The Dutch government will set aside 22.9 million euros in the coming years to improve safety for LGBTI people, as new research showing troubling attitudes among students has prompted concern among senior officials. A study published earlier this week found that nearly half of Dutch students believe people with a different sexual orientation are not equal, and fewer than one in three support holding Paarse Vrijdag in all schools. Paarse Vrijdag is a day when students and pupils can show solidarity with LGBTI people by wearing purple. State Secretary Judith Tielen (Education, VVD) called the findings alarming. “As long as people are still being excluded for who they are and whom they love, we must take action against it. And as long as women are not simply safe to walk the streets, there is work to be done. Everyone must be able to feel safe being themselves.”

Our artists met up with our project manager and also some members of the youth steering group to discuss and present what had taken place during their workshops. Lots of ideas were generated by the young people involved which will form workshops for the full Ofton Festival that the public can take part in.   

Throughout this phase of the project we’ve worked with over fifty young people across four different artistic disciplines in five settings! It has certainly produced lots of information and ideas to consider whilst evaluating the work.

During the feedback meeting the youth steering group began the early stages of designing what the festival may end up looking like, starting with sketches of logo ideas which will eventually be worked up digitally. We’re all very excited to see how the full festival takes shape in the future.

Theatre practitioner Ian Pringle has been delivering workshops at both Stonebroom Primary and Heath Primary Schools. Ian has been using games and play as his foundation for the workshops whilst giving pupils the opportunity to create their own characters and devise their own large scale group games.

The resulting games at this stage are to be considered for involvement in Ofton Festival. All of the pupils involved have been developing drama skills, from devising short pieces, characterisation and learning how subtlety can play a large part in delivering to an audience.
