The general in charge of storeroom changes and off-key humming.
Part 43 of Link's Thought Brambles
You can do this, Link. You can be scientific. Methodical. Especially since you have three scientists in here to help you out. Virn, Seggin, Sharoo, and Turro are at the windows and door. No one can sneak up on you and no one'll see what youâre doing. Relax, take a deep breath, and concentrate.
âAlright, Linky. Stand right there by the ladder. No, no, face the ladder because thatâs the way youâll be facing in a minute.â
âDoes that matter?â
âEVERYTHING might matter and unless you know for sure you donât change a damn thing except what youâre testing.â
Yes, maâam.
âDonât you maâam me!â
Oops.
Yes, Purah.
âBetter. Okay. Iâm watching the system resource usage levels. Everybody stay totally quiet. Iâll count thirty seconds. Link, just try to concentrate on your breathing, okay? Try not to follow a train of thought. Itâll contaminate my results.â
Crap. Iâve tried not to do that before, it didnât go so-
âI SAID TRY NOT TO.â
Mmmmm.
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âWow, Link. That was pretty smart.â
ââŚYou can supposedly tell how far away lightning is by counting like that until you hear thunder.â
âA little hand-wavy but itâll sorta work. And it worked for this. The signal level from you to the slate was pretty consistent, and thatâs probably easier for you to do than keeping your mind totally blank. Okay. Unsheathe the sword. Hold it. Same deal.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âOkay. Is your creep-out level any different?â
âNo.â
ââŚCan you give me a rating from zero to ten? Like, if you werenât anxious at all itâd be zero. And 10 is crazy irrational panic.â
Glad itâs not that... âI guess itâs about a four.â
âOkay. Now I want you to lean the sword against the ladder and let it go.â
F-! âIt doesnât want me to do that.â
âWOW-â âLink, thatâs amazing!â âAre you sure?â âHoly s@#&-â âItâs really TALKING to you?â
Wow. Wow. I felt that. I FELT it. Itâs not words. Whatâs going on? Itâs never done this before, has it? Whatâs different about today?
âLink AND everybody else, please shut up. Now I canât tell whether thereâs any difference!!! It processes everything you all say, so SHUSH! Link, do your counting thing while you lean the sword up.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
Well?
âPatience, Linky. Rate your anxiety level.â
ââŚItâs still four.â
âOkay. Take two normal strides back. Then count again. Face the same way.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âFeel any different?â
âUm. Not really.â
âNot really or not at all?â
âI mean⌠Iâd still say it was a four but- er- a little tiny bit less? But nowhere near a three?â
ââKay.â
ââŚArenât you going to tell me-â
âI ainât tellinâ you crap! When you say a little tiny bit less, be specific. Do you mean 3.5? 3.7?â
âUh. Okay, 3.9.â
âTwo more steps back. Do your thing again.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âRate your anxiety level.â
âYeah, so now itâs a little less again.â
âLink, SPECIFICS.â
â3.8.â
âAlright. Same deal. Two steps back and count.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âRate.â
âUm. I guess 3.7-ish now.â
âOkay. You have room for one more set of steps. Do it.â
One one-thousand two one-thousand three one-thousand four one-thousand five one-thousand six one-thousand seven one-thousand eight one-thousand nine one-thousand ten one-thousand eleven one-thousand twelve one-thousand thirteen one-thousand fourteen one-thousand fifteen one-thousand sixteen one-thousand seventeen one-thousand eighteen one-thousand nineteen one-thousand twenty one-thousand twenty-one one-thousand twenty-two one-thousand twenty-three one-thousand twenty-four one-thousand twenty-five one-thousand twenty-six one-thousand twenty-seven one-thousand twenty-eight one-thousand twenty-nine one-thousand thirty one-thousand.
âRate.â
âItâs getting close to three-and-a half now. Um. Maybe itâs a 3.6. Maybe a little lower?â
ââŚBut you wouldnât say 3.5?â
âNo.â
âYou got all that, Princess?â
âYes.â
âThe slate bears you out, Link. The signal processed was slightly decreasing as you stepped away from the sword. Hmm. What about you, Princess? Did you notice any difference?â
âI did not.â
âOkay. That suggests your distance from the sword changes what you get, but not what the swordâs putting out⌠Huh. Thatâs⌠not an inverse square law, is it?â
An inva-who-huh? Well, I know what a law is. And a square.
