:
This fic will take place around the time Seth and Kendra become the caretakers of Wyrmoost, the dragon revolt at Wyrmoost is slower paced then in the actual book (first book in Dragonwatch series) and there is a few weeks in between when they became caretakers and their visit to the fair folk because they wanted to get used to their caretaker duties, also I aged up Seth to 15 going on 16 and Kendra to 17 going on 18 because their ages annoy me in the book. Anyways I hope you enjoy this! Sorry if their is any inconsistency from the books but this fic will most likely deviate from the actual series quite a bit or else there wouldn't be a point in writing it differently. Bye!
Seth has started to feel conflicted as of late, ever since the dragon war had started he's had this annoying voice spewing doubts and other things heâd rather not think about his friends and family; but just because they're your family does that mean theyâre always right? What if Stan and Ruth and everyone else meant the best but had accidentally been causing harm?
Seth stared up into the midnight sky, zoning out into the endless stars of the dark and scary night. Stars? Like The Society of the Evening Star? Why had Seth begun thinking about this again, he knew thinking about it wouldnât help but he just couldnât help himself, back at The Battle of Zzyzx he thought he knew that they were wrong, and that the demons deserved to be locked away, but now he wasnât so sure. The recent events with the dragons had caused this issue to resurface again inside his head and it was starting to take over his life; he had even begun being more reclusive and only talking when necessary, he was sort of glad Bracken wasnât there because he always had the uncanny ability to recognize what Seth was thinking (along with the telepathy but he also seems to have a good intuition) and Seth was unsure what Bracken would do if he understood that Seth had sprouted some doubts for the Knights of the Dawn.
He felt the distrust with every other type of light creature because of his status as a shadow charmer so he felt like Brackenâs reaction wouldnât be the most positive. Kendra and the rest of his family also seemed to stop talking about stuff whenever he walked into the room and it was starting to make him suspicious. Recently he's heard his family make comments about dark creatures and such which obviously werenât meant for him, but they still hit close to home, it almost felt like they considered him âone of the good onesâ which if you really think about it, feels quite backhanded. Seth has questioned it a few times to his family and they always answer with the same analogy, âDark creatures are evil because of their nature; for example, a bear doesnât attack you out of pure malice and hate towards you, it just wants to eat, which is why they must be locked away, to keep human kind safeâ. Seth thought about this repeatedly to try his best to find an angle to agree with, but he just couldn't. If everything was fair then creatures or people would just stay away from the bear and its territory instead of locking it away, but of course they canât think through the perspective of something âso different than themâ. Even Vanessa, blixes donât bite people for fun, it's just part of their nature, so why is it fair to hate them for what they naturally do? These exact reasons are why Seth canât align himself with Dragonwatch or The Knights of the Dawn, he just couldnât see eye to eye with them anymore; which is why he decided to grant a visit to a demon he heard about through the wraiths locked up in Blackwell keep (since Seth had started to feel lonely he went to visit the undead well everyone once and a while, of course without everyone else noticing). Seth knew visiting a demon as a caretaker of Wyrmoost wasnât a great idea, especially since he had to go off the safe roads to reach her, but he just needed an opinion of something or someone truly dark, and not biased towards the Knights or Dragonwatch.
Seth started his short but perilous journey to his soon to be demon friend with his emergency box and a wish for knowledge. Seth went up the skinniest and least attention catching main road branching out from Blackwell keep and trekked forward in the dark for around ten minutes and finally the sign the wraiths had informed him about made his way into his vision, it was off to the left, only a little bit off the main road, shaped like an arrow pointing farther into the forest and seemed to be a dark purple colour as well as semi-transparent, kind of like when Tanu and other people were shadows. The sign read: âBuschgroĂmutter awaits, come if you dare, all those who are not allies of the night beware.â Seth saw the words in English, but it seemed obvious that the original words were in some sort of arcane language. Seth deviated from the main road and started in the direction that the transparent sign was pointing; after a minute or two of stepping over bushes and leaves and ducking under branches he reached a thin and old dirt path leading into a cave covered lightly in vines. Seth had no time to waste because he didnât want his chances of his acquaintances catching him or noticing that he was gone to increase, so he walked straight through the vines and into the cave. Inside was an expansive cavern lighted by luminescent plants on the walls, roof, and floor of the enormous space, a majority of the stoneâs surface area was covered by exotic and dark looking plants, seeming to be a magic garden of some sorts. At the back wall of the cavern was a beautiful and expansive Moroccan style mud house. Seth cautiously made his way towards the house in a manner that felt frightened but excited for what he was about to encounter, as he neared the large double doors they started to slowly creep open, if Seth didnât know about the demon lurking within he would assume the place was haunted just like the old manor at Fablehaven. Seth slowly made his way through the doors and farther into the house, once he reached a metre or two into the house he turned around to make sure nothing was behind him, but then discovered that the two large doors had already been closed. How did that happen? Surely Seth would have noticed? As soon as he swung his head back to investigate the quiet noise Infront of him, it all went black.
