We’ve lost Arlene Smith.
When she was still a teenager Arlene wrote and performed ( with the Chantels) one of my favorite songs of all time. While Arlene was classically trained, this song barely leaves the church. It’s one of the most important songs in post war American popular music, clearing the path for thousands.

The Chantels were the second African-American girl group to enjoy nationwide success in the United States, preceded by the Bobbettes.