âYeah, donât worry about it too much. What I mean is it seems like the signal from the sword is focused on you like a guardianâs laser. Itâs not shining every which way like the light from a candle. Probably means itâs singled you out too, Princess.â
Have you been trying to talk to me all along, sword?
Purahâs giving me a half-grimacy look. Is she feeling sorry for me?
âWhy donât you pick it back up?â
Okay.
I thought⌠maybe Iâd be able to tell it was glad to be back in my hands, but I canât. I just feel more nervous.
Back in your sheathe, sword.
âLinkâŚâ
Yes, Princess?
âNow we know the source is in fact the sword⌠it most certainly is a warning.â
âYeah.â
âAnd⌠I would have to imagine the reason yours includes directional information is that the sword is directly bound to you.â
âI⌠guess so. Princess, we have to be so careful. If I⌠if I tip off whoever or whatever itâs warning us about, they pull back and we donât find out what it is. On the other hand, if I donât look, if I donât figure it out, they could strike before we know.â
âIt seems to me weâve already been responding logically, surrounding myself and now Mipha as well. Weâve had eyes every which way...â
âBut youâre vulnerable from the front when order one fires.â
ââŚAnd you have been vulnerable from the back. Entirely. Thatâs not acceptable. Youâre on point this time, Sir Link.â
âW- wh-â
âYouâre well aware of why. The most likely targets here are myself, Mipha⌠and you. Your back ought not be turned out from the group. No matter how extraordinary you are, an arrow to your heart can still kill you. Iâm berating myself for allowing it earlier. Indeed, and also for arguing the warning may not be true. Sir Turro, you will remain in front with Link.â
âYes, Princess.â
âMipha, if you agree, could you please remain behind me flanked by your guards?â
âOf course.â
âRobbie and Purah, you should walk side by side next, and Sir Virn shall bring up the rear.â
Sheâs given Mipha better protection than sheâs given herself. But she also knows Segginâll get really pissed off if she asks him to flank her instead.
Segginâs looking at me. He knows. Heâs no fool.
.
âLink?â
âYeah, Mipha?â
âPerhaps you could quietly relay the warning directions to us. Do you think you can speak without moving your mouth too much?â
âI mean⌠probably, but Iâll be in front, Iâd have to talk loud for you to hear me or turn around a lot.â
âOH! Oh goodnessâno, Link. Thereâs no need to. The Slate!â
âOOOH! OOOH, SNAP, Princess! YES! Hereâs the deal. I can turn on the camera feature. Pretend Iâm memorializing the day, taking pictures! But Iâll also watch Linkâs thoughts. Link, you just think where to look. And I can say it quietly without looking suspicious at all, Iâll just keep talking like I do anyways. Iâll be facing most of you. Sound good?!â
âLink? Is that alright? Purah will need to read all of your thoughts in the meantime.â
âIt makes you safer, Princess. Itâs definitely fine. Listen up, everyone. In a minute, weâll walk out that door and see the Princess to the next arm-wrestling bracket. And Purah⌠youâre not going to pretend to take pictures. Youâll actually take them. Iâll⌠tell you where to snap. Okay?â
âGot it.â
âThere are half as many people this round, so the Princessâll do two brackets this time if she wins the first.â Which she will. âWeâll get through those, then head immediately for the ballroom. And Purah⌠while weâre walking there, stay ahead of us and snap pictures. Maybe weâll get lucky and get a look at anyone who might follow us.â
âSnappity snap. Iâm ready.â
âAlright. Any objections?â Virn blinked at that. Silence, thoughâŚâIn formation, everyone.â
_____
âSmiiiiiile!â
Get a few angles, Purah. I feel it behind us, but the exact direction isnât clear. Like earlier⌠There may be more than one.
âKeeeeeeep smiling! And⌠snap! Here I go, come forward a little, thatâs a nice angle â yeah. Smile aaaaaaand⌠snap! Going left for one moreâŚ. And⌠smile! Snap!â
Can you see the faces in the crowd?
âKinda.â
The feeling gets less the further we are from them. Letâs go.
âAlright folks. Iâll fall in.â
âPlease keep me appraised, Link. The sword no longer appears to be trying to get my attention. I suspect it knows it has yours.â
âI will, Princess.â
âSo. A change for me, at least, shortly. Oh- Purah! Were you invited to the dinner?â
ââCourse I was. Iâm too indispensable not to invite.â
Weâdâve brought them in with us anyway, invitations be damned.
âDid you bring anything to wear?â
Not safe to leave them wandering around.