Seth awoke feeling a little trance like and also a bit lighter. Once his eyes readjusted and his brain started working again, he realized he wasnât in any type of house anymore, but standing in a damp field of grass and surrounded by dense fog, the air was cold but it smelt like rain and had that freshly cut grass smell lingering. Seth then noticed a beautiful middle eastern woman, whose skin had a more unnatural purple tint to it rather than yellow or red. Her outfit was elegant and made her a diamond in the rough compared to the underwhelming but calming backdrop. Seth took a more curious look and realized her eyes were as dark and foreboding as the Dreamstone at Obsidian Waste. Then Seth remembered that this woman was a demon! Seth flinched realizing he had let his guard down for such a long time Infront of a demon. Of course, Seth would be the only guy ever to not bring a weapon to face something that was most definitely dangerous, which was not a comforting thought since he couldnât run away.
âSeth Sorenson, Iâve been waiting for you to visit.â She remarked with a side grin appearing across her striking face.
âUm... How do you know me again?â Seth questioned, obviously curious on why this random demon he didnât know about until recently knew his name and was expecting him.
âWell, who wouldnât know one of the famous young caretakers of a perilous dragon sanctuary. Also, youâve made quite a name for yourself among the dark creatures, becoming a Shadow Charmer is quite a feat alone never mind at your age.â She responded, she sounded a little sarcastic with her tone, almost like what she said is supposed to be so obvious that it would be ridiculous if he didnât know.
Seth felt a little hot faced after hearing her response, was he really that popular among demons and such? Does that make him a bad person? Whatâs the difference between being considered popular by fairies or demons? Seth was too tongue tied to really respond other than a slight nod of confused acknowledgement.
âSince you seem to have a hard time responding Iâll keep the conversation going, I havenât spoken the secret demon language to a mortal in quite some time, Itâs exciting. You can call me BuschgroĂmutter, it means Wild Woman in German folklore, I was quite a popular demon in Germany before being locked up in this overgrown bird cage, thus why I was dubbed as wild.â She replied with a kind of playfulness and a slight hint of snarkiness. She was obviously trying to get something out of him, but Seth couldnât guess what, especially since he was the one to seek her out, and not vice versa.
Seth took a moment to pause and really think about what he wanted to say, he had to make sure he didnât reveal too much. âHi, Iâm Seth, I came to talk, the wraiths in Blackwell Keep recommended you.â He replied, sounding so unsure and unconfident that it reminded him of how Gavin used to talk before he was revealed as Navarog.
BuschgroĂmutter paused she smiled slightly to herself, âIs there something specific on your mind? Or did you come here just to talk?â She joked; Seth had almost forgotten what he had really come here for.
âI suppose I came to ask what your opinion is on the Dragon War, if you think they should overthrow the preserve or not.â Seth said with prevalent uncertainty in his words and stared at his feet while he spoke.
âI guess if I was a dragon I would want to be free, especially since a lot of the dragons now residing in dragon sanctuaries were born inside of them and didnât actually take part in any of the destruction, I feel the same way about the demons in Zzyzx.â
Seth was afraid of that answer, some part of him wanted her to tell him that his opinion was wrong and that the demons and dragons deserved what they got or that of course they were too dangerous to be let loose, but of course how much could Seth really trust the opinion of a demon? The last time he trusted a demon it didnât turn out so well; though, Seth is in relations with demons, and can sympathize with their situation, does that make Seth evil? Seth stood there a bit starstruck, an awkward silence spread out through the grass and seemed to be swallowed by the fog. Seth honestly didnât really know how to continue from here, before he got to the demonâs lair, he felt plagued by dark thoughts and questions, but now he realized he just needed someone to talk to, someone to relay his thoughts to and for them not to give him weird looks like he had just recently developed schizophrenia. Silence fell across them both, for a time.
âI sense there was another reason you came to me, loneliness and bitterness has found its way into your thoughts and you wanted someone to talk to, someone to relate and converse with without judgement, who else is better but a demon? Who are we to judge?â
âYah, I guess I needed someone to not judge me for being a shadow charmer like everyone else does, they looked scared of me when they found out Graulus made me an official shadow charmer, it was like they thought I was going to let all the wraiths out from the hall of dread or something.â Seth announced, sighing like a massive weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
âI can relate to the people fearing you part, as a mortal its easier for you to forge your own path and decide what you want to do with your dark powers, not that magical creatures canât, it's just a bit harder for them.â
â...â
âYou know I could help you out, expand your abilities, teach you things that no one else will let you learn. Life has grown dull in my solitude.â She offered, sounding genuine but keeping an even tone.