âWhatcha think I am, Princess, ignorant? Of course, I brought something. Even Robbie did, with a little prodding.â
And I want the chance to go over those pictures with her.
âWhere is it?â
âItâs folded up real tight.â
We should update the kingâs party. And Iâd like to talk to mom and Chee again. I hope theyâve been able to have some fun, and that mom hasnât been worrying herself sick. Thatâs not so good with a baby on board. She deserves to relax somewhere with her feet up and not have to worry about either of the children she already has.
She deserves to have her husband there, too. To rub her feet at the very least. Would be great if heâd do some of the cooking and cleaning and picking the fruit and milking the cow and what in Hyliaâs name is wrong with him? If I had a wife and she was carrying my child, I wouldnât take an assignment more than halfway across the country from her. Fort Hateno would be understandable. Manageable. He couldnât come home every day, but he could plan double-off days and get some time in. And considering how long heâd been the captain of the royal guard, he could probably take massive amounts of time off.
Two weeks ago, Iâdâve been asking myself why I couldnât be more like him.
âŚTwo weeks ago, I was an idiot.
Iâm still kind of an idiot. But Iâm smarter than I was. Maybe I can keep smartening myself up. Train my mind like I train my body. Iâm not sure how, though. Maybe Zelda can give me some pointers.
Maybe⌠maybe Iâm also being a little harsh. She probably didnât know she was pregnant before he left.
And⌠the sky help me. Purahâs reading all this right now, isnât she? Sheâs looking at the slate.
Hiii, Purah. Yeah, I see you.
âSo, Link.â
âYeah?â
âYour momâs gonna have a baby?â
âYeah.â
âYouâre gonna be an extremely big brother. Congrats!â
âHeh. Thanks.â
Kind of her, really. To pick the nice thing out.
.
The feeling. Itâs ebbed almost entirely. âItâs going away, Princess.â
âIâm glad to hear it.â
âWeâll still stick to the plan. Oh⌠that should include getting changed.â
âYes, it rather must. We may arrive a little early for Ria. Iâm afraid she rather expected us to be enjoying ourselves at the festival, not to be hurrying back here as quick as we could.â
âI hope sheâs had a good time so far.â
âWith Myrri at the helm, I imagine sheâs exhausted.â
âMaybe not. Tobe might soak up some of that energy. Big brothers can do that.â
âTobeâs not her brother.â
âOkay, cousin. He still might.â
And weâre finally over the threshold. Iâm⌠sweating. Even with the chill in the air. We were all speed-walking. I see droplets on Turroâs temples, too.
Just a few short corridors.
âWill this be like last time, Princess?â
âItâs always the same, Mipha. Starters along one wall, dancing for an hour, then the dinner service during which all guests are seated. Dancing resumes before dessert, which they array as they do starters. All told, itâs about three hours long, though some may linger quite late.â
âWe canât. The Princessâ next appointment is at eight oâclock.â Though Iâd rather not bring her back out there with whateverâs lurking.
âIndeed. And thereâs Ria.â
âGood afternoon, Princess.â
âHello, Ria. Have you enjoyed the festival so far?â
âYes, thank you. The children have had a wonderful time, though Iâm afraid Myrri got quite a lot of egg on her shoes.â
Heh. The dangers of the egg toss.
âOh- where is she?â
âShe and Tobe are back in the kitchen, Princess. Sampling the wares, most likely.â
âUndoubtedly!â
âWellâitâll take us a bit to get you into this. Thereâs a storeroom this way.â
âVery well. Sir Link, prepare to enact the plan.â
âPreparing, Princess. Okay. Just like we went over. All the women go in.â
âOh?â
âForgive us, Ria. Weâll be a little crowded. Weâve decided for safety we must stay in groups and notify the other group of our safety at all times⌠ah⌠through song.â
âOh. What song?â
.
âWe hadnât discussed it.â
âI know a few good Sheikah ditties.â
âOh. Iâm afraid we donât sing any Sheikah songs in the domain. No Hylian ones, either. I know a few thanks to Link, but Seggin and Sharoo?â
Head-shakes. This⌠does not bode well. âOkay. No Hylian or Sheikah songs. I know some Zora songs. Does anyone else?â
âI think I know a few.â
âI know one.â
âOkay⌠thatâs Turro and Virn⌠anyone else?â ⌠Crickets.
Okay. No one knows each otherâs songs. Great.
âWhat of the Ballad of the Goddess? We all know that donât we?â
âOf course, Princess!â âSure.â
âExcellent. Well. Purah, Mipha, and Sharoo?â
âWoahâlet Turro and I sweep it first.â And heâs not laughing. I guess he thinks a storeroom IS possible for someone to hide in.
Itâs still awfully small. Thereâs nothing in here big enough to hide a person except these couple chests. Anything in thereâŚ? Table linens. Yep. âAnything in yours, Turro?â
âTablecloths, maybe some napkins.â
âGood. Youâre all clear.â
Purahâs changing, too, but I guess Mipha and Sharoo are just going to sing.
âEn dashelu nobeh shundu, tje shutue kehwenu saleh. En dashelu nobeh dushu, tje shutue nobeh dezu dotshe. Keh nahbenue nofeh toh balee, Nayru farore toh din, kah neh baneh nobeh shalu, toh nobeh dezu uta ah en.â
??
âI suppose we start again?â
âI suppose so.â
âIt is a rather short song, isnât it?â
âYouâre not singing, ladies! You donât sing, we come in!â
Oh Goddess, SegginâŚ
âEee heeeheee-â âOh my-â âEn dashelooooah hehehe.â âPfff you all are such a clusterf@#$.â
âPURAH!â
âItâs true!â
âAhem. Three, two, one-â
âEn dashelu oo oo hoo hoo nobeh shundu, tje shoohoohootue ooh keh heheh wenu sahahaleh. Heh en dashelu nobeh dushu, tjePFFFT shutue nobeh dezu dotshe. AH hahahaha-â
This... is sacrilege.
âhahaha-â âKeh hee nahbenue nofeh toh balee, Nayru farore toh din-â âEeee- eeeehee-â
I mean⌠itâs not MY sacrilege.
âkah neh eheheheheh baneh nobeh shaluwuuuu huu, toh hmm! nobeh dezu uta ah ennnn. Mmmm-â
IâM not the one butchering the Ballad of the Goddess.
âMmmm hmm hmmm H-H-Hylia, p-p-preserve us!!â
But I bet Iâll end up with some of the blame.
âHHH! HHH! Lift us- f-from theeeese. Saaaansaahh! Hh hh hh-â
âLadies. Once more. If you do not sing, you force us to enter, which apparently is a problem for Hylians and Sheikah. Please reign yourselves in!â
âS-s-s-sorry, S-S-S-Seggin! Uhha! Hhhhh-â
âEn dashelu nobeh shundu,â
Good for you, Zelda. Pulling yourself together.
â-tje shutue kehwenu saleh.â
Oh, listen to that. Ria has a pretty voice, too.
âEn dashelu nobeh dushu,â
And thereâs Sharoo. Kind of⌠warbly?
âtje shutue nobeh dezu dotshe. Keh nahbenue nofeh toh balee,â
Miphaâs voice is so high sheâs having trouble singing down where the others are.
âNayru farore toh din, kah neh baneh nobeh shalu,â
Thatâs too bad. Iâve heard her sing before, and itâs this extraordinary sound
âtoh nobeh dezu uta ah en.â
like a flute.
âTime for another round, ladies. Iâll lead this time. En dashelu nobeh shundu,â
Purah has a nice voice, too, but totally different from the others.
â-tje shutue kehwenu saleh.â
Very throaty.
âEn dashelu nobeh dushu, tje shutue nobeh dezu dotshe.â
OH Mipha just jumped an octave!
âKeh nahbenue nofeh toh balee, Nayru farore toh din,â
Now sheâs in charge.
âkah neh baneh nobeh shalu,â
Oh there we go, theyâve found some kind of song-balance.
âtoh nobeh dezu uta ah en.â
Very nice ending. âWell sung that time.â
âTHAT time?â âOOohooo.â âSuch a critic.â âI thought they were all lovely.â âAhem.â
âHeheheheh. Are you done in there or do you need us to fish you out?â
âIâm not quite ready, Seggin. These formal dresses do tend to be complicated.â
âMmm, well, if youâve exhausted your supply of cohesion, might I suggest humming?â
âOh, thatâs an excellent idea, Seggin!â
âHmm, I thought so, my lady.â
Thatâs much lower-key. Good thought. Is it as safe? Damned if I know. I donât know what the hell Iâm doing. Iâm just the general in charge of storeroom changes and off-key humming.
And on that note- HAHA! The first pun ALL AFTERNOON! ⌠On that note, the crawlies are entirely gone.