Seth thought about it for a moment, it was a tempting proposition, getting mentored by a powerful demon in turn could make him powerful, but heâs already been fooled once by a demon stating he was just bored and lonely. Although Seth wasnât stupid enough to downright deny the offer altogether, he had to find a way to make a deal with the demon to make sure nothing like that happened again, like how he would make a deal with a wraith. âHow would I know that you wonât betray me or try to manipulate me into doing your biding?â
âI understand your reluctancy, if I was in your position I would be hesitant as well, but I wonât ask anything of you in return, I will mentor you for nothing but your potential to flourish, you can quit anytime you wish.â she proposed. Seth again felt conflicted, having someone who understands his powers and that also isnât afraid of them would benefit him in many ways, even if he changed his mind on the dragons and demons being more powerful would help any side he would want to be on.
âAlright, but we need to make a deal, if you screw me in any way at all, or lie, or trick me I get to kill you. Also, you will not tell anyone or anything about our deal unless I explicitly give you permission, deal?â
âDeal, Iâll teach you a thing or two right now, take a long look at this lock in my hand.â She said, an old and weathered looking lock appeared in her hand, it seemed to be enchanted and was most definitely locked.
âIâm looking.â Seth said half-heartedly. He wasnât really scared of her anymore but was being cautious about trusting her to any degree.
âAll shadow charmers have a core of their dark energy, close your eyes and search your body for your core.â
Seth was reluctant to close his eyes Infront of a demon, but if she wanted to kill him, she would and would have already. Seth closed his eyes and started to search through his head, through his arms, through his chest and ribs, and finally found his core in his heart. âI found it, right in my heart.â Seth admitted.
âPerfect, make sure to remember that your energy isnât literally in your heart your subconscious just put it there. Now, try to borrow some of that energy, channel it, and try to take hold of it mentally.â
Seth did as she said and it came quite easily to him, he felt his energy in his grasp, and it was thrilling. âOkay, now what.â
âReach out with your mind and try to feel the lock, once you feel it, use your energy to open it, it's a lot easier than it sounds.â She advised.
Seth did just that, he reached out with his mind, surprised he could feel the lock, and then used his energy to unlock it, Seth heard a clink noise which he assumed was the lock opening and opened his eyes.
âPerfect, that is all I am going to teach you for today, it would be best for you to go back to Blackwell Keep so you can get a good night's rest because you must wake up and be a good and nice caretaker tomorrow.â She teased. âI left my mark on you, donât worry it's not harmful and nobody except demons and fellow friends of the night can sense it, it will aid you with any encounters with demons or other sorts of dark creatures, my mark holds quite a large value in the society of the evening star and their allies.â She explained.
âThanks, I guess Iâll get going back then. Seth responded grudgingly, he was a bit annoyed that she did that without asking but it didnât seem to harm him and Kendra had the same thing done to her and she's fine, so it wasnât that big of a deal.
âAnd finally, when I have something new to teach you, Iâll send a raven to your bedroom window with a letter attached with the specifics, itâll be invisible to everyone who doesnât have an eye for the darkness. Donât feel pressured to listen to my summons and feel free to write back any messages you wish, I have open and curious ears.â
âUh, alrighty then. Can I go now? I donât know how to leave this place.â Seth remarked, he had almost forgotten he was transported somewhere else, or maybe she was in his dreams? Whatever, he just wanted to leave.
âOkay, bye now.â She asserted, waving a goodbye. Suddenly everything went black again and Seth woke up on the floor of the demonâs house. âHuh, guess it was a dream.â he whispered to himself. Seth got up and pushed his way through the doors, sped-walked his way out of the cave and all the way back to Blackwell Keep. He snuck back into the Keep and all the way back into his room, thankful that Mendigo or any of the other staff werenât standing guard around his room, his shade walking probably helped with the fact that none of the nocturnal staff noticed him from a distance. Once he closed his door as quietly as possible and walked farther into the room, he heard a voice speak up that sounded like a really small person.
âWhereâd you go?â The voice inquired. Seth then remembered heâd left Calvin the tiny hero back at Blackwell Keep because he felt like he couldnât be trusted with this, especially because the whole reason he was helping Seth was because he slew Graulus the demon.
âI needed some fresh air to think about my awesome new caretaker duties and responsibilities.â Seth joked, he knew acting out of character would make Calvin suspicious, so he tried to act with his normal tone and attitude.
âOkay, just making sure you didnât leave the property and poke an ogre-dragon hybrid or something.â Calvin answered. Seth knew Calvin would a hundred percent tell grandpa and the others he had left or done something stupid if he admitted to where he went, because he thought Seth didnât know what was best for him.
âAre those a thing? I might have to check them out!â Seth quipped, it honestly didnât feel like acting anymore to Seth, he felt better after solidifying his opinions and discovering his new unattended adventure for the next little bit, he felt like he had finally gotten his spark back.
Seth got into his pyjamas and then jumped straight into his lavish and large king-sized bed; he fell asleep to the exciting thoughts of this new and thrilling chapter of his magical life.