âReady. Thank you, Ria.â
âYouâre welcome, Princess.â
Out they come, weâll have to go in just for Robbie-
Whfffwh. Control, Link. Control. Eyes up. Respect. Control. âThatâs⌠not your formal gown.â
âWell. I have several. This is not the usual choice, no. The sleeves are far less intimidating.â
âYeah, these ones donât hang at all.â
âIndeed not. I quite prefer them this way.â
âThen why havenât you been wearing this one?â
âThe neckline never appealed to me until recently.â
âOh.â Do I dare to hope she means it was embarrassing before, but now itâs not because she wants me to see her in it? Am I allowed to hope for that? Because I would really, really like to take just one long long look a little further down because apparently Iâm shallow and sheâs never worn anything ever that even comes close to being open that far down, not even that nightdress was like this and I really shouldnât look because thereâs a bunch of people curiously watching us including Virn who's probably already livid over the thing where I couldnât stop watching her eat on the southeast path and Iâm holding all the guys up so Iâm just going to walk through the doorway.
âSONG!â
AH!
âWe didnât pick one.â
âRight. Thanks, Seggin. Uh. You two did know some Zora songs, right?â
âYes, thanks to your father.â
âI only remember the my love is the sea one.â
âYou mean my love is AS the sea, Turro?â They sang it in the domain. But I never heard him sing itâŚ
âThatâs it. We sing while Robbie gets dressed?â
âGuess so. Ah. Three- two- one-â
âMy love is as the sea, ebbing and flowing in me
âWith the tide it rises and rises and mountains are swallowed inside
âMy love crashes through me, I have no say, I am not free
âI cannot hide, why try to, why try
âSun in the day and Moon in the night
âAll I can do is surrender and ride
âThe sweet ocean waves as they fly with the Moon
âAnd crash when the light of the Sun blazes bright
âWhen the two meet in the sky as is fated
âHelpless before them I float and I face it
âLights of my life they lift me and carry me
âHome, home
âMy love is as the sea, vast is my home and my heart
âNo divides, nothing, no nothing can tear us apart
âMy love is greater than me, thereâs no resisting, look to the stars
âI know my path to the future, onward
âOnward
âRide with the sea
âRide with the sea
âHome, home
âRide with the sea
âVast is my home and my heart
âRide with the sea
âSurrender
âRide with the sea
âSurrender
âRide with the sea.â
.
âYou know⌠I was done changing a while ago.â
It was mostly a jacket-swap, wasnât it? He couldâve told usâŚ
âYou sounded genuinely wonderful.â
Thanks, Zelda. âItâs a beautiful song. Iâm amazed my father would sing it.â
âHe likes that one.â
Virn⌠I didnât know he liked any songs. Heâd sing nursery rhymes for-
âWas that LINKâs voice?â
âChee! Heh. Yeah, Iâm in here.â
âWhy are you giving a concert in a closet?â
âWe werenât-â
âCome outta there, already, snappity snap! Youâre done, arenât you?!â
Oh⌠yeah.
Momâs smiling at me.
âI thought you must be changing in there!â
âIt was only Robbie, mom. Weâre staying in large groups.â
âWise. Harder for our group. I feel a little unprepared, myself. Iâve never been to anything like this before.â
âItâll be GREAT! We can find out about all the stuff that dad NEVER tells us and bug him about it later.â
Oh yes. That will definitely bug the absolute s@#$ out of him.
âYou look lovely, Zelda.â
âThank you, father.â
âWell. Itâs near enough to four oâclock, I think.â
âItâs three forty-seven.â
âIndeed, Purah. Ah. Youâre looking lovely, too.â
âMuch appreciated, sire. Itâs Sheikah-make.â
âI can see that.â
Looks the same as the blue fabric they all seem to wear. Just cut out as a high-necked halter-top dress, instead. It does look nice. Comfortable, too. That cloth doesnât rustle at all, itâs probably good for dancing, actually, because it wonât make annoying squeaking noises when it rubs other peopleâs clothes or against itself. Itâs a stealth-dress!
Zeldaâs dress isnât so practical, but she looks nicer. Though Iâm biased, of course.
âPff. Guess Linky sees that, too.â
!!!!!!!!!!! FFFFFF- âI was NOT looking.â
âYou were looking.â
âI was interested in the fabric-â
âSuuure-â
âI was!â
âOoooh, letâs see.â
Zelda Zelda please please please please please-
âWell, Sir Knight. Youâve gotten yourself in a little trouble.â
She- sheâs saying that with a smirk, thatâs good, thatâs good, right? She does look a little worried, though-
âWow, Link. Youâre such a closet-nerd.â
And sheâs shoving the slate in Zeldaâs face. Guess I should be glad she didnât announce what the slate was doing in front of everyone.
âIndeed.â
And her eyes got a lot softer. Praise Hylia. My Goddess- I never thought Iâd be so grateful that thing could read my mind!
âYou know how you can get yourself out of trouble, Sir Link?â
No. Well. Sort of. Maybe? I though the slate already got me out of it.
âYou can offer me your arm.â
âŚIn front of all these royal guards?
Jeralt, am I okay to-? He just eyebrow-pointed me toward her.
Merendith looks totally blank.
But sheâs made it clear she wants me to, even if some of them donât like the idea.
Hereâs my elbow, Princess.
Her cheeks are so pink. Iâm not sure anythingâs ever felt as good as her hand sliding up the crook of my elbow. Iâm tingling everywhere sheâs touching me even through all the fabric.
Itâs like this morning. Sheâs saying itâs allowed. In public. Isnât she? Making a statement.
The kingâs making one with his smile, too.
âWell, young ones. Letâs go in.â
Her other handâs on my arm now, too. Sheâs sliding a thumb back and forth just enough for me to feel it.
âLink? Youâre aware that youâre a guest this evening, not on guard duty?â
âYeah.â
âGood.â
Sheâs wondering if Iâll dance.
I was a guest after the Championsâ Ceremony, too. But I didnât dance. I just sort of stood around with Daruk near the food. Then I sat down and ate more food. Then I stood by the food again afterward. I remember disturbing one of the waitresses by shoving an entire slice of cake into my mouth at once. Daruk enjoyed that. Then he shoved a huge chunk of granite in his and we didnât see that waitress again for the rest of the night.
Zelda danced. She didnât enjoy it, though. She was polite to her partners, thatâs all.
Partners!!!
âPrincess?â
âYes, Link?â
âWhatâs the protocol?â
âFor what?â
âDancing partners?â
âTypically, you ask me to dance and I either agree or refuse.â
âI, uh, I mean other partners. Do you want me to let people cut in? Like do you dance with people for political reasons? Do you want to talk insurance with Morovo or⌠I donât know⌠crop yields in Tabantha with someone?â
âHm hmm. Youâre smarter about these things than you give yourself credit for. Iâll nod if itâs okay for someone to cut in. Alright?â
Okay.
âBut be assured, Iâd rather they didnât.â
There it goes again. The left side of my mouth turning up all by itself. I donât have control over it anymore. âIâm officially assured.â
âLink!â
âYeah, Chee?â
âYou have to dance with me, too.â
âI do?â
âOf course, you do. No one elseâll dance with me. Iâm TWELVE.â
âThere shall be a few boys here about your age, you know.â
âWill they be all snobby, Princess?â
âHmm. You wonât know if you donât speak with them.â
âI donât look all fancy like you do. I bet they wonât dance with me.â
âWell, the more fool them if they donât.â
Thank you, Mipha!
âI will gladly dance with you, Chee.â
Well⌠thatâs a little weird but yeah sometimes women just dance with each other at these things, Iâve seen that before. Especially if itâs kids.
Huh. I donât think Iâve ever seen the guys do that.
Huh.
Where do all these not-written-down-rules come from?
I shouldâve danced with Daruk just to see what would happen.
âŚExcept that wouldnât count. Mipha said they donât have anything. So theyâre neither male nor female, really, even though they say he and him and all that.
âKmph!â
âWhat is it, Link?â
âSorry- sorry, Princess. I just imagined the look on Revaliâs face if Iâd asked him to dance.â
âY- ohh! That, I think, may have ended in bloodshed!â
âYeaaah.â
_____
[Note: The song the guys sing in the closet is called, "My Love Is As The Sea" and is sung to the Zora's Domain music from BOTW up to about 3:33 seconds. I can't record it right now because there's too much noise where I am. But I just might do that at a later date.]
[Other Note: I decided the Ballad of the Goddess would be recorded by the slate in single lines sometimes (not the way poems, etc. are usually written) because they aren't singing it very cohesively and the slate can't pick up on the meter. But the guys sing "My Love Is As The Sea" more cohesively, so the slate picks up on the meter and notates it appropriately. It's really just a story device to allow me to present the words in such a way that you have a prayer of matching them up to the right place in the Zora's Domain music.]
